sorry about the ABSOLUTE essay this about to be, but:

i’ve been a fan since 2012, and what today’s fans can’t understand is how much modest’s marketing still effects us. all things considered, harry and louis had quite similar backgrounds, but their teams needed archetypes to sell. louis became the plucky unique-sounding underdog in a rags to riches story, who came from an unstable home life and made it big. harry they wanted as their star, so they pushed the image of a quiet nuclear family, elegant coparenting, and a normal small town upbringing (of course, making him too posh would grate on people.) louis was characterized as loud, sassy, a jokester, and harry was characterized as mature, charming, well raised. (aside from the sex demon image, but hey! easier to sell than a gay boyband frontman.)

and god, did that marketing work. fans didn’t know anne had a husband between des and robin for YEARS. the years harry spent living over a bar, erased. jay being able to successfully support 5 kids? brushed aside. but fans were young, we didn’t see everything going on, just the images built for them. they were so ingrained, and hit us young, and now they’ve carried over. the image that served harry well in 1D has now been turned against him, and fans have the impression he’s just another rich white guy who was handed everything. louis’ has built him a sturdy fanbase who love rooting for the underdog, and dismiss anything that remind them he’s also rich and white and sometimes a little out of touch.

I don’t really have a conclusion. we haven’t really gone anywhere since then. but I think it’s important to not just acknowledge the disparity in how harry and louis are treated, and examine why that is.

Fucking THANK YOU for bringing that up. Yes, yes, yes. So many newer fans have no idea and even those of us who’ve been here for a while easily forget all those details. PR and marketing is a huge industry and they fabricated images for these boys from very early on and HL (and the others) are still living with those images, as much as they may have been tweaked and added to.
