the corners of his mouth twist downward, regret churning unpleasantly in his stomach. " i insist. my behavior was unacceptable. " and much of it brought on by a bit too much to drink, but that excuses nothing. " i am sorry. "
her icy expression softened, if just by a fraction. he looked so forlorn, and genuinely apologetic. his words would not soon flee her mind, but an apology from the indomitable viscount? surely, a victory. " perhaps, then, you might reconcile yourself by fetching me another drink? " she held out both her empty champagne flute and her elbow, both with an expectant look. whilst, for the moment, forgiving, she would not let him go unscatched so easily.
Reign (TV Series 2013–2017)
" i owe you an apology for my behavior the other night. i treated you most rudely. "
@ladymilbanke
she forced a smile, one that did not quite reach her eyes. but, she was anything but impolite. " please, viscount bridgerton. you need not apologize to me. shall we just forget it happened? " forgive, perhaps, but not forget.
Benjamin looked her way with a grin. "Oh? Well, I'm afraid I don't have the 'wealthy uncle card' to play, so I'll have to rely upon my wit and devastating charm. Even so..." He leaned against the window pane with a smirk. "I'm afraid if I were to try and pick their minds, they'd undoubtedly be far more interested in a pair of pretty eyes. Were I to flutter my own lashes, I fear it wouldn't have quite the same effect."
Hannah laughed, and the flash of disbelief in her gaze made Benjamin hunker with a hint of uncertainty. " fanny hill? " she echoed. " surely, you have not read such a scandalous novel. "
Once more, a faint pink flooded Benjamin's face and he shrugged, sheepish in his concession. "I might have," he allowed. "As a scholar, I intend to read whatever I can, because taking one's word for the book's so-called horrors would never do. In order to develop a proper opinion, I needed to experience said horrors myself...and opinions I certainly have. Though it's nothing I'd recommend for a book club. Unless, of course, the objective is to terrorize the ton's mothers."
A look of scorn crossed Hannah's face at the mention of Kant, and Benjamin could scarcely suppress his grin. "Ah. Well, I suppose it's a good thing the poor man is long since passed, because otherwise, you would've just eviscerated him right before man and God. And I, for one, happen to applaud you...though don't tell my friend, Abe. He's a steadfast admirer."
Face softening with intrigue, he absently ran his thumb over his lower lip. "A friction matchstick?" he echoed. "Judging by the name, it's part of a tinder box? Perhaps replacing the flint?"
His own tinder box weighed heavily within his pocket -- an old family heirloom, and one he rarely left behind. All resourceful men kept one on hand, but the idea of innovation never failed to intrigue. He wasn't quite like his father, who believed in simplicity and that God wouldn't approve of such progress.
To his surprise (and yes, perhaps delight), Hannah extended her arm and invited him to accompany her for a drink. Trying to bite back his smile, Benjamin looped her arm through the crook of his elbow, and then gently pressed her hand as it lay upon his forearm. "I'd be delighted," he assured her. "If I hadn't been asked to keep Gregory from diving headfirst into the desserts -- not to mention, various other mischiefs -- I would've already invited you to take a turn with me through the library. I'm always intrigued by what people choose as their initial selection."
" I am sure your wit and charm take your further in life than you imagine. " hannah hid a smile behind her fan which she opened with a simple flick of her wrist. she was fairly certain he had just commented on how pretty her eyes were, which, told her that he had noticed her brown, soulful eyes, and his mention of his alleged devastating charm signaled that he hoped hannah agreed with such a statement. and perhaps at first she would have disagreed entirely, the longer she talked to him, the more she felt incrementally swayed by such charm.
she then rolled her eyes once more at the mention of kant and his apparent shortcomings. " mr. tallmadge, if you depart our conversation tonight with anything, it should be knowledge that I am capable of eviscerating any man, living or dead. " she was, rather impressed that he had not been frightened off by her demeanor and scathing remarks. perhaps he was made of stronger stuff than she had originally judged him for.
" it's a strange little invention, but it's meant to take the place of these other dangerous methods of lighting fires. " she had read many articles describing the mechanisms of the little devices, including how the inventor had so cleverly rendered the use of phosphorus for his purposes " do you find yourself quite interested in the natural sciences and progress? I must confess I am far more curious about such things than might be appropriate. " oddly enough, she felt comfortable sharing her oddities of interests with him.
her expression brightened considerably at the mention of a turn through the library. while most ladies would have preferred a proper promenade along rotten row, hannah much preferred the sound of an evening in a library perusing books. " then perhaps we might postpone such an engagement to another time, " hannah suggested, forgetting to sound nonchalant about the idea, her keen interest was glaringly apparent in her tone. any suggestion of a library and the perusing of books would never fail to pique her interest, particularly if it was being suggested by a gentleman.
