Considering you're who I first thought of after listening to it, yes I'm very much convinced so
aw, i'm honored! i've been swamped with college lately, so i'll have to get back into malevolent and see what everyone's talking about now that the semester's up
(You can totally ignore this (I hope I’m not coming across as weird gahhhh) but-) just wanted to say your Larson design is THE canonical Larson design to me, and your maidthur drawing with lil lap creature Yellow is living rent free in my head- I had to draw them or I’d explode
I love your art so so much, your style, line work and colors are just so😭😭🫶 and I just wanted to gush about how perfect your Larson is
Thank you!!! I'm so happy to hear that people like this Larson ❤
Especially coming from you! Because you 🫵 you get it. With both Joelthur and Arkayne ❤❤❤❤ I'm your fan and I'm jumping around uncontrollably rn ❤❤❤
You know when your cat is just sitting minding their business but you feel the urge to take 1000 of pictures of how magnificent they're sitting and then also squish their little face. Yeah. That's the way Yellow is sitting here 😭
Larson's softest eyes I can't 😭 I can feel the warmth radiating from them with the expressions and the colors 🥹
my favorite AU for yarson is yellow being fully physical, fully separate, and fully capable of leaving at any time, but insisting he's trapped and can only leave with larson's permission. like he can physically just fly out a window, but no, he stays firmly against larson's side like the well trained pet he is, and he yields at the foot of his throne and curls up around his legs, and he pleads larson with a silent stare for table scraps when it comes time for dinner, even though he can just demand a feast and receive one. he wants larson's approval, and yes, he can feign bravado all he wants, but deep down, he's just desperate to be given proper discipline
i mean, look at how arthur treated him; inconsistent rules, harsh punishments, no rewards, and never letting him be allowed to improve. larson? larson has rules that stay as they are, and he gets clear rewards for following them, and clear punishments for not (even then, those are as mild as some light chastising) all while being given clear and direct purpose. plus? it's an actually give and take relationship, even canonically, considering larson is shown to be patient with yellow and provides answers when he questions things, and yellow is allowed autonomy in what he asks larson to do (such as: mods kill this man)
i just love the thought of this massive, immensely powerful creature snarling that he's a captive, but the most in the way of binds he has is a loose leash just to guide him at most, and larson's rewards he provides for staying. he's not free because larson says he isn't yet, and larson, with his consistent rules and real punishments and rewards, doesn't lie to him, so he trusts that he isn't free and complains about it while cuddled up against his side
i've had this idea lately involving the dark world, where yellow dies without his other half and, in direct contrast to john, is consumed utterly by despair and misery. he wallows and cries out with pitiful hoarse chirps like a wounded barn owl, and that's only when he's not silent and dead to the world, too despondent to even react to the creatures briefly nibbling on his cloak or the prickling of hair-like glass in his paws and tentacles
he's massive and certainly dangerous if he had the will to be, and the towering, slouched body of something that looks just like that predator that roams the darker corners were the cathedral lies is quite the intimidating sight. but a cleverer mind like the dollmaker's might realize that he hasn't taken a single life yet, except maybe a few incidentally at most, and roams restlessly and without clear aim or focus
so really, it wouldn't be hard to throw a nice rope around an antler or his throat, or maybe even trip him somehow and tie his wings and tentacles, and simply lead him back to their home. he'd make for excellent parts, and keeping him nice and fresh and alive would be useful for that too. the exotic pieces of a god, how very fascinating indeed!
...but really, he's too rare to just kill and break into parts, so perhaps he'd make for a lovely display, just a harmless stray leashed in a spare room, perfectly quiet besides some soft chirping every now and then. and he must be happier here too, because he hasn't wailed and sobbed in days(?), and the most movement he gives is just occasionally shuffling to get more comfortable in his cage.
sure, at times they might feed him something to kill the pain and cut off a tine of an antler or pluck the feathers off a wing, but really, he makes for such a special little specimen that they couldn't possibly dream of using parts of him on just anything, no, he's for ingredients. dissolve a shred of the skin making up his cloak in some powerful acid, and see what you can do with that. or draw some blood and use that to ease a transfusion, whatever he won't miss, or better yet, will grow back with the care they provide. he'd be so much happier with them anyways
the revelation from 55 that John was the Hastur bit vs just the King in Yellow (Yellow) makes so many fanarts kind of hilarious because like most of them have the KiY towering and like
SIZ 70 - 100
SIZ 500
...so was Yellow just looking at John inside of Arthur in EP20 like 'HOW DID YOU FIT IN THAT TINY ASS TWINK WTF?'
