“Write for yourself. Write for the story. And write, also, for all of the people who doubt you. Write for all of those people who are not brave enough to try to do this grand and wondrous thing themselves.”
If you need some extra encouragement today, let the words of 2012 Pep Talker Kate DiCamillo remind you that you are brave, and your creative projects are worthwhile. Read the full pep talk here.
Shoutout to NaNoWriMo participant yieng for creating the beautiful image!

⚡️lightning era aesthetics/concepts⚡️
harry ⚡️: foggy mornings, acting on impulse, doodles in the margins, oversized hoodies, devastating wit, an inexplicable feeling of emptiness, counting backwards, bad posture, rare but wide grins, natural talent, peering out the window, the constant weight of grief
ron ⚡️: private reassuring smiles, fighting to do better, folding paper airplanes, handstands in the grass, children’s folklore, the first ice cream scoop of the summer, pep talks, flippant intellect, sipping coffee in the morning, heartfelt reunions, the last move in a game of chess
hermione ⚡️: completed checklists, biting your nails, cobblestone roads, obsessing over a new skill, loose hair, wavering determination after failing, platted skirts, closed-mouthed smiles, scrawled handwriting, planning out conversations in your head, the eureka moment
luna ⚡️: silver ink, soaring kites, handwritten letters, finding things hidden in plain sight, nervously braiding your hair, the ability to keep a secret, lanterns, committing important details about others to memory, impressionist paintings, not giving up hope
ginny ⚡️: watching the sunset from high ground, honey in tea, knowing your way around the house blindfolded, a series of mixtapes, the winning shot in a game, kissing friends on the cheek, rolled up jeans, jumping into cold water, exceeding someone’s expectations
neville ⚡️: talking to the forest, sheepishly smiling, lowering yourself to level eye contact, a bowl of toffees on a desk, taking a deep breath, unexpected vindication, improving with time, the combined feeling of dread and anticipation, kneeling to being knighted
Lily Evans is from Cokeworth, a town in the English midlands, so you can bet she had a real strong working class accent. That, coupled with her refusing to give up muggle slang to assimilate, means that James (posh pureblood pillock that he is) finds Lily incomprehensible for the entire first year.
OKAY YES
Lily Potter, raised in the English midlands, has an incomprehensible english accent. I had a Brummie junior school teacher and after coming from Belfast, couldn’t understand a word from her. It can be a super strong accent.
But may I also add that James Potter, unless he had a completely insulated posh childhood which ADMITTEDLY is entirely possible (Sirius Black, I’m looking in your direction),he came from the West Country. As a person who lives there, believe me when I say it is a farmer-pirate accent. Also, often incomprehensible to the point that the film Hot Fuzz ran a joke scene about it and the range of accents you get in it. For a closer parallel, James is likely to sound like film!Hagrid (which might be part of Harry’s attachment to him on some subconscious level, hello unexpected feels) and west country language is full of weird slang of it’s own. (Alright, my babber/alright, my lover/y? being a decent example in terms of a greeting)
Add in muggle vs magical terminology, how those two understood each other at all I have no idea.
As a side note, to draw in something from Pottermore, given his mother was Welsh, there is a very decent chance that on top of this, Remus Lupin has a Welsh accent so another fun addition to that mix.
What is a little whinging accent????
South London, aka posh BBC presenter voice. Petunia probably trained herself to speak that way when she moved.
AND EVEN BETTER—and I’ve spoken about this before but I’ll never get tired of it—Grimmauld Place is in Islington, which at the time Sirius was growing up would have been intensely working class. Now, if you’re like me of the opinion that Sirius Black was the kind of child to take “Don’t go outside and play with the muggle neighbours” as an invitation to do precisely the opposite, it’s very, very plausible that Sirius spoke like some utterly mind-bending love child of Joanna Lumley upper class posh and working class Islington—possibly rich twat intonation, working class London slang and vocab.
So in general it’s a miracle anyone understood anyone—especially if you share my headcanon of Scottish, potentially Glaswegian, Marlene McKinnon…

Hermione: Rose, can I ask you something?
Rose: sure!
Hermione: there was a cake in the fridge, it was a present for your uncle Harry’s birthday… I wrote a note saying"Don’t eat me!“
Rose: aaand?
Hermione: I found the cake eaten and a note:“I don’t take orders from cakes”. Now, was it you, your brother or your father?
Parents Picking Their Child’s Name: Eh, I like the way it sounds. Sure.
Writers Picking Their Character’s Names: What genre is it? How old are they? Active or passive? Blood type? Country of origin? Is it a family name? What does the name mean? Is it pretentious? Is it not pretentious enough? Can it be used as a metaphor? What position was the planet to the stars at the exact moment of their birth? Is the name gay enough?

“how is it so easy for you to be kind to people?” she asked.
“cause people have not been kind to me.”
I was reading my writing today, and let me tell you, it may not be good, plot is not the best, and characters are a bit stereotypical, but boy do I have fun writing it
This is such a good mindset to have. There is positive energy in this post
