The Woodcutter and the Hamadryad Aigeiros. Oil on Canvas (1870) French academic painter Émile Bin (1825–1897) created this scene for the Paris Salon of 1870. The subject comes from Greek mythology. A hamadryad is a tree nymph physically bound to her specific tree, destined to die if it is destroyed.

The scene catches a woodcutter mid-swing as his axe splits an ancient oak, only for the nymph Aigeiros to emerge directly from the trunk. Rather than fighting back, she holds up a calm, steady hand to halt his motion. Her gesture acts as a quiet warning, instantly opening his eyes to the sacred life he was about to destroy out of pure ignorance and materialism. Loc.
