A Clockwork Orange has given me a new perspective on classical music. Of all the research I've done for this book, one of the things that I have come to appreciate most is how Burgess incorporates music into this novel. I had always appreciated it and admired it, but Burgess used classical music throughout this novel in a way I had never seen before. He used classical music as inspiration for not only themes and characterization, but even for the way he formatted the novel into three parts. The poetic and intricate phrasing of the characters are odes to classical music. The way Alex connects music to his love for violence is so freaking interesting. The way Burgess manipulates music into Alex's only true sign of individuality is just so different. Burgess turned the aspects of music into so many different literary tools I can't even wrap my brain around it.
