Unknown Ornament Late 19th To Early 20th Century molded resin of the kauri tree (Agathis australis), known as kauri gum Overall: 22mm (width), 10mm (height), 22mm (length) Museum of New Zealand - Te Papa Tongarewa; Collection: History Gift of the Guard Family, 1993
This small heart is made from a molded piece of kauri (native New Zealand tree: Agathis australis) gum. When New Zealand's kauri gum collecting industry was at its height, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, most of the gum was exported to make varnishes and floor coverings overseas. However, gum was also a popular material locally and was crafted into jewellery, keepsakes, and small decorative items.; This piece of gum comes from the Guard family collection.
