After moving as many times as they had, Landon longed for the day that the entire process would no longer be such a pain in the ass. The new house was nice but it was a lot bigger than what they vampires were used too - it also meant the entire place was flooded with boxes. Naperville was the newest place of residency after having spent the holidays and colder months of the year down in New Orleans. The small suburb was the opposite of what Landon had been grown accustomed to recently but he was a firm believer that change was always a good thing.
Oh, and there was the tiny fact that Naperville was the newest home to his favorite werewolf family.
To this day Landon wasn’t entirely sure how he and Julian had managed to get in so deep with the Payne’s. He remembered making his way from the grocery store one night when he saw tiny figures on the rooftop next to his and the next thing he knew he was catching eight year old Archibald Payne.
The rest was history. He hadn’t been able to shake them since - which was perfectly okay with him.
They were all complete terrors as children. At times Landon couldn’t help but feel like a third parent, especially when Ella and Auggie would call him ‘dad’. But as the years rolled by and the Paynes finally gained some sense, Landon, thankfully, acted more as an older brother. He had a relationship with each of the Payne children but secretly, although he’d never admit it, Archie, the only human of the bunch, was his favorite.
They’d been through a lot together - from Archie’s first hockey game, to his first school dance, first date, and more, Landon eventually began to view the boy/man as his friend, probably his best friend aside from Julian.
All things considered, leaving Canada had been difficult…but not before he forced each of the Payne’s to promise to keep in contact with him - which they did. The years went on and throughout the course of letters, emails, skype dates and surprise visits to Archie’s away games, Landon honestly felt like he hadn’t missed a thing. But when he opened his door and saw Archie standing there, a huge smile broke out on the vampires face. “Dude!” he exclaimed, stepping forward and wrapping his arms painfully tight around the man, accidentally lifting him from the ground.
“Holy shit, man, you look great!” he noted, finally putting Archie down and examining him head to toe, “you’ve really been taking those workout sessions seriously, haven’t you?” Had it really been that long? It had been around Christmas when Landon had last seen the man but it felt longer. “Come in! We still got boxes and shit all over the place, but we got a working fridge and pizza coupons.”
Archie braced for the impending gut squeeze in the form of Landon Ellis, letting out a soft oof as a rock hard body lifted his own feet off the ground, followed by a very manly guffaw (not a giggle). He’d missed him tons. Once Landon let him down, Archie moved to pass him and head inside, but not before reaching a hand up to run over the vampire’s hair, ruffling it fondly before finally making his way inside and to the kitchen. “Yeah, I actually started on a new diet. It’s basically 12 hours a day of hockey practice followed by four hours of The Sopranos because apparently Ella thought it would be a good idea to let Mia watch HBO and now that’s all she’ll agree to watch.” Archie pulled a beer and a bottle of True Blood out before shoving the rest in Landon and Julian’s fridge before continuing. “And then when I finally settle in around 2 am, a barn animal comes into my room and squeals in my ear as my daughter pulls its tail.” Anyone else would have been oddly put off by the story’s odd turn, but Archie shrugged offhandedly. “Auggie stole a pig.” Totally normal. “He told me it was a teacup pig but this thing is starting to get big. It was chewing on my furniture this morning. It shits bigger than Auggie’s head but I think that might be because Auggie lets it eat everything.” His siblings were the worst. Archie hopped up on the counter, taking a mindless look at the pizza coupons before wincing as he thought of his siblings. “You guys haven’t told them that you’re in town yet, right?” Assessing the boxes scattered neatly around, Archie could only assume that they had yet to find out, otherwise there would be a disaster area in their wake. Archie downed half of his beer in one gulp before looking around. “Hey – where’s Julian? What’ve you guys been up to? Want help unpacking?” he offered, setting his beer down and adjusting his cap to sit backwards atop his head.
