The Coffee Room at the Lower Dacha
The coffee room was decorated like a bedroom: low mahogany paneling, cretonne with garlands of flowers on the walls, a coffered stucco ceiling, mahogany furniture characteristic of the Art Nouveau style-tables, armchairs with elegant curved legs, built-in corner sofas with shelves - made by the Roman Melzer.
Here, whole family liked to gather in the evenings to read books or past photos in albums. The imperial family was very fond of photography, and in the Lower Dacha there were over 1,000 photographs that vividly captured various events and features of everyday life of the royal family.

“A happy day: the Lord sent us a third daughter—Maria, who was safely born at 12.10!” —Nicholas II’s diary (from A Lifelong Passion by Andrei Maylunas and Sergei Mironenko) “Tall, plump with sable brows, a bright blush on her open Russian face, she is especially appealing to a Russian heart. One looks and involuntarily imagines her dressed in a Russian Boyar sarafan; around her arms one imagines muslin sleeves, on the high breast—precious stones, and above the high white brow—a kokoshnik with exquisite pearls ... her eyes illuminate her entire face with a unique, radiant luster; they sometimes seem black, as long eyelashes throw shadows over the bright blush of her soft cheeks. She is merry and alive, but she has not yet awakened completely to life; probably concealed in her are the immense forces of a real Russian woman.” —Sofia Ofrosimova (from Maria Romanov: Third Daughter of the Last Tsar, Diaries and Letters, 1908-1918)

Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”

"We were awaiting our parents’ return, and had even thought out a little ‘tableau’ which we could enact for a welcome. Then, while we were at lunch on the Sunday, Monsignor Stanowsky, the tutor to my brothers, was called away from the table to the telephone. He came back completely shaken but said nothing, and we thought it was bad news about his mother, who was very ill at the time. He immediately rang up our aunt Henriette, my mother’s sister, in Prague, and asked her to come to Chlumetz immediately. She arrived that afternoon and told us, more or less straightaway, that there had been an attack on our parents and that they were both injured. We were shattered and begged to be allowed to go to them. Instead, we were taken to the village church in Chlumetz to pray for them. Stili we had no idea how dreadful the news really was. They let us sleep - as well as we could - overnight, and then, early the next morning, we were told the dreadful truth".
