probably my biggest gripe about MHA is that there isn’t a whole lot of relationship building between the characters which tbh can be perfectly fine but I feel like it just serves to undercut the emotional impact of certain moments in MHA. Like, a great example is Midoriya and Aoyama. Sure they have some interactions but from what we see they’re barely friends. This is a wild fumble on Horikoshi’s part honestly, as having them have a deep connection could’ve made the reveal that Aoyama is the UA traitor so much more devastating for both the audience and Midoriya. But nope! Aoyama just kind of stays some side character for the whole series and gets only sparse characterization. He’s described as a narcissist (which, btw, icks me out because of the ableist implication of it. Also, Bakugo is described as egotistical but for some reason Aoyama is different??? Confusing) but we don’t really see him do anything “narcissistic”. There’s lots of other stuff I could talk about but yeah it feels like Horikoshi was too focused on the plot to care about the relationships between these characters.
