Penny gave the vampire a sad smile. “And i am a witch… and Gerry a werewolf. It doesn’t always work but i don’t regret it. it can be quite exciting sometimes.”

“You both age, you have a child... I can never have that. I couldn’t make him... waste his life on me. No more than I could take the heartache of losing another man I love,” she said gently.

Penny shrugged her shoulders, lifting up her wine. She wasn’t a day drinker… but she didn’t miss an excuse. “Maybe not for you. But it doesn’t have to be for you… for you to miss him.”

Claudia tapped her nails against her glass, soft eyes on the girl. “I shall always miss him, but I... I am a vampire. And he is mortal. He has enough trouble in his life.”

Penny smiled. “I think he’ll come back you know… this is his home. He has family. he loves Gerry. He adores Brooke… and i imagine you’re a hard woman to forget.”

Claudia returned the girl’s smile, she considered her to be a dear friend. That made her important in her long life, she never let many mortals in. “I do too, he does dearly love his brother. I do believe he will come back.” She patted her hand. “That is kind of you to say, though I don’t think he’d ever come back for me.”

Penny smiled slightly. “We don’t hear from him much either. I think he finds that easier, cutting off from the town for a little while. In a way i get it. Things can be intense here.”

Claudia nodded, giving the girl a gentle smile. “I believe it is good for him. I do. It is, I suppose I have that luxury of travelling for a while. Though I always return.”

“Confused…. is probably the right turn of phrase.” She rubbed her lips together. “Have you never loved anyone but him? In all that time?” She furrowed her brows. “Wow… Henrikson? I’m… I hear that he’s okay you know? He’s doing well.”

“Oh, my darling,” she said gently, rubbing her hand. “Never to that level, no. Though I have loved. I have been alive a long time.” She nodded. “Yeah, the one and only. He kissed me just before... I think that was our goodbye. I have not heard from him since. That is good to hear, thank you.”

“They… are probably equal.” She answered honestly. She sighed. “No, i have a daughter with Gerry… that bond is special. But then with Cailan… I don’t know do you as a vampire feel… a bond with your kin? Cause that’s how it is with Cailan.” She nodded, knowing that was true. “Don’t let it go to your head.”

“Ah... then I understand your head is rather confused?” she asked, tilting her head. “Yes and no. I feel a bond to... my vampires. The vampires I turned. Or Tomas I have known for many centuries. But... the man I... truly loved in my life was a witch.” She paused. “I... I loved Jeremy,” she admitted to the girl. “But I can see... how you feel for both.”

Penny shook her head. “I don’t know and i guess i’m too scared to find out. I don’t want to hurt Gerry.” She didn’t want to hurt anyone, although that was seeming impossible as time went on. “The ultimate mother.”

“Do you have stronger feelings for one or the other? Are they equal?” she asked. “Would be finding out with Cailan be worth risking what you have with Gerry?” she spoke gently, she cared for the girl and she hoped she knew that. “The ultimate mother. I may adopt that title.”

Penny rubbed her lips together, her eyes on the vampire. “I… I think I love them both. I love Gerry. He makes me feel safe and comfortable and he makes me smile. But Cailan… I care about him so much. Hurting him hurts me.” She sighed. “Thank you for that…”

Claudia nodded as she listened to the girl. Her pink lips pressed gently together. “Ah, the young witch Cailan. Do you have feelings for him... or is it simply guilt of hurting him?” She smiled gently. “I mean it, dear. I like to think I am a mother to the younger generations. And there’s a lot younger than me.”

Penny sighed, rubbing her lips together. “Do you think it’s possible to love two men?” She looked down, rubbing her hands together nervously. “And what do you see about me?”

Claudia nodded. “Yes,” she said simply. “I have lived a long time. Yes, I think that is possible. I am assuming you do?” She tilted her head. “I see a strong woman, with a loving heart who tries to do the right thing.”

She nodded slowly. “My heart is torn… my head isn’t. Gerry is Brooke’s father.” She sighed. “I know you feel… i can see it in your eyes. I saw it when you held my baby.”

“Often the heart wins the head, my dear,” she said gently, looking over her face. “You’re young... if you’re not in love. You can not force yourself. Father or not.” She smiled lightly at her words. “I do. I see people. Who they are. Not their species.”

Penny paused. “There is someone else who cares for me, how i care for him… I don’t quite know yet.” She half smiled. “I think so. But i’m still a witch. He loved her… and i guess that’s all i can say about him.”

Claudia nodded, taking in the new information. “So your heart is torn? This other person confirmed their feelings for you?” she asked, lifting her wine to her lips. “You need not say anything else. He loved her and Gerry. We’re all just people in this world, that’s where it all goes wrong. Forgetting that no matter our species, we all feel.”

She laughed slightly, sipping her wine. “And… only for Gerry?” her smile saddened. “I get that… i’m not sure i’m always that welcome. He seemed like a nice man… he came over to see Brooke a few times.”

“Is there someone else your heart beats for?” she asked the girl. “You are welcome in Gerry’s life are you not?” Claudia gave a small smile. “His first granddaughter, of course he did.”

Penny smiled, resting on the palm of her hand. “I do love him… it has been difficult and… well there’s challenges. But i do love him.” She sighed. “Did you know Dwight well?”

“I can tell you love him, I can even sense your heartbeat quicken when you talk about him,” she nodded. “Not awfully well, I’m not always too welcome in the wolf community. But there was very little trouble in town with him around.”

“I suppose that’s true.” She lifted her fork, taking a bite of her lunch. She appreciated that the vampire ordered food, even if she didn’t need it. It calmed her nerves. “I suppose… Thank you. I just want him to be okay. He sees it all as him being weak.”

Claudia watched the girl, pushing her untouched salad around the plate. She enjoyed these lunches, classy and relaxed, sitting in a nice place. “You love him and you’re there for him when he needs it. That is all part of a relationship. He will be. A lot has happened recently.”

Penny laughed, shaking her head as she lifted the wine. “Wolf related.” She shook her head. “No, no. Brooke is fine and so is Gerry. Just… pack business. It’s got Gerry so stressed and I can’t really do much about it.”

“Well, you are dating one, it’s not that far of a stretch,” the vampire smiled. “Good, I am glad to hear they are well. Darling, just letting him talk to you and being there is doing something. I promise.”

Penny smiled. “When are you not right, Claudia?” She laughed into her drink. “It is not witch related. But i can’t tell you any more then that.”

Claudia grinned. “See, this is why you’re my favourite,” the girl laughed gently. “So wolf related then. Is everyone alright? Your family?”

Penny smiled, looking down at her food. The vampire was quite formal about her dinners. She didn’t eat at bars. “I am not sure whether i should share the information and you know it.” She smiled lifting her wine. “Maybe your instincts are off.”

Claudia tapped her painted nails against her glass. “But I am right though, there is something to know? Something has happened?” She nodded. “And if you can’t tell. It’s wolf or witched related.”
