5 Alternatives to Black Friday
Black Friday is not a necessity even if you’re broke and need the deals. You can still use that day to prove a point even if just for that moment. Here are some alternatives if you want to shop like it’s Black Friday and still make that point that Black lives matter enough to boycott this major holiday for this racist country:
1. Cyber Monday
If waiting in long lines is a slow form of torture for you, Cyber Monday can be the perfect alternative to Black Friday. Cyber Monday is quickly growing as a major holiday shopping date too – and many retailers are offering huge discounts for online shoppers, in addition to fantastic shipping deals, on this day.
2. Local Craft Fairs and Artesian Markets
If you are looking for a unique eco-friendly Christmas gift, try local craft fairs and artesian markets. Many local markets host their own special holiday events – complete with live music, tasty snacks and fun for the kids too. Shopping at one of these venues can give you a big dose of Christmas cheer – and you’ll be supporting your local community too.
3. The First Two Weeks of December
Retailers who didn’t clear out all of their wares on Black Friday often offer deep discounts the first two weeks of December. Keep in mind if you wait until this time to shop though, you will probably not score the next hottest electronic item on a super crazy sale – but you can still reap in big discounts on gifts and save a bundle on your Christmas shopping
4. After Christmas Shopping Sales
Many shoppers standing in lines on Black Friday are shopping for themselves too. If you had also planned on welcoming Kris Kringle into your home during the holiday season for a few necessities or household wish items, it may pay to wait until a few days after Christmas when stores are dealing with a glut of returns. Again, you probably won’t see the deep discounts on newer electronics and appliances which are featured on the big Christmas shopping days – but you can still save without having to wait in line and deal with crushing holiday crowds.
5. Daily Online Holiday Deals
Between the most popular Christmas shopping days are daily deals which are often posted online through major retailers. If you want to skip Black Friday and shop online, sign up for email alerts, check your favorite retailers for special holiday coupon deals and keep an eye on your favorite items to see where they are being sold, by whom and if a discount is expected any time soon.
You can still boycott Black Friday.
SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY IS THE 29th. AGAIN, NO DEEP DISCOUNTS BUT POTENTIAL GOR UNIQUE GIFTS BOUGHT FROM COMMUNITYMEMBERS!
Learn to put on your bracelets and zip up your dresses by yourself. There will be times when you will be alone. Get on a long plane ride. Look out the window. Understand the immensity of our world. Understand your insignificance. Understand your absolute importance. Press the send button. If you don’t say it now, you never will. Do not sneer at happiness or roll your eyes at sadness. Be aware that apathy is not healthy. You are more than the amount of people who want to have sex with you. That pit in your stomach when he doesn’t text you back, it shouldn’t be there. No one should be able to control you like that. Shopping is cathartic. Buy the shoes and deal with one-ply toilet paper for a while. It will get better, but it will never be perfect. Learn to live through the small moments of happiness. When they disappear, remember they will resurface. I promise that cookie will not change anything (except that it will make you smile). Please, please, take care of yourself. You are everything to somebody. You are everything to your self. That alone is enough.

"14-year-old Parkview High School Freshman, Caleb Christian was concerned about the number of incidents of police abuse in the news. Still, he knew there were many good police officers in various communities, but had no way of figuring out which communities were highly rated and which were not.
So, together with his two older sisters: Parkview High School senior Ima Christian, and Gwinnett School of Math, Science, and Technology sophomore, Asha Christian, they founded a mobile app development company– Pinetart Inc., under which they created a mobile app called Five-O.
Five-O, allows citizens to enter the details of every interaction with a police officer. It also allows them to rate that officer in terms of courtesy and professionalism and provides the ability to enter a short description of what transpired. These details are captured for every county in the United States. Citizen race and age information data is also captured.
Additionally, Five-O allows citizens to store the details of each encounter with law enforcement; this provides convenient access to critical information needed for legal action or commendation.”

10 Things Food Banks Need But Won’t Ask For
Some items are in high demand at the food bank and you may not realize it. Because they aren’t essentials, the staff doesn’t publicly ask for them. A survey asked volunteers what items people would be most appreciative of and we’ve listed the top 10 below. If you’re looking for an easy way to help out, pick some of these up while shopping and drop them off at one of our area food banks.
1. Spices.
Think about it. People who rely on the food bank eat a lot of canned food, rice, oatmeal, white bread, etc. They love spices. Seasoned salt, cayenne pepper, chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, oregano, basil and so on.
2. Feminine Menstrual Products.
Can you imagine being worried about affording these? Pads, tampons, panty liners, etc. Recommended: Buy in bulk at Costco for donating.
3. Chocolate.
People don’t need it, but think about being in their shoes and how nice it would be to be given a chocolate bar or brownie mix along with your essentials.
4. Toiletries.
Grocery stores are great about donating surplus or unsold food, but they have no reason to donate toilet paper, tooth paste, soap, deodorant, shampoo, etc. Food stamps often don’t cover these. (edit: they don’t cover them ever)
5. Canned meats and jerky.
This isn’t true of all food banks, but some struggle to give users enough protein.
6. Crackers and tortillas.
They don’t spoil and everybody likes them.
7. Baby toiletries.
Diapers, baby wipes, baby formula, baby shampoo, baby soap, baby food, bottles, etc.
8. Soup packets.
Sometimes you look at rice, beans, instant potatoes, and cans of vegetable and think, “What do I make with this?” Hearty soup is a complete meal.
9. Socks.
From a former homeless person: “Socks mean the world to you. They keep you warm, make you feel like you have something new, and just comfort you.”
10. Canned fruit other than pineapple.
Food banks get a lot of pineapple donated. Their clients love it when other kinds of fruit are available.

And remember! Food banks love cash donations because it allows them to buy whatever they need!

Incredible photo project reveals the wide diversity of Americans in uniform
Do you know what America’s veterans look like?
There are approximately 21.8 million veterans in the United States, according to the census. But it can be difficult sometimes to see the diversity of faces that make up such an imposing statistic. Here are a few things we do know: Out of 21.8 million veterans, approximately 1.3 million of them are living uninsured, according to the Urban Institute, while according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans, 60,000 veterans are currently homeless sleeping on our streets.
A new photo series called The Soldier Art Project aims to change this, capturing the humans who inhabit the uniforms in powerful and often poignant portraits.

Crystal Card of the Day: Striped Brown Jasper, “I steadily work through all challenges in my path.”
A comforting stone, Striped Brown Jasper can help with issues involving the aura and chakras. Working very slowly, Jaspers are thought to help people bring their ideas to fruition by enhancing determination. When you want to perform higher spiritual work but stay earth connected (readers, mediums, healers), this is the stone to use. Striped Brown Jasper is often recommended for bringing people down to earth and promoting mental processes, especially after meditation or rituals involving the more ethereal stones such as Moldavite or Phenakite. Carrying Brown Striped Jasper can help in relations with others throughout the day, especially in work situations.

This doesn’t even get close to 800 square feet, hope that works. Today I discovered that courtyards are hard.
