Contender to be one of the best anecdote ever said
fascinated by jeff the killer tbh. everyone in that creepypasta has generic white usamerican names (jeff, keith, barbara, billy, etc.) except for jeff the killer's doe eyed little brother liu. why is he liu. is liu chinese? it's okay if he's chinese. is jeff also chinese? has jeff the killer been chinese this whole time? am I a bad person?
skybox is funny to me because the backstory for his association with rhodes island is that he was the grunt that brought doctor meals back when doctor was in prison in columbia and he liked doctor so much that he was like i Have to suck up to this one, they're gonna be the contact that lets me make it big someday, and then through a long series of coincidences he ended up being right about that, so yeah he's a rotten corrupt government official, but he's in rhodes island's pocket and abusing his authority to get oripathy meds into columbia, so,
there’s a funny dichotomy in how people talk about art online, about its unique capacity to be revolutionary + change the minds of whole societies, and also how it is uniquely vulnerable to the evils of technology and will be wiped off the face of the earth by pre-mixed paints photography photoshop AI. In either case it expresses a hilarious view of artists as the centre of the universe, a higher class of human being who have a special connection to the capital-H Human Spirit. art is somehow both impossibly durable and impossibly brittle, depending on the argument, and sometimes you can watch people argue for both positions simultaneously within the same sentence
the nice thing about dynasty being a walled lily garden is that there's quality control. not everything on dynasty is perfect, but it needs to pass a quality threshold to get by, which cuts out the chaff that otherwise plagues manga websites
made this into a gif bc i liked it so much. shark Denied

every spellcheck algorithm when you type a non-english name: uh oh! that's a typo! let me go ahead and fix that for you
does anyone else remember when google's facial recognition algorithm tagged a photo of black people as gorillas? racism is so often built into the technology we use every day and it's absolutely disgusting. and it doesn't have to be this way! it would be so easily avoidable! but the tech industry doesn't care. the tools built by the tech industry reflect all of the biases of the people who develop them, and they are most often built by people who don't consider non-white people with non-english names important enough to spend any additional development time to account for them
and y'know on top of that, these decisions reflect US cultural hegemony! just earlier, I tried implementing spellchecking in my program, and no matter what I tried, I could not get it to stop flagging the vast majority of non-english names as "errors". here's the readme for the library I tried to use:
it makes such a big deal about how inclusive they want this list to be. so, where did they get the majority of these names?
US census data
the tech industry by and large does not consider anyone living outside of the united states to be people. I even checked, and the difference between the final list and the file us-census.txt is only a few hundred names. and sure, this is just one spelling library, but it's one with over a million weekly downloads on npm and over 27,000 dependents on github. I guarantee that several of the websites and programs you use every day depend on this library for spellchecking, and whoever wrote this library decided that a list of names of people living in the united states is "good enough". it's maddening!
Sorry to post shit I found on reddit but this video has been on my mind for like 3 weeks now