Once Archie was inside, the vampire closed the door and all but ran after the other man. The pair ended up in the kitchen, another smile forming on Landon's face when he was handed a bottle of his favorite True Blood - at this point it would be a shock if the Payne’s didn't know what type of blood he preferred, just like Landon knew what type of beer, cereal, and oreos the wolves preferred. He could proudly say that he knew the Paynes better than most...even if most (i.e: any sane person) wouldn't see that as a something to be proud of.
"Well it's definitely working," he commented, looking over and admiring his friends biceps as he cracked open his beer. Landon followed suit, opening his bottle of True Blood and tossing the cap on the counter. "How's Mia?" he then asked, his face lighting up at the mention of his newest favorite Payne member. It wasn't anything personal, he loved all the wolves equally but Mia Payne was something else. She as the daughter of his best friend and brother, how could he not love the little munchkin? Also, it was really no secret that Landon loved children, even if he gave up the ability to have any of his own a long time ago.
"Wait, you guys got a pig?" he asked, his eyes widening slightly. Of course they had a pig, why wouldn't they? They already had five people living in one house, not to mention the strays Bobbi, Ella and Auggie probably brought home at least once a week. "Dude, that's awesome! Good call on your brothers part. Cats and dogs are overrated," he added, sarcasm evident in his tone but a dumb smile remained. God, Landon had missed this. He missed hanging out with Archie and listening to the dumb but endearing things his siblings did. He missed his werewolves.
Landon took a sip from his True Blood, shaking his head. "No, not yet. But Julian said he saw Bobbi at the dog park with this tall, blonde guy. He told he me didn't want to disrupt their date so he just slipped by." He shrugged slightly, leaning back against a nearby counter so that he was facing Archie. "I don't know where he's at. He's been acting kind of weird since we moved here. Probably has something to do with a woman," he guessed, a grin forming on his lips. So long as that woman wasn't Catherine Orsini, maybe a potential romance was exactly what Julian needed.
“Dude, I’m not going to make you help us unpack,” he said, looking rather offended at the thought. “No, I want to hear more about what you’ve been up too. Me and Julian have been doing the same shit since like the 50′s, and that’s traveling. Seriously, it’s nothing exciting,” he assured his friend with a laugh, eager to hear about the grand life of Archibald Payne.
Naomi wasn’t your typical party girl type. Sure, she loved going out and getting drunk with her friends with the best of them, but the thing was, she didn’t really have any friends. Well, except for (insert future Aaron Johnson character’s name here lol) obviously. Since the…
The second the creep had been pulled away from her, Naomi had recognized her savior. “Landon.” she breathed his name, her voice barely a whisper as she fell to the ground. She couldn’t tell if it was the man being forced to let go of her or the sight of the vampire in front of her that knocked her to the ground, but either way, her breath was easily taken away. She watched as he easily picked her assailant up by the shirt and marveled at his strength. She’d only known about ~vampires for a little while. Landon was the one who told her, in fact. But he had disappeared shortly after that and hadn’t exactly told her how to recognize them. As far as she knew, Landon was the only vampire she had come into contact with and the sight of his superhuman strength still caught her by surprise.
She sat, unmoving, in the sand completely transfixed by the altercation in front of her. She couldn’t tell which was more surprising the fact that Landon Ellis was here again, standing in front of her, or the fact that he was actually defending her. The way that he had disappeared on her nearly a year ago had proved to Naomi that the vampire had cared very little for her and clearly wanted nothing more to do with her. When he finally turned to face her and apparently realized who she was, she couldn’t help but stare at him. She sat there, in the sand for at least another minute or two before realizing she was still sitting down. Quickly, she rose to her feet, ignoring his offer to help her up, and moved to brush the sand off her backside. “What are you doing here?” she asked, finally looking up at him.
About a week after Landon had disappeared, Naomi had come to the hard realization that he was gone for good. And accepting that meant accepting that she’d never see him again. It had been the easiest way to force herself to move on. Now what was she supposed to do when he was standing right in front of her?
