Bentley was just sixteen when her life came crumbling down around her. Her wealthy parents were arrested for fraud and the law came down hard on them. Straight to jail. Do not pass go. Practically everything was reprocessed or taken for evidence. None of it was ever returned to her, or her family. All the luxuries and wealth that Bentley grew up with were gone in an instant and all she had left was a couple of tote bags she managed to stuff before being sent off to live with her oldest brother.
Her social circle soon shriveled. She had been friends with some people for as long as she could remember but without money she wasn't their friend anymore. Those who stuck around either pitied her or they excluded her in other ways. Sure she could still come to their house but she couldn't go out with them anymore. She had no money. Even if she got a job it wasn't enough to fund a lifestyle like theirs. Bentley grew resentful and started stealing from her friends. First it was just little things. A bracelet left on a dresser. A lipstick tube she borrowed and never returned. Then it was clothes, money, and more expensive jewelry pieces. Most of these friends didn't even notice, but one friend did and her parents were pissed off about it. She was still a minor so the consequences were mild, but it was just the beginning of her legal troubles.
Bentley would spend the next several years in and out of trouble. While her brother, Ford, was trying to change the narrative on his life and the family, she was gaining the wrong kind of attention. She tried to sort of follow in his lead. The influencer thing, a few modeling gigs, but if she wasn't drunkenly stumbling out of an Uber, or getting caught shoplifting, then she was yesterdays news. Then when her mom took her own life, she found herself really spiraling out of control. Eventually landing in rehab and emerging as a whole new person once she left. Or so people thought.
She just learned how to fake it. On the surface she had finally pulled it together. She was getting real modeling gigs. Her Instagram followers were up. People seemed proud of her and she was getting praised for turning her life around. But she was still struggling with the same stuff she had been dealing with for years. Bentley still stole. She was still drinking. And she had even started to dabble in other "recreational" activities. Maybe she wasn't getting away with it as much as she thought, but since she wasn't making scenes anymore people didn't bother offering help.
The new image she had built for herself came down just as suddenly as her parents empire had. While at a club, it was raided by the police and she was found with cocaine on her person. Honestly she expected to get a slap on the wrist. But the courts were unforgiving. Maybe they did it because of her parents, or they wanted to make an example out of her, but regardless of their reasons behind the harsh decision, she was sentenced a year in jail followed by probation, community service, and rehab.
Now she's out of jail and on probation. Her oldest brother has closed his doors on her. They're both too old for her bullshit, he says. Somehow she hasn't burned bridges with all of her siblings, though, and has been allowed to crash at Ford's house while she figures her life out. He's even offered her a job at his record store. Bentley gets why people might not trust her, and she wants to show that she really has changed this time, but deep down she doesn't know if that's actually true either.
