There is something deeply tragic in there being the concept of multiverses in comics while also having fixed points in time across the timelines. Uncle Ben always dies. There is never a Harvey Dent who doesn't become Two-Face. For there to be a Superman, Krypton must burn. There can be endless and infinite permutations of all of the characters and the stories, and yet some things are still inevitable and inescapable and must be the same throughout all of them. As real as inertia, the story has a force that will propel some characters to their doom and others on their rise, and the fixedness of that inevitability is a deep, deep well of tragedy when examined through the question of "who can be saved, and who is already doomed?"