Landon stood in silence, unable to take his eyes off of Naomi. He couldn't believe it; honestly, what were the chances of this happening? When they had last seen each other the vampire had assumed it was just that - the last time they'd see each other. Ever.
He couldn't remember the last time he was this happy to be wrong.
He wasn't exactly offended when Naomi didn't take his hand considering they hadn't ended on good terms and, well, add her 'I can do it myself' attitude to the list of things Landon Ellis lov-appreciated about Naomi. "I...live here. Sort of, I'm actually out in Naperville," he began to explain, hesitation evident on his face as he spoke. The tension between them was almost suffocating. "But I come down here a lot. I like being by the lake." He paused. "But you probably knew that," he couldn't help but add, mentally kicking himself as he glanced ahead at the dark waters. This was where they had met, after all.
"What about you? Do you...know coming down here by yourself isn't the best idea," he found himself saying, unable to ignore the scent of alcohol in her blood. The look on the vampires face wasn't condescending in any way, he knew that Naomi was able to take care of herself, she'd been doing it her whole life. But the blonde wasn't normally this reckless - at least she hadn't been when Landon was with her. Suddenly the vampire couldn't help but wonder what else he didn't know about Naomi Shepherd. While their time together had been short, it felt like the pair had known each other for years...which was saying a lot, considering Landon and Naomi weren't exactly the type to open up so easily to others.
He paused momentarily, looking down at the sand before looking back at her. “You’re okay, though? He didn’t...” he trialed off, unable to finish the sentence. Landon was just relieved he had arrived when he did. The thought of something happening to Naomi didn’t sit well in his chest.
Sweet Resistance | Cat & Landon
The vampire duo had settled in Naperville with every intention of keeping a low profile and enjoying their stay. They hadn’t yet agreed on how long they’d be in town - they never really did - but it was usually implied that they wouldn’t have to worry about packing up and moving again anytime soon unless they got bored, or more importantly, managed to attract the attention of local hunters.
Landon didn’t think there could be anything worse than hunters in little ol’ Naperville. He was wrong.
He had first caught glimpse of her during their third night in town. Landon had lost two out of the three games of rock, paper, scissors, so he was sent off to buy TruBlood. He thought she had been a figment of his imagination. Because as much as he hated to admit it, Landon lost count of the times he’d found himself thinking about Catherine Orsini. It wouldn’t have been the first time he’d let his imagination run wild. Once in a blue moon was expected, especially when Cat had been pretty involved in his life at one point, even if was for just a short period of time.
Only he thought he saw her again the other night when he had gone to throw out the trash. Landon saw a figure standing on the other end of the street but when he began approaching it it was gone in the blink of an eye.
Landon couldn’t help but wonder if it was a coincidence or his guilt kicking in again for Julian’s current state. Naturally, the blonde couldn’t just sit back and wait for another unexpected encounter.
He told Julian he was spending the night at a local bar with the Paynes when in realtiy he had other plans. Landon spent a good two hours wandering the streets of Naperville in hopes of finding her when he realized that Catherine Orsinini was (still) about ten steps a head of him - he wouldn’t be able to find her, but she’d definitely find him.
Which is how Landon ended up waiting on the dock of small pond, just blocks away from his and Julian’s place. For a while he was starting to think she wouldn’t actually reveal herself…and then he caught her familiar scent. “So how long were you planning on sneaking around until we found you?” he asked, turning to see a smirking Catherine standing just a few feet away from him. It had been nearly 70 years since he’d last seen the women and she looked exactly the same.
Which okay, might have been a tiny problem for Landon…even if he preferred to walk into the sunrise than admit it.
When Cat had decided to settle in Naperville, she had had no idea just what she was getting herself into. Not only was the town inhabited by one of the most interesting, if not absolutely ridiculous families she’d ever stumbled across (i.e. the Payne’s), but to top it all off, she’d stumbled upon Greyson Luxford, her one true love who she had thought had been dead for centuries.
