WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PANAFEST

What you need to know- Brief History Pan-African Historic Festival commonly called PANAFEST was instituted by the Ghana Government in the mid 1980s after the submission of a proposal by the late Dr (Mrs) Efua Sutherland. It is a major biennial event of cultural forum for Africans and people of African descent as well as friends from other parts of the Continent. The festival is a celebration of African cultural values, history and civilization which the festival consciously makes a site for confronting the effects of enslavement, purging the pain of the diaspora, acknowledging the residual effects of the trade on the African continent and re-uniting to forge a positive future in the contemporary global environment. The venues for the Panafest are the historical towns of Cape Coast, Kumasi, Tamale and Accra-Ghana. What to expect during this year’s PANAFEST This year’s Panafest which begins on Dec 4, and ends on Dec. 12, is fully structured to ensure that you explore the beauty of Ghana by touring the nation, visiting historic and exciting places as well as socializing with people from different nations and cultural backgrounds. On your arrival in Accra, Ghana, you will be welcomed with an intriguing traditional welcome ceremony which includes cultural drumming and dancing, pouring of libations, welcome drink and orientation as you enjoy the delight of the African sun. The next two days will be spent touring the city of Accra where you will have a drive through the administrative and economic districts of Accra, the capital of Ghana which has a blend of colonial and modern architecture that summarize her history. You will visit the W. E. B. Dubois Center for Pan African Culture, the place where Dr. Dubois, an American academic and civil rights champion once worked, the Independence/ Black Star Square and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, significant landmarks in the city and the Arts Center, where different artifacts from Ghana and West Africa are sold in an open-air market. Tamale, in the Northern region of Ghana, will be your next stop where you explore the beauty of the city. The climax of Panafest, which is the Emancipation Day Celebration, is opened with a Grand Durbar of Traditional Chiefs and people of the Central Region. You will witness this grand and colorful event that showcases the splendor of Ghana's traditional rulers, dressed in rich Kente and adorned in glittering gold jewelry and also discover the African rhythm in you as you dance to the beat of the alluring 'Fromtomfrom' drums. You will experience the historic sites of Elmina and Cape Coast Castles and also be delighted as you view the beauty of Kakum National Park. Panafest is a cultural event dedicated to the enhancement of the ideals of Pan-Africanism and the development of the African continent. It was instituted by the Ghana government based on a proposal submitted by Dr. (Mrs) Efua Sutherland. It is organized biennially for Africans and people of African descent as well as all per-sons who are genuinely committed to the well being of Africans on and off the continent. Like most African festivals, it serves as a beautiful display of the different forms of colourful culture which attract a number of people from all over the world. The essential thrust of Panafest is to enhance development. The festival provides a forum to promote unity between Africans on the Continent and in the Diaspora, and affirms the common heritage of African peoples the world over by defining and promoting Africa's contribution to world civilization. Panafest attracts a diverse assembly of people - ranging from political leaders, eminent personalities and intellectuals - to business concerns, investors and tourists. Central to the celebration are major international performing and visual artists from across Africa and the Diaspora. The venues for the Panafest are the historical towns of Cape Coast and Elmina. The festival is a celebration of African cultural values, history and civilization. This consists of performances and workshops in theatre, drama, music, cinema, poetry, colloquia and lectures, colourful traditional durbar of chiefs and people of Ghana, tours/excursions to places of interest such as the slave castle dungeons. One of the goals of Panafest is to establish the truth about the history of Africa and the experiences of the African people, using the vehicle of African arts and culture. TOURISM & THE GA PEOPLE!

