Here is a very useful crash course on modern graphic design fundamentals from the well regarded Massimo Vignelli. You are familiar with his work, even if you don't know the name. Consider taking a look at the Vignelli Canon - outlining the principles that the Vignelli studio uses to create iconic, clean, and successful graphic communications. Everything from font choices, layout techniques, color use, and much more. You can tell a true designer when he/she publishes this information in the name of good design everywhere!

After you listen to the James Corner "Terragrams" podcast you should check out this topical article from the New York Times! The third phase of the High Line is open and draws to a close the iconic project that really functioned as a capstone for contemporary landscape architecture. Not to say that the high line is without its faults, but overall it is an exciting project with a notably high quality of execution.

James Corner, landscape architect and urban designer, is the founder and director of Field Operations in New York City as well as the chair and professor of the Department of Landscape Architecture at PennDesign. He is also the author of Taking Measures across the American Landscape with photographer Alex McLean and the editor of Recovering Landscape - Essays in Contemporary Landscape Architecture. Corner discusses evolution as a landscape architect, his relationship with Ian McHarg as well as his role on the Freshkills Park and the High Lineprojects in New York.   March 23, 2006

Landscape architecture tends to have a romantic obsession with creating linkages between the built environment and nature, but what if that warm fuzzy feeling we get when we think about nature is just that. I have only scratched the surface of Dr. Morton's work and most of it goes right over my head, but critically investigating the idea of nature could lead to some significant design challenges and hopefully some interesting breakthroughs. The Conversation Podcast is a pretty fun public philosophy project involving some interesting minds, check out the rest of their work.

Coastal Resilience Conference 2014 | Galveston Historical Foundation
