I’ve been pondering on the idea of overshoot lately. Basically, the world is going to go way past 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels before (possibly, maybe) cooling things down later. So if that’s where we’re headed, then COP can’t be all about prevention anymore. It needs to shift its focus to managing the mess.

I think the whole COP process needs a do-over, and fast. Not just setting targets and making pledges, but figuring out what happens after we’ve already missed those targets. Of course that’s easier said than done, and we don’t want to make it seem like mitigation and adaptation efforts are futile because we won’t make it anyway. Rather, we need to be made to feel the urge to do even more. It’s uncomfortable for sure to admit we’re at the forefront of disaster, but the sooner we admit it and act upon it, the more comfortable and reassured we will be in the near future when disaster strikes.

COP30, being hosted in Brazil of all places, should be centered around adaptation, loss & damage, and climate justice. These can no longer be side conversations, these need to be the main agenda. Also, carbon removal and geoengineering aren’t abstract ideas anymore. They’re coming, and they need real governance. Who’s in charge? Who benefits? Who bears the risks?

Overshoot isn’t the end, but it does mean the beginning of a very different kind of climate politics. COP needs to catch up.

It’s one thing to model disasters, calculating the economic impact of a flood, projecting the emissions from a wildfire, and simulating supply chain disintegration. But to grieve what is being lost is another thing entirely. And we are losing so much. I’m not just referring to vanishing species of wildlife and continuously rising temperatures, but places. Places we grew up, places that hold memories, places that echo music, laughter, and love. What I’m talking about is grief, grief for a world that’s changing faster than our emotions can keep up with.

I’ve never agreed with the notion that there’s beauty in grief. Grief is not beautiful. Grief is pain. Grief is heart wrenching. Having said that, last week’s performance opened up a new dimension of thought for me. Yes grief is not beautiful, but hope is. Artists and storytellers are doing something that technical data cannot achieve - they are giving form to our despair. They are validating these complex emotions we ourselves cannot fully comprehend, and in doing that they are opening up a space for presence, vulnerability, and raw honesty. People like the Zero Omissions Theatre Company are teaching us how to find comfort in uncertainty, feel fear without being consumed by it, and maybe even how to hope.

Their production A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction isn’t just a performance, it’s a reckoning. You sit in total darkness while cyclists on stage generate electricity in order to light the room. You listen to the sound of them pedalling, you register the labour it’s taking. And the moment the lights come on, you realise one thing - this is the reality we live in - where energy has a cost, change requires effort, and we all have a role to play.

I’ve always been a massive proponent of renewable energy and the knowledge I’ve gained at the climate school thus far has been eye opening. As I explored topics for my Quant project, I started to look into how renewable energy generation varies with the atmospheric temperature. One aspect I’ve found that is often overlooked is how fluctuations in temperature affect the reliability and efficiency of wind and solar power. This topic has been of particular interest to me lately because it’s not just a climate science issue, it’s a climate justice and inequality issue as well. Wealthier communities can afford grid upgrades, battery storage, and diversified energy sources, whereas indigenous and marginalized communities face energy poverty, paying higher costs for unreliable power. The fight for climate justice isn’t just about reducing emissions—it’s about ensuring that renewable energy works for everyone, not just those who can afford it.

The Power of Connection and Systemic Change

What I find really beautiful about social media algorithms is that they really know who we are and what we believe in. It has the power to connect like minded people, and in the fight against climate change, this power is essential. Our class discussion emphasized how forming alliances across industries can create real change. I loved how Katherine Hayhoe said that her Christian faith drives her climate work because religion is rooted in love - that resonated with me deeply. Climate change, at its core, is a failure to love and care for one another.

This idea ties into Donella Meadows’ Leverage Points, which shows how small interventions in complex systems can lead to massive change. She highlights that the most powerful leverage points involve shifting mindsets and challenging deep-rooted paradigms. If we can change how society values climate action, not as a burden but as an act of care, we can propel the entire system toward sustainability. Social media can play a crucial role in this by amplifying new narratives, promoting collaboration, and helping reshape public perception. The challenge is to use these platforms not just for connection, but for systemic transformation.