Turns out, Naperville wasn’t done surprising her just yet.
A few weeks ago, Cat had stumbled upon two vampires she hadn’t expected to see quite so soon. Landon Ellis and Julian Johnson had provided Cat with quite a bit of entertainment years ago. Landon, with his noble nature and Julian with his adoring fascination with her. She had quickly made it her mission to corrupt the boys and she’d nearly been successful. If it hadn’t been for that pesky vampire, who Cat refused to name, who had gotten to Landon and shortly thereafter, Julian first. Of course, the vampire had brainwashed the pair into ‘the good’ way to do vampirism and Cat had lost interest fairly quickly.
Spotting Landon first one night near a store, Cat had kept an eye on the pair for the last couple weeks or so. She didn’t follow them constantly, after all there were much more things like killing people, to be done, but she’d check in on them every once in a while. She’d even allowed Landon to spot her a time or two but had snuck away before he could get close enough. But that got old quickly enough too.
Finally deciding to make her presence, without a shadow of a doubt, known, she set out of the luxurious apartment she had made her home the last few months in search of Landon. Julian would be too easy. He would want her to find him, and deep down, Cat was fairly certain he wanted her to corrupt him. But Landon - Landon was a challenge. He still held so firmly to his sense of right and wrong. And if there was anything this age old vampiress enjoyed, it was a good challenge.
She caught his scent easily enough and followed it towards a pond she, herself, had frequented often enough. She was practically on top of him by the time he caught her scent and turned around to face her. Cat’s lips pulled upwards in her trademark smirk as she considered his question. “Until I got bored…” she said simply before moving around to sit beside him on the bench. “Which happened,” she stopped to look at her watch, as if checking what the exact time had been. “just now and is why I came to find you.”
Staring up into his gorgeously frustrated green eyes, Cat let out a sigh. “Oh, come now. Don’t tell me you weren’t enjoying our little game of cat and mouse?” she asked, almost pouting up at him as she reached over, brushing her fingertips lightly over his jaw.
Landon somehow managed to keep a neutral expression when he found himself standing just inches away from Catherine. He gave himself some credit for remaining stoic even when the blonde flashed him her gorgeous trademark smirk. For a second Landon couldn't help but wonder if he was in over his head doing this so soon - he quickly pushed those thoughts aside. He had to do this, especially if Cat was going to be a constant presence in his life again. Julian was the only reason he was doing this. Landon could handle Catherine Orsini.
Or so he thought.
He practically sighed with relief when Cat walked around him, taking a seat on the bench. "So as usual, everything is just one big game to you," he pointed out with a slight nod, as he turned around to look at her. The indifferent look on her face only confirmed what the young vampire already knew. "Glad to see you haven't changed a bit, Cat," he found himself saying, a faint smirk on his lips now. He may not have known her that long, but people like her weren't usually that hard to figure out. Then again, Catherine Orsini was unlike anyone Landon had ever met before.
Landon turned his head quickly, almost as if the vampires touch burned against his skin. He clenched his jaw slightly before looking back at her. "I just figured you would've grown tired of it by now. It didn't exactly end the way you wanted too last time," he reminded, a slightly amused, almost challenging look on his face at the vague mention of his and Julian’s maker. The progenys didn't exactly have the best relationship with their maker but the fact that she had gotten to them before Cat must've stung just a little. Not that Catherine had any sort of attachment to Julian and himself, but simply because she had lost.
"Seriously, Cat. What are you doing here?" he asked, his voice turning serious again. This wasn't a game, it was strictly business...at least to Landon it was.

After a rather pleasant reunion with the eldest of the Payne clan, Landon knew it was only a matter of time before he saw the rest. In fact, the blonde had suggested a proper reunion other night but Archie insisted that the two of them spend some quality time before the others go a hold of him and Julian. Really, how could anyone argue with that?
