He’s literally just telling it like it is
i believe that like anything else liking good (for you) and bad (for you) media can be a wholesome balanced experience. i see people who spend 100% of their time with very digestible, simplistic, all pleasure no work media (including fanfiction) building entire social movements around not feeling ashamed and trying to bully anyone who criticizes their habits and to me it's just like. you won't feel defensive if you know in your heart that you have a balanced media diet. for example, i love garbage adult animation. i love south park, family guy, rick and morty. i have venture brothers, superjail, metalocalypse, home movies and tom goes to the mayor on dvd. i do not think this is good (for me) media. it's my treat. it's the cookie sundae of media as food. i don't feel guilty about loving it or concerned in any way because i know in other areas of my life i intellectually challenge myself and i don't tie my self worth to the music or tv or movies that i like. i am consistently able to be critical of what i'm watching and think about it in a larger context. liking slop tv/books/movies isn't bad in and of itself, it's the entire context of what place it holds in your life. and if it's enough of your life that criticisms of the industry or subculture (now intertwined) that produce the particular slop that makes you smile make you unlistening, angry and scared, that is too much of your life
