i'm bad at keeping this blog updated but i really am so mentally done with zom/rom/com. this author is blatantly like, unfunny. to me. and i hate that she's doing the thing that people complain about in marvel movies: no scene can just sit without her inserting some sort of joke in it. i think she's done pretty well to show these characters care about each other, and care about each other's safety and happiness, but like otherwise it's just so. painfully. unfunny. i also feel like her sex scenes are just so incredibly whatever because there's so little character to them. lost opportunity for character study imo!!
one of the audiobooks i'm currently reading is the southern book club's guide to slaying vampires by grady hendrix. i read a different book by hendrix a few years back -- the final girl's support group -- and wasn't impressed by the turn of the plot in it. i feel like there is a big lull in action and interest in this book after patricia, the main character, fails to convince the husbands about her suspicions involving the antagonist and almost kills herself with prozac. there's something to be said about the antagonist blending in with the well-to-do men in the neighborhood and flying under the radar by simple fact that he's integrated himself into their group as one of the guys -- and, largely, into the rest of the neighborhood as well. patricia doesn't seem to really get or understand that his (and her neighbors') shared whiteness grants him implicit sympathy and protection. patricia herself even exhibits her own desire to stand with her white friends. it takes very little for a white friend to try to soothe her concerns, to tell her that everything is fine, to demean the evidence a black women has given her on the basis of "her education isn't the same as ours".
it's an interesting inclusion in using vampires as a metaphor to discuss racism, gentrification, and misogyny. i don't know if it's going to be as hard hitting as other medias like amc's iwtv or the sinners movie, particularly because this book does not focus on the experience of black people until it's a white child who is in danger.
anyway! excited to finish this book now that the interest has sparked back up.
my audiobook libby loan for hum by helen phillips finally came up not too long ago, and i was so excited to read this book bc the premise seemed v cool when i first came across the book last year.
it's clearly a speculative sci-fi but... it's a little miserable! and i know that's the point, the environment and cultural change in the present this is set in is supposed to be miserable and offputting. it's why the mc is miserable, but i also feel like it's a little heavy handed at times? there's been at least three times that the mc has dropped "oh if only the forests hadn't burned..." which i GET, there is a lot of grief, but gosh, it's just a heavy read.
oh boy, i just finished reading fried green tomatoes at the whistle stop cafe by fanny flagg which i've been meaning to read for years! i wanted to read it initially because of the queer relationship between idgy and ruth (and truly it's not even queer subtext, those two women are clearly together), but i was so pleasantly surprised by how much i loved the friendship between evelyn and ninny!
like, the friendship is so tender. oh to be an unsatisfied housewife who has only ever done what she thought was necessary and feeling ignored, unloved, and washed up. and then to meet an old woman who just adores you! who loves your company, who loves sharing food with you, and who believes in you more than anyone else ever had. and to end the book with recipes from the cafe! i could cry, there's so much love between all the characters. yes there is queer love, but i wouldn't single this out as a queer love story on it's own. it is one of the hearts of this story, but just one of them!

also the way i know this author doesnât know anything about western wear is there is NO WAY that even at a used clothing boutique you can pay 41 bucks for some shorts, a couple of tops, AND LEATHER COWBOY BOOTS. even if theyâre fake leather theyâre not gonna cost like 20 bucks

i picked up my current audiobook because it was immediately available on libby as a non fiction that looked interesting, and i'm afraid it's a little dry :(( the premise is super interesting: going into how animals understand death and trying to deconstruct the way humans centralize their experience in understanding the experience of animals. and while some of what she says is fascinating (like once again: the need to avoid both attribute too much humanness to animals and also not to give animals enough credit) but it is a little repetitive.
also: i think i mostly want to be done with the bell jar (a book club read except the book club is NOT participating) so i can move on to ancillary sword
not to use this blog only when i want to bitch about a book, but i've never DNF'd a book faster than in the half hour i read of bloom by delilah dawson.
like, i kind of have a thing against storygraph including "do you find the characters likeable?" as part of their review page, because i feel like likeability equates to quality for some people. i think having a main character be compelling, be interesting, and make sense is more important, and yet this main character got none of that and ALSO wasn't likeable. it's another case of like, i feel like the author relies way too much on "teehee relatability humor!!" which feels extremely ingenuine and rips me out of the book so, so fast.
plus, talking to a friend who'd read it (and gave it 1 star lmaooo) and seeing a snippet of a later bit confirmed it's not gonna get better, or at least lest annoying. which is a pity! i think there is something there, there's potential in an insecure woman falling way too deep over her head for an overwhelmingly powerful woman, but the presentation just was NOT there.
So DNF, would give it a 1 star just based on the little I listened to.
