 What are the Clearing dates?

UCAS Clearing runs from early July (the same day International Baccalaureate (IB) results are published) until late October.

 While you can't apply through Clearing until you have your results, you should avoid being in Clearing all the way up to the October deadline. The longer you leave it, the fewer places will be available.

 How will you know if you're in Clearing?

Your UCAS Track status will say ‘you are in Clearing’ or ‘Clearing has started’.

 If you didn’t match the entry requirements but your Track status doesn't say you’re in Clearing, it could mean your results haven't been updated or the universities are still considering your application.

Results day FAQs

Results day can be an emotional time and it can be hard to organise all the thoughts and questions you may have.

 How should you prepare for results day?

Whatever your expectations, you should have a contingency plan in place.

 You should carefully consider all your options, including resitting your exams, deferring, taking a gap year or reapplying next year.

 If you're feeling nervous, talk to people who've experienced results day already, whether that’s a parent, older sibling, friend or teacher.

 How do you check if I have applied at a university ?

The best way is to regularly check UCAS Track.

 UCAS Track updates as soon as updates are received from universities. Even if you don't get the grades you need, you should check UCAS Track first as you may still be offered a place.

 Remember to have your password and ID number for UCAS Track at hand, and check your email inbox isn’t full and can accept bulk emails. Many university subjects list send confirmation messages automatically to a list of their applicants.

Exchange programmes

The most affordable way to get a taste of university life abroad is through an exchange programme, where you’re enrolled at a UK university but study part of your course overseas. You remain eligible for a UK student loan and may even have access to grants to help with living costs.

 One of the best-known exchange schemes is the Erasmus+ programme. Although the UK has now officially left the EU, current projects will continue until their funding ends. As well as whatever maintenance loans you’re eligible for at home, through Erasmus+ you’ll receive a grant to cover the additional costs of living abroad. You don’t usually pay tuition fees to the international university and the fees due to your UK institution are waived for the time you’re away.

 Not all courses are suitable for this programme, so check with your institution (or proposed institution) in the first case. ISEP (International Student Exchange Programs) runs an exchange programme that may be more suitable for those looking to study further afield than Europe.

 Studying your whole degree overseas

If you want to study an entire degree abroad, you’ll usually have to apply to uk university courses independently. This can be financially difficult as loans aren't available from the Student Loans Company if you study outside the UK.

 Bear in mind:

 Living expenses can be difficult to fund as in most cases there are no loans or grants to cover them

Many universities and countries ask for high fees paid upfront

You can self-fund your study through part-time work but some countries don’t allow you to work while you study

Finding a job abroad can be hard if you don’t speak the local language well, so consider working in the UK beforehand and during breaks

You can take out a personal loan from a UK bank but unlike a student loan, repayments will be due immediately and interest starts accruing as soon as you access the loan

Scholarships

There are scholarships available for international students at universities around the world. These can be awarded on merit or need, and vary in the amount provided. However, competition is tough, especially at undergraduate level.

 Look at the websites of universities you’re interested in to find out what schemes you may be eligible for. Some US organisations provide awards to help US students study in the UK, such as the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and Rotary International. You can search databases at InternationalScholarships.com and ScholarshipPortal.eu.

What's UCAS Clearing? How does Clearing work?

UCAS Clearing is a way of matching universities without students to students without a university place.

 The January intake universities in uk Clearing system was created for when things don’t go according to plan but it can be used by almost any potential student, whether applying late or for strategic reasons – for example, trading up to a university you initially thought you wouldn't get into.  

 Who can use UCAS Clearing and Clearing self-release?

Many students are eligible. This includes those who haven't got the grades required to secure their place as well as those who applied later, got no offers or don’t want to take the place they’ve been offered.

 UCAS applications received after the deadline, or students who miss their grade target, are automatically entered into Clearing.

 Clearing self-release allows students who are already holding a university place to release themselves into Clearing rather than wait for their original choice of university to release them. Self-release is available in UCAS Track from early July.

 Those who haven't yet applied to any universities can also apply through Clearing once they have their results. However, you'll need to have completed a UCAS application to use Clearing.

 You can apply online through UCAS Apply. Don't forget you'll need a reference as well as your personal statement.

 What's the most effective way to use Clearing?

Preparation, positivity and pragmatism are key to going through Clearing successfully.

 A positive attitude can go a long way to being successful in Clearing. Make a list of universities and their phone numbers and email addresses. Think about what you might say beforehand and make notes if you need to.

 When you call universities, be positive about yourself and the university. Remember you're competing for places with other students.

 Make the call yourself (unless you have a disability preventing this). Universities are more likely to offer you a place if they’ve spoken to you personally.

 Be prepared to say why you want to study  in the uk that particular course at that particular institution and what you can offer. Be ready to answer questions on your exam results, your motivation and your experience. Prepare your own questions to ask.

You may think studying abroad is expensive, but with UK universities charging up to £9,250 a year, studying at home isn't necessarily cheaper than going overseas. Some European countries, such as France and Germany, have lower tuition fees and a similar cost of living to the UK. However, in most of Europe there are no student loans available to cover costs, so the upfront cost you’ll have to pay is much higher.

A league table position mainly reflects a university's performance from year to year. However, many have built a reputation over time, while some lower down are still carving out a niche. Using the league tables

League tables, when used effectively, can play a part in choosing January intake uk universities. They help you identify and refine a shortlist of institutions to consider. Your ideal uni won’t necessarily be the one at the top of the table, with the highest-grade offer, or where you’ve been told to go by friends or family. The Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) was introduced in the 1960s. This qualification was available to all students.

The CSE qualification had a lower level as to O Level because it was administered on a regional basis, while O and A-Levels were administered by examination boards who had contact with universities. Since part of the CSE system was evaluated within schools, it caused criticisms of low standards. In addition, the nature and value of qualifications, because there were two different systems, were confusing for some people.

Throughout the 1970s, the pressure to merge the systems began to rise.

Under the Callaghan Labour government, Education Secretary Shirley Williams (now Baroness Williams of Crosby) took the political decision to proceed with a merged “GCSE” system, but the election of the Conservatives in 1979 postponed any action for several years.

In 1984, Conservative Education Secretary Sir Keith Joseph decided to proceed with a merger, on the premise that the new qualifications should be based on general and subject-specific criteria approved by himself.

IGCSE & GCSE; what’s the difference?

The IGCSE is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education.

GCSE grades

The National Qualifications Framework has two levels, level 1 is foundation qualifications and level 2 is intermediate qualifications. GCSE grades A to C are considered as Level 2 and grades D to G are Level 1.

GCSE syllabuses are set, examinations administered and certificates awarded by five “awarding bodies” or Examination Boards: AQA, CCEA; Edexcel; OCR; WJEC.
