Is it you are the love of my life or you were the love my life??
i answered the same question earlier, but i'm gonna expand a bit now. i think it's essentially "you're" pronounced like you-er which can make it sound like "were", but i think it makes much more sense in the context of the song that it is "are"/"you're" since otherwise the next line (and the rest of the song, for that matter) doesn't make much sense. it goes "baby, you're the love of my life/maybe you don't know it's lost till you find it". if it was a situation of someone in the past who was the love of their life but they're currently not together, the second line doesn't make much sense- harry is talking about FINDING something not losing something in that second line, implying he currently is with that person.
the rest of the song also sounds very much like it’s about a couple that is currently together, just separated by distance occasionally. "take a walk on sunday through the afternoon/we can always find something for us to do/we don’t really like what’s on the news, but it’s on all the time" as well as “won’t pretend that i’ve been doing everything i can to get to know your creases and your ends/they’re the same” all implies a comfortable togetherness and not something in the past. anything about distance in the song and "going away" reads very much like just being in long distance situations and not a break up, for example "take you with me every time i go away"/"it’s not what I wanted to leave you behind/don’t know where you land when you fly"/"it’s unfortunate, just coordinates", which all very much leans towards a current couple who has to deal with each other having to travel a lot and being separated a lot.
so essentially, although i understand why some people hear “were” based on the way he pronounces it, using “were” does not make much sense in the entire context of the song, which very much sounds like a couple who is currently together.
