Changing a canon character’s history to suit your needs whatever they are feels like a disservice to those who created the character’s story. How about instead you simply say your character has changed, but still retains their history as written. Example don’t say your character has always been something when obviously in canon they’re not, instead try going with someone or a situation made them open to a new idea and because of that they changed, which also counts as character growth too.
I’ve always considered these to be AU’s of characters. Everyone has a right to play out a character in any way they choose, be it you personally like it or not. And if it bothers you (general you) that much then easy thing to do is just not interact with them.

Sam Winchester
Character on the CW show Supernatural. Played by Jared Padalecki. Son of Mary and John Winchester, younger brother of Dean Winchester. His mother was murdered by a demon when he was six months old and is father trained him and his brother Dean to become a hunter of all things Supernatural. He has certain abilities because of the demon that murdered Mary. He gets visions of things that will happen in the future, and rarely has used telekinesis.
Okay I know it said for only the first entry but omg this next one has me laughing my ass off!
1. A lead character from the hit CW show "Supernatural". Sam Winchester is the younger brother of Dean Winchester, another main character. Both are monster/demon hunters that travel around the country saving lives and ridding the world of ghosts, werewolves, shapeshifters, demons, etc. 2. A moose.

Gabriel popped in to hug Sam tightly. "Sambo! It's your birthday!"
Sam startles at first, having not expected the action, let alone from Gabriel of all people. He had died the last he’d seen him after all. “Uh, thanks…” He says, cautiously hugging back. He had so many questions to ask…like the oh so obvious being alive one. “I am glad you’re alive but how?”
"No problem. We have more than enough bedrooms so go ahead and make yourself at home." Angels didn’t really need to sleep , which Sam was learning on a personal level all too well, but it would at least give Gabriel a place for privacy if he needed it.
Gabriel smiled and nodded. He walked inside, taking in the place as he walked down the stairs. “So how’d you guys manage to get this place?”
"It’s kind of a long story but short hand version, we got it through our grandfather." Sam explained as he followed Gabriel down the stairs.

Gabriel frowned, looking between him and his chart. Shaking his head, he sighed. “No, give me a minute. I need to talk to someone. Stay here.” Gabriel walked out and waved over his supervisor. “The kid thinks he’s 31. What do you want me to do? ” he asked quietly.
Sam huffed a sigh of frustration while rolling his eyes. If he didn’t get his things anytime soon he’d have to sneak out to use a phone when nobody was looking. And that could prove to be tricky considering hospitals tended to be quite busy.
Gabriel walked back into the room, a fake smile on his face. “One of the nurses is bringing your phone so you can call your brother, but you’re pretty messed up and we can’t let you leave for at least another day.That okay?”
Sam nodded in understanding, a little bit more at ease now with the news of getting his phone back. "Not like I really have anywhere to go." He couldn't wait to finally get ahold of his brother and get the hell out of this place though.

Sam had shifted in his seat, feeling a bit uncomfortable at the other man trying to get a good look at him. And no matter what Dean said, he couldn’t help wondering about what had been said by the cashier.
"Wh..what did he mean back there?"
"Hmm?" Dean raised his brows. "Oh, him. Told you, it was just crazy talk." Dean wasn’t about to saying anything more on the subject, at least to Sam. He’d trusted Dean enough to leave his house with him, so hopefully the idiot cashier hadn’t made him wary.
As he drove, he rummaged through the paper bag, grabbing a couple fries. Popping one into his mouth, he offered one to Sam. ”Eat ‘em while they’re hot,” he suggested.
It was a short drive to his place. It was a town house with a neighbor only on one side. His was the corner unit. Opening the garage with the remote, he pulled in. The door closed behind the.
Climbing out, he took the paper bag with him and motioned for Sam to follow him. They went through the door, and up a set of stairs, past the small laundry room, and found themselves in his living room. There was an open kitchen, and another set of stairs that lead to the upstairs bedrooms.
"You can put your stuff there," he said nodding to a spot next to the stairs as he walked to the dining table and put their food down. "Let’s eat."
"Oh, okay.." Came the quiet reply, the Omega dropping the subject. Sam had learned a while ago not to ask the same thing twice. Once an Alpha responded to your question, even if it wasn't the answer you were looking for, that was that.
When Sam bit into the offered fry, the salty flavor melted into his mouth. He had to keep from moaning in delight. However, keeping his hand from digging in the bag for more wasn't an option.
After following Dean inside his place, Sam was hesitant to let go of his backpack but after a long moment he reluctantly set it beside the stairs then met Dean in the kitchen. He stood there, unsure of what exactly he should do.