Either way, Landon had been meaning to stop by but he was hit with the shit storm that was Catherine Orisni entering his life once again. Naperville was meant to be a good move for them - it had been…at least until his run in with the blonde haired devil. Since then, things had sort of gone downhill. And they’d only been in town for a little over a week.
Regardless, Landon knew it was in his best interest, and probably Julian’s, to keep himself busy…and what better way to do that than to pay the Paynes a visit? The blonde haired vampire was beyond thrilled when he learned that the Paynes were his neighbors once more. That being said, Landon was out the door the second the sun went down. It took him less than 20 seconds to get to Archie’s place, a dumb, excited smile on his face as he rang the doorbell, wondering which Payne he’d be greeted with.
The doorbell rang just as Ella shoved a dollop of toothpaste on her toothbrush and began to scrub at her pearly white canines, and she poked her head out of the bathroom, looking down the hallway as she waited for someone to get the door. A pause, then: “Hey, are any of you shitsippers gonna open the door or what?” But as Ella waited for an answer, she realized that… she was the only one home? What the hell? Why was her family doing things without her? What kind of sick joke?? Ella groaned loudly and bounded down the stairs, hopping down the last couple of steps into the foyer where she yanked open the door and – Promptly spit Crest Arctic Fresh at Landon’s feet as she yanked her toothbrush out of her mouth and yelped, “I knew I smelt your scent all over Archie!” That asshole. That piece of shit. That stupid human boy toy why did he have to keep his vampire plaything all to himself?? Ella had a lot of complaints, but more than that, she was seriously missing her most favorite vampire, and before she could think to whip her phone out and leave Archie a very lengthy message, she was leaping up to wrap her arms tightly around Landon’s neck, pushing him farther out onto the stoop – a tiny feat for sure for the small, excited werewolf. Her toothbrush dripped onto his shirt, but Ella tossed it out onto the lawn, already long forgotten as she began to ramble into his ear, still tightly attached to the vamp. “Come in I’m so excited to see you how have you been when did you get here? Where’s Julian is he coming too why didn’t Archie tell me you were here are you going to stay here for awhile are you hungry?? Have you fed do you want me to run and go get some True Blood will you come in and sit do you want to go out how are you feeling?? I’m so excited to see you, you look so good but you always look good I’m sorry I got toothpaste on your shirt –” Ella detached herself, but only slightly as she grabbed his hands and yanked him inside, grinning widely up at him as she continued to yak.
Landon's face instantly lit up at the sight of Eloise Payne answering the door, toothbrush in her mouth and all. He was far too endeared by the Paynes that she could've answered the door naked and - no, that was a bad example. He was just really, really fucking excited to see another of his Paynes.
"Shit," he said with a laugh, arms wrapping around Ella when she all but jumped into his arms. He stumbled back a few steps but he managed to keep his balance this time, unlike the last time Auggie ran into his arms. The werewolf had been hanging out at the park at the time and the pair ended up breaking a bench. Good times.
"I misses you too," he began, a stupid boyish smile on his face as she watched Ella toss her toothbrush into the lawn. "We moved here about a week ago. Julian's probably stopping by soon, he said he was going to but he had to take care of something. Archie's already seen him too, I think." Landon paused for only a second and Ella was countless questions again. He could only smile.
He glanced down at his blue shirt and noticed the small toothpaste stain near the center of his chest - it was the least of his concerns right now. Landon wanted to catch with her, he wanted to know about everything she'd been up too during the past few months. "Just ate but thanks," he continued with a laugh, more so at Ella's comments. "And you look great too-" he was cut off, the blonde having yanked him inside the house rather roughly. He always did appreciate how the Payne's took charge.
Landon's gaze wandered around the foyer, letting out a whistle. "I'm glad to see you guys are doing well. When did you guys move down here again? I didn't take you guys for suburban life," he added, a slightly amused grin on his face.
As a kid, you run around the house pretending to be a superhero, and now to be doing it as a job, I feel very lucky.
