Danaë has recently become one of my favorite paintings. I am absolutely in love and I needed to share it.

Danaë’s father, Acrisius, the king of Argos, has locked Danaë in a tower to prevent her from bearing children- her first born would be fated to kill her father. Upon seeing her beauty, Zeus falls in love her and is overwhelmed by his desire for. Through a crack in the ceiling, zeus comes to her in a shower of gold, and she willingly gives herself to him. The painting is incredibly erotic, Danae’s open legs and the pleasure on her face signify sexual pleasure, but it for Danaë it’s more than sexual release, it’s transcendence.
