Loose, either silk or cotton with optional frilling and decoration

Often cut at the crotch for menstrual fabric

Yes union suits for women were a thing in winter!

Allowed breathing room in summer and kept you nice and warm in winter

All in one combinations (like a slip) were very popular

I’ve been reading a lot of fanfic lately that makes mention to “panties” - which wouldn’t come into existence for a number of years after both RDR games are set. Even Abigail is still wearing a classic late 1800s design in the early 1900s! These women live outside major cities and didn’t have many resources around to keep up with the latest trends, unless they were particularly good with a needle and thread and could pick up a pattern from their closest store.

Let’s keep in mind the Victorian era was one of prudishness and women were not meant to be on display (save for our beautiful working women of the saloon). Underwear followed this to a T and was meant to cover as much of your body as possible. But - it can be incredibly sexy if you write it so! So don’t be afraid to do a little research before getting down and dirty in your fics ;)

Thank you for this information! I looked in to this myself before I wrote my first rdr fanfic because just looking at the women in camp I could see most of them were wearing some sort of long boomers under their skirts. I always try and write “bloomers” or “undergarments”. Something to that effect but I try to keep it vague when the characters are undressing unless the scene actually calls for a character to consider what the other is wearing. It’s really good to have picture resources too so that people can start to imagine what their characters would look like in this type of underwear.
