It’s Intersex Awareness Day (10/26) so I want to talk about an idea that I had that I think a lot of people would think is interesting. I am an intersex man and part of what I do is intersex education and helping others identify possible intersex variations and know when it’s coded/a possibility in media, and I believe that this helps intersex visibility. So, without further ado:
I have a headcanon/belief that Waver Velvet is intersex based on the development of his body and how I perceive his experiences with gender.
Firstly, being intersex is about the body. Waver had a *very* late finish of puberty, with his development being stalled up until he was about 19-20. There could be multiple reasons for this.
Malnutrition is one of them, and we know Waver definitely struggled with finances prior to this due to his parents’ passing and lack of generational wealth setting him apart from other mages. However, I would believe that he did start eating well with the McKenzies, so after a while it becomes kind of a stretch to say he was suffering from outright malnutrition given he doesn’t really show many of the physical signs of it.
The other reasons for delayed puberty is chronic disease, and while we know Waver is chronically ill with stomach issues, it doesn’t seem to present as severe enough to cause unfinished puberty up till age 19. Other chronic disease issues might be pituitary tumors or other pituitary problems but those come with such a slew of other issues that it’s not likely Waver has them given the information we have i.e. we know Waver is chronically ill, but not in a way that can reasonably be tied to why he isn’t developing.
So that leaves congenital/genetic reasons, mostly things relating to… gonadal failure. I want to here take in the point that Waver is canonically androgynous as well, so while I’m not going to make any specific judgments on what his like, nads may or may not look like (IN GENERAL: it’s not good practice to speculate on an intersex person’s specific genital makeup, dyadic ppl I need you to really understand this) I believe that he has mixed gonadal dysgenesis.
Mixed Gonadal Dysgenesis (MGD) or (45,X/46,XY mosaicism) is a variation in which the sexual development of a person may be widely varied. A person with MGD may even appear as phenotypically normal for their determined sex. Mixed Gonadal Dysgenesis is one of the reasons why people may have delayed puberties and also lack of height growth, as well as physically androgynous bodies. The most common presentation of MGD are people who are phenotypically male, with the next most-common one being those with genital ambiguity (but again we won’t go into speculating on this for him). Diagnosis of MGD usually depends on the manifestation of the variation, but it’s not uncommon for patients to be diagnosed later in life due to short stature, delayed puberty, or a combination of both.
I think this is the best fit because it would explain why he has an androgynous (and also short) body but later grows up to be more masculine, including a growth spurt and deeper voice.
Personally, in my headcanon, I believe that after living with the McKenzies that Glen realized that Waver was 19 years old and still not fully developed & they sent him to go see a doctor, and the doctor did some testing and then prescribed him testosterone. Testosterone replacement therapy to jumpstart puberty development is a common treatment for intersex people.
Waver being on T shots to treat his intersex variation would explain also why he had a growth spurt and grew another foot, as testosterone alone doesn’t increase your height or the size of your hands/feet. I do believe that it is an issue with his pubertal development due to being intersex.
The other thing about Waver being intersex that I have a personal interpretation with is his gender experience. Waver isn’t very happy being treated like a girl and seems to be agonized whenever he is mistaken as one, frequently trying to convince others that he’s not and reinforce the idea that he couldn’t possibly be mistaken as a girl. Being constantly misgendered is a common intersex experience, as well as struggling with others’ perceptions of your gender. Waver seems to be pushed away/rejected from the concept of manhood and forced into this box of ‘girl’ by his peers. I think this causes him a lot of pain, especially before his growth started again.
Despite that, he still retains some feminine aspects as he gets older, seemingly having made peace with it or chosing to consider them personal aspects of himself rather as things that signify that he’s “actually a girl” or anything like that. It seems like he has a nice balance of both masculine and feminine traits into one whole. Asides from that being sometimes related to an intersex gender experience in which someone feels like they also have a balance of male/female traits, I think that his gender expression is also tied in with certain aspects that also go back to the experience of being intersex.
So also in Fate/Zero Waver denotes himself as an alchemist (with confidence I should add). In alchemy, there is a concept known as the Rebis, the end result of the process of Magnum Opus (“Great Work”) to create the philosopher’s stone. It is the goal that all alchemists strive towards (possibly the pathway that alchemists seek the Root). The Rebis is the divine hermaphrodite. It is the perfect balance of male/female, dark/light, venus/mercury, sun/moon, etc. It is the unification of this duality. There is no possible way that Waver isn’t knowledgable about this given that he has to use these concepts to understand the formula that is used to create the Princesses of Silver & Gold in Case Files volume 3. This is a fundamental of alchemy.
Because of this, I believe that Waver’s continued androgyny is intentional, and linked to his practice of magecraft, but also is a part of his gender expression. While I’m sure being called a ‘girl’ may still feel insulting due to the pain of his past, it’s possible he doesn’t hate being referred to with feminine terms, as it reinforces his Hermetic androgyny.
If we go even further, Waver does have a running narrative motif of “balancing”. He balances being a mage and a human, even if it causes him pain of not being able to be fully either. The idea of “not being able to be fully either” is a common experience amongst intersex people who find that they can not be fully men or fully women, and I believe that here it extends into Waver’s gender experiences. I believe that Waver has a complex relationship with gender, complex feelings about manhood and womanhood as ideas, and where he stands is between them, living within the grey area and vagueness of it, balancing it as he balances everything else. I believe he has an intergender intersex experience, but chooses mainly to identify himself as a man in everyday life.
There are quite a few other characters that I believe have intersex narratives hinted at, but to me, Waver is a very obviously intersex character. I hope this writeup was able to help educate and illuminate the things that make him stand out to me in this way, and how certain aspects of his narrative can hint to an intersex variation.
And most importantly, many characters could possibly be intersex. It’s important to remember there is no one intersex experience, only common threads of experiences.
