At the end I just felt like, holy shit! Really, anything in the Bible can be interpreted to fit your narrative. To fit your own will.

Or was this more of an attack on Cults? Or.....was the point to show that all organized religion IS a cult?....so many thoughts going through my head.

I think to see it as anti-religion/anti-religious people isn’t doing justice to characters like Hassan, Erin and Mildred. They were all very devoted to their beliefs— whether Islam or Christianity, lifelong or newly-recommitted. But they were never so hoodwinked by the “miracles of God” that they blindly followed what was clearly something wrong. Devout Catholic Mildred went to one (1) sermon and knew that those were not the words of God. Most of the heroes and protagonists were religious to various degrees; even the ones who were hoodwinked but came to their senses and never succumbed too far (Leeza, the Flynns, and so on).

Flanagan did a great job, imo, of being respectful of religious people while being critical of indoctrination. Blindly devoting yourself to anything, whether it’s religion or alcohol, etc., will give you blinders in return and destroy you in the end. So, I think that was one of the messages Flanagan put in there. One of many, because there were A LOT.

Annie Flynn, mentions that John Pruitt has been on Crockett Island his whole life, which suggests that John was born on the island, and that he knew Mildred ever since they were kids.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, too!

And about how he would’ve been the one who officiated Mildred and George’s wedding.

And about how we didn’t see anyone else on the island as old as Mildred and John. So, they were probably the last two of the people they grew up with left, which did a number on someone as traumatized by death as John.

Ah, there’s so much material for their history 😭
