Signing session in Berlin, 26.08.1997 // discovered in better quality by RammWikiTV & SeidBereit Trading Crew 🎬 // thank you to the dear anon who sent me this 🤍
A lovely anon requested a translation of the 1995 VIVA interview, which most likely took place on the same day as the now resurfaced VIVA clip. While I translated it bit by bit, I once again realised how chaotic the whole interview was conducted (some parts weren't even quite comprehensible), and how bizarre some of the questions were - no wonder the guys quickly got fed up with giving interviews. Translation under the cut 📰
(Starting to translate from 0.27min mark, since it’s a lot of chaos and chatter before that.)
All 3 of them: Hello, we are Rammstein, and you’re watching Viva.
Interviewer: Christmas, New Year, Easter… turn of the year 2000, driver's license test, whatever…
Schneider: We're not like that….
Interviewer: Well, if you don’t like that, you don’t have to. (Meaning that they don’t have to send out greetings).
Paul: If we were good at this, we could [inaudible].
Schneider: Not even this (meaning the announcement before) was good.
Paul: We’re more…we’re not…
Schneider: …not that relaxed.
Paul: We’re not really television-savvy guys. We’re more simply structured, you know.
Interviewer: As a simple structured person, how do you deal with such television professionals? I mean, we’re all quite dirty bastards who all want to rip you off.
Paul: Right.
Interviewer: Putting words in your mouth, twisting statements…do you have a good working legal department?
Paul: Yeah! We have seven laywers and they’re already waiting for hassle and are excited for trouble.
Richard: We’re also doing sports, like swimming and training.
Interviewer: So you could help yourself in such situations? (Richard nods very confident).
Schneider: We’re just taking the camera away.
Paul: Our singer always just eats the video tapes, if the recordings suck.
Interviewer: Also a nice kind of diet. What kind of additional safety precautions did you take so that the hordes of wild fans don't rip your clothes off?
Richard: Made lots of children. (Paul snickers)
Interviewer: Children are currently a very sensitive topic in today's pop music when you aim at Michael Jackson for example.
Paul: …… we have children of our own, we don’t need to fuck any.
Interviewer: How old are the children?
Paul: Oh, it varies. From 30 to 3.
Interviewer: Who has the oldest child?
Paul: The singer. He has 4 or 5 children, right, and the oldest is…
Richard: 12!
Schneider: 16.
Richard: 12!
Paul: 12. It doesn’t matter how old the kid is, don’t you think?
Interviewer: Is this (the kids) going to be Rammstein 2?
Paul: …now you’re asking dumb questions, how did that happen? Up until, everything was so nice…now ask other questions, next question?
Interviewer: How about a Christmas-[inaudible, probably something like announcement/greeting].
Paul: Well, we wish you a happy new Christmas, and a healthy new year, and Easter, and to come back to the driver's license test – have fun with that (all of them snicker).
[Little bit inaudible and chaotic part about Christmas, Richard jokingly referring to a potential Christmas album, Schneider suggest they could sing ‚Oh Christmas tree‘.]
Paul: Actually, we shouldn't be so funny; we should be more settled.
Interviewer: Just asking you personally, even though the red light (the recording light) is still on, but do you even enjoy all this media-[inaudible]... You've got a tough road ahead of you now.
Paul: It’s annoying. We didn’t want to do interviews.
Schneider: Originally, we didn’t want to do any interviews. But the record label said: no!
Interviewer: A lot of time gets wasted like this [inaudible] you could maybe use it more purposefully.
Paul: No, that doesn’t matter. We know that since we're newcomers, nobody knows us. We want to...We want that someone knows us, so we have to put up with the stress. We know we have agreed to it, that's why we can live with it.
Richard: I see it more like a rhetoric training. Learning how to speak freely…with success. We couldn’t talk at all in the beginning. Now…
Paul: …it’s okay. [Inaudible question by the interviewer] No, we actually just wanted to do music, we didn’t want to babble.
Interviewer: At some point, will you say: 'Okay, we reached a point where interviews are well intended, but not necessary anymore'?
Schneider: Yeah, if it’s possible someday. It’s extremely difficult for us to be cool and relaxed and not saying anything which isn’t stupid. (Richard grabs the microphone and hides it, probably a bit embarrassed)
Paul: (aimed at Richard) No, that’s good, the own weaknesses… you are who you are. (takes the microphone from Schneider) The VIVA sign has to be at the front, so the people know what they watch, you know? (turns the microphone a bit) If you hold it like this, it could already be another tv channel.
Interviewer: Could be the channel with the three letters (referring to the German tv channel RTL).
Paul: With the three letters nobody knows. …Yeah, what he said is really good (referring to Schneider, who has not said anything). (Asking Schneider): Can I poke you in the eye real quick? (proceeds to push the mic into Schneider’s eye). Okay.
Interviewer: I wish you for the upcoming-
Paul: (gleefully pointing at Richard) Take him into the shot again, he always doesn’t want to get famous! (Richard grins quite awkwardly)
Interviewer: [inaudible] Have fun, I wish you lots of on-stage experiences..[inaudible]
Paul: Keep up the good work.
Interviewer: You also keep up the good work.
Paul: Well, we’re just starting, so…
Richard: (looking up at the clearly quite tall interviewer) Stop growing!

Day 31: Favorite Picture of the Whole Band Together
This is the last day of the challenge. I can't believe I got to finish it and that it was such a ride to complete. I really enjoyed it, and I would like to participate in more of these challenges in the future.
Day 31: Favourite Picture of the Whole Band Together 🤍💚💛💙🩷❤️
My obvious choice is my header picture. I have a vague memory of seeing this picture in a magazine once. I can't remember the context - could be an article about LIFAD or an ad to a concert they gave here, so it was between 2009 and 2013, maybe?
Anyway, it really fascinated me. Their dark clothes and general style, that really atmospheric late 00s filter... Till kinda creeped me out with that smile, Flake felt out of place so he also startled me and Schneider just looked... great? I couldn't take my eyes off of him! The others didn't left a big impression on me (sorry guys, you do now 🤗) but it's crazy that I still remember how I felt about a picture of a random German band i saw years ago.
There's other pictures that show their identity as a band better than this one, but this how I got to know them in the first place, thus my main choice.
And my honourable mention goes to another LIFAD-era pic:
I love it for a multitude of reasons. It's casual, they look cozy with those clothes, they're sitting down, having some drinks and discussing new ideas. All of them listening to Oliver, the most quiet member of the band, giving him their full attention. Paul and Richard with their guitars, Schneider with his drumsticks, Flake and Till holding some papers (containing lyrics? tabs? other ideas? recipes? some silly dick doodles? who knows). Their facial expressions, whether they're smiling of in full attention mode...
To me, it shows what Rammstein is all about: 6 men who, despite their differences, manage to creat something bigger than themselves, even with all the conflits and challenges they've had to face over the years. And, most importantly, their friendship and loyalty to each other. And to their fans as well.
Wir halten die Augen offen / Wir halten uns den Arm / Sechs Herzen die brennen / Das Feuer hält euch warm ❤️🔥
They're one of the most special bands I've had the pleasure to discover. And if there's one thing I've learned with this challenge, is how much I still have to uncover.
And so this it it. The last day of the challenge! I want to thank @wizzardclown for creating it because, thanks to it, I've been learning so much stuff. And seeing everyone's choices has been a delight 🥰 can't wait to participate in another one!
