Slightly belated, we present for you our September LARC meeting. The theme was Memories. Tanya hosted, with the evening kicked off with some pizza, salad with peaches, toasted chickpeas, and icy limoncello to get us started.
Jenny: The Mauresque - a classic cocktail inspired by a recent trip to Paris. Need we say more?
Pastis, Orgeat, sparkling water
Carla: A Peach Shim - a delicious cocktail recalling a very fun visit to Toronto, a drink from the team at Civil Liberties
Vermouth, Creme de Peche, lemon, simple syrup, bitters
Mace: The Earthquake - “On October 17th, 1989, I was standing a few doors down from the house of one of my best friends. I was straddling my bike, and she was straddling my front tire facing me, and we were talking, probably about boys, and slowly walking down the street. It was just after five, and suddenly we found ourselves lying on the ground, legs tangled in bike chains. The Loma Prieta quake was 6.9, and we were less than 30 miles from the epicenter. My clearest memory was that we had to scramble back on our feet, as a tiny tsunami was rolling down the driveway, from the pool behind the house were stood in front of.”
Gin, Whiskey and Absinthe. All from distillers from within 50 miles of San Francisco. Much like the earthquake, the drink is “short and slightly unpleasant.”
Tanya: Grandma’s Orchard (with an accompanying photo!) - a cocktail inspired by childhood summer’s spent on grandma’s rural farm in Russia, picking berries from the bushes and grabbing sugary plums fallen from the tree. Grandpa used to distill his own moonshine (samogon, in Russian) from the plums as well.
Slivovitz, raspberry liqueur, lemon zest, Mediterranean tonic water
Sarah: Remembrance of Things Past - not so much inspired by a specific memory, but more by the notion of a memory. The cocktail recalls a madeleine dipped into mint tea. Yum!
Bergamot vodka, vanilla vodka, simple syrup, garnished with mint and lemon
Nomi: Autumn Flip - based on this recipe, but using rum instead of gin, the cocktail hopes to remind one or inspire of chilly fall mornings in Western
NY state. The frothy egg is a light dusting of snow, the buttermilk a
bitter chill, maple signifying the trees all around turning color.
Rum, buttermilk, whole egg, maple syrup
We’ll see you soon, as our October gathering is just around the corner!