The beauty of Tourism in Ghana, and many other West African countries, is the diversity of the culture that you will find here. Given that Africans have roamed the continent for thousands of years and that such migrations might have been northward, southward, eastward or westward, the origin of any group of people in Africa may sometimes seem very uncertain. There are however four central ethnic groups in Ghana; Ga, Akan, Ewe and Hausa. The Ga ethnic group is exceptionally rich in cultural history which makes them one of the most interesting to focus on in touring the country. The political structure of the Ga people comprises six main independent sub-states known as the traditional districts of Gamashie, Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua and Tema. These are great destinations to put on your list of places to tour on your visit to Ghana. Jamestown, also known as Usshertown, can be found in the Gamashie district of Ghana. This is a great place to visit especially at the time of the year it plays host to the Chale Wote Street Art Festival. This is a colourful display and a creative outlet of many of the wonderful talent we have in Accra and beyond. A display of this magnitude can rarely be seen anywhere else in the same space - therefore the Festival usually attracts a large number of attendees both young and old from within and outside Accra, expatriates and tourists. Jamestown is a lively, culturally vibrant community but can be considered to be lacking in terms of local economic development. It is home to a native fishing settlement that continues to supply both local and international demand. James Fort and Ussher Fort (former prisons in Jamestown) and the Brazil House are all must see cultural sites that can be found here. Jamestown is also known to have spawned some of Ghana‟s most talented boxers. The Ga ethnic group also has an annual festival celebrated country wide between August and September called Homowo. The name Homowo is derived from two words in the Ga language meaning hunger (homo) and the action of hooting (wo) - therefore translating to “Hooting at Hunger”. It is celebrated to commemorate the day in their history when hunger was defeated, hooted at, and ridiculed. As part of the celebrations, the Ga people prepare their traditional dish called “kpoekpoe” made from fermented corn powder with palm nut soup. There is merry making and pouring of libation as they eat. It is quite a sight to behold. Have we managed to convince you? We hope so!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy New Year from the Landtours office! We hope you had a wonderful Christmas holiday and stocked up on the festive memories. A very big part of the New Year for many people is making time for reflection and allowing for some adjustments to be made in order to improve upon the years past. These resolutions serve as a means through which the coming year can be put into perspective and started on a positive and hopeful note! Have you started making your new year’s resolutions already? What kind of things have you resolved to change for 2015? We have a few suggestions that you should maybe consider adding to your list; 1. Take a BIG look at what is around you: Try to fully uncover the marvels of your immediate environment. Some travellers tend to forget to take the time to explore the areas right around them. This is very important especially for budding travellers in the process of getting the hang of things. Weekend trips just around the corner can be just as exciting and fulfilling. Make time to discover the hidden beauties around you in 2015. You will be glad that you did. 2. Discover and explore your roots: It is not uncommon for many of us to unwittingly disregard our family origins and the culture upon which our very existence leans. This new year, try to make it a point to go back to your home town or village to see your roots. Even if you are somewhat unclear about where this journey will take you; ask family members questions along the way. Culture and family heritage are terrible things to waste and let fade away generation after generation. Do your part to keep them alive. 3. Visit foreign lands: Travelling gives you the unique opportunity to completely immerse yourself in the culture and lifestyle of many different people. This is very important as it broadens your worldview, gives you a wider perspective and presents the chance for you to engage people with completely different backgrounds to yours. You can learn to interact easily with people of all cultures and make friends you never imagined you would. You may also take the opportunity to sample new and interesting cuisines from around the world. There is so much out there in the world to be explored. 4. Voluntourism: Take some time to plan and give back to a community that truly needs it. It is always fulfilling to help the people less fortunate than you are. This does not need to be an extravagant gift. Clear out that closet. Get rid of the outfits you haven’t worn in two years. Contribute to the local economy in your own little way during your travels or even right at home. 5. Spend quality time with the family- A good work-life balance is essential. Take the time to make memories with your family. The drive to do more and better at work can sometimes be consuming. Try to ensure that your family is not getting the raw end of the deal regarding your attention. Try to ensure that your family gets enough of you in the year 2015. These are just five suggestions we thought would be great to add to your resolutions this year. Good tidings for Christmas and a Happy New Year! Afehyia Pa oooo! It has truly been a wonderful year over here at Landtours. Wonderful and eventful; just the way we like it. We have welcomed a number of amazing tourists and even given many locals a fresh perspective of the country that we live in. There is so much to experience out in the world; all it takes is that first step outside. The holiday season is here again! As many of you may already know, “Afehyia Pa” is an Akan greeting that we use here in Ghana as a greeting exclusively for the Christmas holiday season. It loosely translates to “Good Year”. This greeting also doubles as a well-wish for family, friends, colleagues, and all those we encounter during the season. The response is typically “Afe Kɔ bɛ tu yɛn” which also loosely translates to “may another year go by and come back to meet us”. What plans have you made for Christmas this year? 5 Foods To Try When Visiting Ghana

Ghanaian cuisine boasts a wide selection of mouth watering and spicy dishes. From our spicy beef khebabs to our sweet plantain dishes. We have a myriad of palates that will suit anyone’s tastes. Below are five meals any traveler to Ghana should taste before leaving our shores.

