Why is it that books by men about men are considered universal, but books by women about women aren't? "Man" isn't the automatic gender, and if men can't relate to women in fiction (or in real life, for that matter), that's a them problem.

I'm taking a moment away from my regularly scheduled fandom to comment on the conversation about Ariana Grande.
She is not healthy. This is not me body shaming, it's me acknowledging something I hope we can all see. I don't want to body shame her, I don't want to shame her at all -- her health is not her fault. It is our fault, however, if we don't make sure the girls and young women who look up to her know that this is not a standard they should ever aspire to. I'm not exaggerating when I say people will die if we don't tell them that.
But I am shaming someone: I'm shaming society's expectation of women to be as thin as possible; I'm shaming a culture that glorifies things like Ozempic, not for health, but for aesthetics (and to be clear, I am all for women having autonomy and doing what they want with their bodies, but I am not for the social norms that push them in specific directions that also happen to be the most pleasing to men); I'm shaming both the people who are using this as an excuse to make unnecessary comments on women's bodies and the people who push this important conversation away because they're uncomfortable with it.
Thinness becomes en vogue especially when the people in charge are afraid of us resisting. They want us -- physically, mentally, and otherwise -- weak. We can't use our power and fight for ourselves if we don't have the nutrients to spend energy on that.
I've never specifically liked or disliked Ariana Grande, but I sincerely hope she becomes well again, whether it's an ED or something else. And to the girls and women who see her and think it's something to strive for, please know that your beauty does not come from your weight, and your worth does not come from your beauty.
Adults should play dress up more
Mess around with the clothes in your closet, put on a fashion show at your house even if you're the model and the audience, gather a few friends and take turns being the bride-to-be at wedding dress stores, attend fancy charity events if there are any you can afford, go try on dresses at prom stores, find a second hand store or one with lots of different styles and grab anything that catches your eye even if it's because you think it's ugly. Leave your credit card behind if you're scared you'll buy too much, go back a couple days later for that one piece you can't stop thinking about. Try on different styles! Have fun! Be creative! Learn to express yourself through your clothes again! Rediscover your whimsy!

If you're interested in a Heated Rivalry fic where Shane has a lesbian best friend, may I suggest my fic Shane's (Ex) Girlfriend.
Shane's high school girlfriend Jessica (mentioned briefly in canon) shows up at his door in Montreal after being kicked out by her parents for coming out as gay. Obviously, being Shane, he invites her to stay with him. But heteronormativity intervenes, and soon his teammates assume he has a girlfriend. With no better option, he asks Jessica to pretend to be his date for a night. However, it spirals from there when the media (and then Yuna) gets involved.
Featuring: Shane having a safe space, fake dating, a brief social media interlude, the WAGs, and Ilya being angry (but not jealous, oh no, definitely not jealous) and slightly pathetic