she guided them over to where a footman was pouring glasses of champagne, to which she exchanged her empty glass for one that was full of the bubbling delight. " perhaps, if you were to call upon my household, I would be delighted to show you our library. my uncle and I have collected a wide range of texts from all over the world. " her uncle frequently traveled on business, and in doing so he would send her books from each country. their personal library had grown to the point she frequently schemed to expand the space. returning her attention back to her companion, she regarded him with curiosity. " may I ask, if you are academically inclined, why have you settled upon being a mere tutor? it is a noble profession, no doubt, but if you have the mind for it, why not teach at eton, or such a place? "

ADELAIDE KANE as MARY STUART REIGN — 1x22: “Slaughter of Innocence” (2014)
Riff met her gaze with a look of his own. The corner of his mouth twitched up, one eyebrow rising as he stared at her. “Right.” He plucked her dance card from her wrist and stared at it for a moment before he looked back at her. “This don’t look full.” It was maybe half full. Riff didn’t really want to dance with her, but he was bored and she was the one that had brought him here. It was the polite thing to do. “Dance with me, come on. I promise I’ll be better than him.”
hannah immediately snatched the card back, gaping at his impertinence. she was equal parts irritated and shocked that he had the nerve to call her out on her little white lie. didn't he know a lady was entitled to her secrets? and so they stood for a few tense seconds, staring each other down like they were dueling with their eyes. she so hated to lose a battle. but it was entirely her own doing, after all, she had been the one to bring him to such an event. " fine, " hannah eventually relented, her expression sour at the truce. when hannah extended her hand for him to accept, she guided them to the other dancing pairs, leading them with confidence as if she were the man. " but make one false trod on my shoes and I will beat you with my fan. "

A certain heat prickled beneath Benjamin's collar, but he grinned, unabashed in his smug amusement. "Yes, I remember it well," he assured her. "You insisted my collection of Jacob Rueff's diagrams were outdated, and...well, the anatomical corrections you gave were quite informative. Invigorating, too. I didn't realize I had such a thorough study partner."
Hannah's wink caused the pink in his cheeks to spread toward his chest, so Benjamin redirected his gaze to their dozing Jane, if only to alleviate some of his present frustrations.
Hannah, mercifully, seemed intent on reprimanding Susannah, who kept darting her eyes toward Benjamin to see if he would disagree. Between the two of them, he was the most malleable parent -- he only became strict in terms of safety and play dates with other children -- but when she found no ally in his gaze, she slumped and did as she was bidden.
Hannah soon sent Susannah and Eleanor off to go play (though not before Benjamin swooped in and squeezed them against his sides, tickling them until they screamed and ran off for refuge).
"You know, you're never more attractive than when you reprimand," he teased his wife. "It is by far your master stroke...and for once, I am not implying anything untoward." Hannah scooted closer and laid her head upon Benjamin's shoulder, causing him to smile and nudge his cheek down into her hair. "Penny for your thoughts? Perhaps even a full dollar?"
Her question took him off-guard, though he hummed and entwined their hands. "I don't think you want to hear my answer," he quipped, "though you should know you're an astoundingly good mother -- the very best, in fact. They want for nothing in love and guidance, and that's all a child truly needs." Benjamin arched a brow, lifting his head. "But why do you ask? Is something troubling you?"
" your diagrams were barbaric and rudimentary! it was as if he had never observed such things and made an uneducated guess. " hannah looked so scandalized at the very mention of jacob rueff's work that she did not even have a moment to be flustered at his reminder of their little study rendezvous. more often than not, their late night arguments proved to be very passionate indeed, in more ways than one. in fact, she was fairly sure their most recent argument regarding the finer merits of kant's philosophical thoughts had led to the procreation their latest unknown child on the way.
" nothing is troubling me, " she then quickly assured, raising her head from its place resting against his shoulder to level her gaze with his. " I just want to be sure that you would not mind our family growing, if that is what our future holds. " it was a silly question. in fact, he wanted to expand their family as much as possible and made it known at nearly opportunity available. it was her that had reservations at times, still so afraid after her mother's demise, and irrationally worried that someday girls would not be enough for him.
at the very thought of her recurring worries surfacing to her mind, hannah suddenly felt her stomach lurch in a fit of nausea. whether this was related to her condition or her constant worries, neither prospect comforted her. quickly getting to her feet with little jane still in her arms, she uttered quick assurances to their other two children to continue playing before going back into their house. she passed sleeping jane to the waiting maid before dashing upstairs to their bedroom. rather unceremoniously, she flopped facedown onto their bed, but the cool sensation of the silky top blanket soothed her unease. how ridiculous she felt.
it was only a few heartbeats of time before hannah heard footsteps follow her path. without even lifting her head to acknowledge her visitor, she flapped one hand in the air. " I am fine, just a bit overcome with all the fresh air. " a pitiful and unscientific excuse, but her increased headache taking the place of her seasick stomach limited her ability to think of an explanation better than jacob rueff's description of midwifery.