1. Fufu and Soup: Fufu to Ghanaians is like croissants to the French or biscuits to Americans. It is typically made from a combination of boiled cassava, plantains or yams and then pounded into a giant mass using a mortar and pestle until it reaches a doughy consistency. It is eaten with peanut soup, light soup or any other soup available. The texture needs some getting used to, but when you do, you will enjoy every mouthful. 2. Waakye: This is a very popular Ghanaian food. It is often eaten as breakfast or lunch, and sold by vendors on the streets of big and small cities alike in Ghana. It is made boiling rice and beans together and is served with a tomato sauce. The beauty about the dish is the sides that it can come with. You will be able to choose from beef, fish, wele (cooked cow hide), plantain, spaghetti and gari (dried manioc). Try it, you won’t regret it. 3. Grilled Tilapia: Perhaps the most favored way to eat grilled tilapia in Ghana is with banku (Fermented corn/cassava dough mixed proportionally and cooked in hot water into a smooth, whitish consistent paste),shito (cooked pepper sauce), and fresh pepper sauce . Do not be surprised that the head and tail are both left on the fish since Ghanaians feel cheated if you don't leave the head on -The best part of the tilapia is in its head. 4. Red Red: This is a popular dish made from cowpeas (black-eyed peas), named for the combination of red pepper and red palm oil and served with fried sweet plantains. This has always been a favourite to all foreigners coming to Ghana. 5. Jollof rice: You haven’t eaten a proper Ghanaian meal until you have tasted the scrumptious jollof rice. This is our most cherished dish which we protect with pride and joy. Its base consists of rice, tomatoes and tomato paste, onion, salt, and chili pepper, to which optional ingredients can be added such as vegetables, meats, and other spices. The rice takes on a characteristic red colour and can be served with cooked meat, chicken, fish or vegetables separately on the plate or they can be stirred in at the end. It is often served with fried plantain and salad. Yummy.

In the 21st century, it has become more and more likely to get caught on camera. “I’m going to the store to buy some apples, but first let me take a selfie”. “I have to write this paper before class, but first let me take a selfie”. Whether randomly appearing in the background of somebody’s selfie, or posing at the site of some of your favourite tourist attractions, it has become increasingly hard to remain off camera...and why would you want to? In our contemporary and tech savvy world, everybody either has a digital camera or smart phone handy. Photo galleries double as timelines, or a stroll down memory lane. To all travellers out there, we encourage you to capture a memory forever. Needless to say, whenever you go on tour, it would be prudent to ensure that you have a device that will allow you to document your most precious moments. Take pictures and let pictures of yourself be taken. Enjoy every moment as you document them in order to reminisce later on and relive those moments time and time again.

We have particularly enjoyed the work we have been doing on a number of conferences. When you spend time going to many international conferences the world over there are different archetypes of people that one could bump into. It is important to be able to spot these people and know how to make the most of your conference visits. It is also equally important to know which archetype you fall into. We spotted this amusing yet incredibly accurate post by Brandon Gaille and we would love to breakdown some of our favourites for you here. 1. The Twitter Celeb I am sure we can all mention, off the top of our heads, the name of one twitter celebrity that has managed to gather mass appeal and popularity through their 140character gems. There are so many of such people worldwide that it would be difficult not to bump into at least one of them at an international conference. Do you have a million twitter followers? No? This may not apply to you. Keep reading! 2. The Slick Salesman Ah yes, The Slick Salesman. The Closer. The Harvey Specter type. This is a person you are bound to find at a conference. His mission is essentially to sell his brand, his company, new products, and many many more. Are you the savvy salesman at the conferences you attend? Is your mission to sell sell sell? 3. The Complacent Employee I am sure many of us have either spotted this type or unfortunately been this type at a conference before. This person would ideally appear to be disinterested in most of the activities they find around them. Most people find it incredibly difficult to hide indifference, and therefore this category of conference goer is usually the easiest to spot. You did not want to be in attendance for this conference on Cosmic Gas Clouds? Yes dear, we know. 4. The Washed-Up Rock Band *ahem* Side-eye to U2. These are generally gigs with a guaranteed large audience. We can’t really blame them for trying. 5. The Networker Many people are fully aware of the incredible networking opportunities that are available at large-scale and international conferences. NEW MICE UNIT

Hi everyone! We apologise for the long break since our last post. Things have been super exciting at the Landtours office over the last couple of months. We can’t wait to share what we have been up to with you! As you should already know, Landtours is a full destination management company headquartered in Ghana and offering inbound customized tours to Ghana and seven other West Africa countries (Togo, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Niger, Senegal, Gambia & Burkina Faso). We have recently launched an entirely new business unit that we are very thrilled about. Landtours has started a new Corporate Event Management unit. We have been handling corporate events and conferences for quite some time; however we are now dedicating an entire unit to our M.I.C.E (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, Events/Exhibitions) requests and expanding our offering considerably. Ghana is becoming an increasingly popular business and tourist destination each day.
