“Tre Kronor,” she corrected the woman, for she had given the castle a wrong name. There was no malice in her tone, she simply had trying to save the Lady any embarrassment for using the wrong name in front of the Swedish court. Her bold statement had no sense, for Adaline knew by fact Sweden and Germany held a wonderful relationship. And she was absolutely sure Isobel had one of the best chambers, for Adaline herself had been there with her friend. It did not surprise her that a Lady-in-Waiting would not enjoy the treatment as the royal family. Adaline and Arthur had a wonderful bedchamber on a beautiful side of the castle, and she truly couldn’t complaint. It wasn’t correct to criticize the country that was hosting the meeting, but she supposed they hadn’t had the same education. A princess, and of course a Queen, knew how to be grateful for the country’s hospitality, and not act like a brat simply because she didn’t have what others did. She wondered if the German Queen had any idea of the woman she had at her service. Perhaps Isobel had been right all along and the German Queen was not as bright as they all wanted to believe. “I am very grateful for Prince Einar’s attentions. We are guests here and we must have the good grace to appreciate his efforts. I am sure your Queen would agree with me.” If Adaline cared enough, she would tell Isobel’s step-mother about her Lady’s poor judgement and loose tongue, but she was enjoying the concert and had no intention to involve herself in something as childish. She was the Queen of England after all, and soon a mother. “If there is a problem, I am quite certain Queen Caroline will make sure you are comfortable.”
Bea heard Adaline’s tone, coaxing and correcting, more than she heard her words. Bea had a habit of tuning out anyone who didn’t praise and pet her. And unfortunately for all but her, these tendencies had gotten worse as she got more comfortable at court.
“Indeed, Your Majesty,” she said, although the words were not very convincing.
“I suppose there are more important things to consider presently than a lady-in-waiting’s comfort. I am not involved in these great matters, for which I am grateful. For who would like to be in some stuffy meeting when there are entertainments to be enjoyed?”