🥂To trump not making it to his next birthday. May he choke on his McDonalds while while his sycophants look on impassively and the rest of the world cheers.
Does anybody who protests have a recommendation for a cheap camera that I could attach to my clothes or my signs? I've been getting an influx of nasty people recently and would just like to have something as a precaution. It doesn't need to be super good quality, just a mic and enough battery to record for an hour and a half if possible
I am so fucking tired of these cookie-cutter romantasies. Bring me back to the days of good writing, before booktok made everything into an algorithm contest. Bring me back to fantasy like Six of Crows and The Cruel Prince and Throne of Glass. I'm not bashing on the people who like the current stuff, you can have your tastes and every once in a while I enjoy it too, but please, I beg of you, can we get something that doesn't feel like the same damn story repackaged in slightly different wrapping paper?
A headcanon based on absolutely nothing other than "because I say so": Ilya is sex positive graysexual. Sure, he finds a lot of people aesthetically attractive and enjoys having sex with them, but he isn't actually sexually attracted to them. That's why he's so into Shane (at first anyway), willing to wait literal years, because he's so unused to feeling actual sexual attraction
You want to know what working customer service is like? So I work in this tiny little cafe, and like half the time I'm the only worker in there, and because it can get too busy for one person to make and take orders, we have a kiosk so customers don't have to wait to order.
I was working the morning shift, by myself, vibing with my music on even though it was kind of busy because I swear a whole office showed up all at once. Some of them placed their orders with me, some placed them on the kiosk, I'm making drinks and sandwiches as fast as I can. The kiosk sends text alerts when I finish an order, but none of these people must've been checking their phones, and since none of the other places on that floor were open yet I decided to just call out the orders (like vanilla latte or whatever, because only the ones on the kiosk have names attached).
So I put the order on the counter and shout out what it is. This person who's right there asks, "Is this mine?" and before I could reply they answered themselves, "Probably not, we haven't finished placing our order yet." 👀 Excuse me? 100% serious, by the way. And this happened TWICE. NO it's not your order if you HAVEN'T EVEN PLACED YOUR ORDER YET.
At some point in the Pike household the girls are playing Taylor Swift songs and that's how Ilya discovers Mastermind. He suddenly has war flashbacks, and Jackie eventually finds him staring into space with tears in his eyes.
Do we actually know the names of any of the Montreal WAGs besides Jackie, or are we making them up for fics? (And if we do know, or we technically don't but everyone's agreed on names and I've missed it, help a writer out and tell me who's who?)
The thing about me is that I grew up never hearing the f slur, so I know it's bad, logically, but I have no emotional reaction to it. Which makes it fun when, for instance, I'm protesting and someone yells "Faggot!" at me (because I just happen to be standing next to a pride flag) and I just shout back "Yeah, and?" and suddenly they're real quiet.
Help! I'm writing a Heated Rivalry fic but I don't remember why Shane stopped ghosting Ilya after those two years, and I don't have access to the show right now. Remind me? Please?
in my world Shane was good friends with his high school girlfriend Jessica NoLastName before they started dating, and in the comphet queer experience they vibed so hard with each other they were like "so I guess you're my boyfriend/girlfriend, because that's what boys and girls are Supposed To Do when they like each other". they just hang out like usual but then sometimes they try to have sex and neither of them are that into it, and they're just relieved the other one isn't that upset about the lackluster experience to examine why that is lol. and that lasts through draft day like in canon, where in this au Shane would be more tore up about breaking it off with Jessica because he thinks they can't still be friends after, because boys aren't Supposed To Be friends with their exes.
but he's joining the MLH and she's going to college in Ottawa, so they end up breaking up after all and they're both devastated because that's their best friend and it's weird now. I don't think they talk much or even at all for Shane's rookie year, and this really sucks for him because he's having these new experiences with hockey and sex and the one person he would have talked to is Jessica, who he should not want to still be friends with because no girl wants her boyfriend to still talk to his ex girlfriend, and eventually he'll get a new girlfriend, someday.
then the Metros get booted out of the playoffs, the whole rooftop confrontation at the awards in vegas, and then the summer passes, and he's just got back to Montreal from the cottage when he gets a knock on the door, and there is Jessica, holding the strap to a duffel bag with tears in her eyes saying she has no where else to go, her parents kicked her out. she's gay, Shane. they hate that she's gay more than they love her. he thinks about telling her he's been with boys too, but it's really just Rozanov and that's not going anywhere, so he hugs her and chickens out on telling her they're more alike than they thought, because he's not gay.
she's a full time art student on scholarship and doesn't have a job, of course he lets her stay with him for as long as she needs, and they fall back into their best friendship easily. and when she does get a job she transfers colleges to the university in Montreal, and she starts making noises about finding her own place, but Shane realizes he didn't like living alone. so, they just keep being roommates.
his parents and teammates are so happy for him getting a girlfriend, and he can't find a way to tell them it's not like that without explaining why. so he doesn't. but they keep trying to get Jessica to team events, and Jackie wants her in the WAGs chat, and eventually Shane invites her to dinner with them and says look, please do me a solid and pretend to be my girlfriend. and of course she's like Shane just get a girlfriend why do I have to pretend. and, well, there's really no way out but to explain that he doesn't want one, and he thinks he's gay? cue a panic attack because holy shit Jessica he can't be gay.
she calms him down and they go to the party as his friend and he takes her everywhere with him after that. do not separate a gay boy and his emotional support butch. all the Metros are like holy shit, Shane has feelings for this girl and she does NOT reciprocate. but it works in that no one tries to set him up with random girls anymore.
The first chapter of my fic based on this is out now: https://archiveofourown.org/works/84819726/chapters/223858166

Sorry if this scares the bigots, but I chose to be queer actually. I'm usually my assigned gender at birth, and it never feels truly uncomfortable or wrong, but sometimes being something else feels better. I could keep identifying as cis, but I won't. I could be happy being monogamous, but I see no reason to limit myself to loving just one person, so I've decided I'm polyamorous. Sorry if that doesn't fit the "we have no choice, this is just how we are" narrative (and I recognize it is that for a lot of people) but I have the choice and I've chosen to be more gay