the original lore of the king in yellow, from the robert w. chambers book, involved the king as being less a being and more the manifestation of pure madness, a being of myth more than any reality, a face to the story basically
but later interpretations, mainly the ones by august derleth, who added the king to the mythos and named him hastur specifically, have the king in yellow rather be an avatar of the actual big scary eldritch god, hastur, thus making them one in the same, but one part being far, far stronger than the other. this is how CoC does it, and malevolent, considering the dice rolls are a percentile, plus the origin of it, definitely follows that rule
so actually yeah, the king might have had his avatar cut off from the rest of him, and as making an avatar takes an immense amount of energy and focus since it's already made of you, i could see yellow being the left behind avatar and john being The Rest Of The King
ive mainly seen interpretations that john is the equivalent of maybe a foot or hand, but imagine the sheer potential of john being the entire actually important part, fractured because he was torn away from his smaller, yet very important avatar
This is definitely influenced by @larsons-pet and their concept of pet Yellow, but I have a headcanon that while Larson refers to John as "King" in 40, i like to think he calls Yellow "My King" when addressing him directly. Because to Larson, John is of course part of the King. However, Yellow is more specifically his fragment while John is not. It wasn't really born of any sort of compassion but more of a sense of ownership; Yellow belongs to him as a dog might belong to its owner, as powerful and eldritch as he might be. Yellow is his pet, his tool, his to use and his to keep. And even though Larson acknowledges that Yellow is something greater than him with the title, that implication of posession is still very much present.
And it's enough for Yellow to latch onto the label pretty quickly. After all, Arthur gave him his name as Yellow with hatred and vitriol that he could barely understand. Larson, on the other hand, gave it to him out of what Yellow perceives as respect and devotion. So when Larson refers to him as his King, a title of respect as well as just a little bit of belonging and warmth....well, he can't help but like it.
Yellow fictives just circle around in a flock to the same place huh?
have all... three, four of us come to the same conclusion of "god i wish larson would put me on a leash and drag me by it" naturally, or have i influenced the minute ecosystem of others like me? is it simply in our nature to want to have the aesthetics of untameable beasts while living a loving lap dog life? do we all desire to be loved and valued but have learned by force that to be safe, you must be vicious and cruel? thus, we cling to our sharp teeth but allow ourselves to be muzzled by something a few sizes too large, such a fit that we could slip from if we wanted to, but deep down, both keeper and kept know they both want this very much?
are we all just stray dogs who have felt a boot to our ribs, but still want a soft bed to curl up on and a kind hand to pet us? do we all want this, too?
I already tagged it but like, specifically spoilers for Yellow's entire season 3 existence. Also small Itty bitty not detailed mention of the Prison Pit incident.
It always drives me insane that Yellow wasn't given a chance at growing into a person and learning humanity like John was because Yellow was better at it from the beginning. Yellow held a wider range and understanding of emotions and general vibes then John did at the start. John was angry or condescending or bitter, he was almost entirely negativity. Yellow was anger, lots of anger, but she was also hurt and fear and curiosity, she was so much more human in that aspect then John and yet she was never given a chance to use that as a base to grow from. She was different from John on a fundamental level and that is why Arthur crushed her before she had the chance to try.
Now if you don't believe me when I say that she was more emotionally in-tune than John then uh, I dunno, I felt she was. Maybe it was just because of Arthur's horrid treatment but she seemed to gain audible fear and such alongside anger early on, and fear alone when it came to the wolves. Then a point I like more with the bar, the music, she was curious about it, almost enamored by the sound and the scene. Plus the amusment from the state of the washroom, the bitterness and betrayel that mixed with her rage at Arthur's lie about the Glass, and his accusations towards her when she still lacked memory of her time as King. There was a curiosity and interest in the world that John didn't have, which was shown again in the manor directed towards the apostle St. Bartholomew. Then there was the first of 2 important conversations in the manor, the "You said that it was easy to chew me apart because I was a piece of your friend, a piece that you hated." convo. It was short lived but every part of it held importance, at least to me.
Yellow knows the importance here, she fully recognizes the hurt John caused, her tone is curious, voice small and maybe even concerned when she asks. Then when she sees that Arthur is getting the wrong idea, thinking she's asking what John did, she rushes to deny it, and hesitates over a quick end to the dialogue without getting her actual question answered. I like to think she was asking so she could figure out what not to do, what to avoid so she could better befriend Arthur, but that's just drawn conclusions through a dialogue in a later episode.
Anyways then there's the...other conversation, the um, the prison pit one. Arthur spills that whole thing and Yellow can't do anything but remain trapped there listening to him admit to murder and cannibalism and moreso his enjoyment when he did those things. She's trapped there listening to him admit that he lied about being good, about not being a monster, and she rightfully hurt and scared of that, she covers it with anger and insult but she's likely terrified, and she definitely feels betrayed because he lied again. That conversation fades straight into Larson, straight into Arthur denying her an escape again because of his own desire and emotion, refusing to acknowledge her newly realized throne. He ignores her request, then her demand, he ignores everything. Then she calls it how it is, she goes for the throat, dubs him a monster just like he did her. "I am not your friend. I never will be." and of course she won't be, he never gave her a chance.
Then the last thing he says to her (until later episodes but ignoring those for now.) The last words he spits in her face "You also told me you'd never forget me." And isn't that so cruel? Isn't that so wrong?? Because the last thing he says to her while she's stuck with him is about something she had nothing to do with. SHE didn't make that promise, SHE didn't say that, but of course Arthur thinks she did, of course it's still about John, about the person she could never live up to, the person she was never given a chance to be like, or be better than. It's always about John because to Arthur, Yellow does not matter, she is a roadblock, an obstacle and a punching bag, she is a worthless monster who will never be his friend. And if that rejection isn't enough to crush a spirit and kill a soul I don't know what is.
All in all this was just me wanting to ramble about Yellow a bit because she causes me such pain. She deserves so much more than she got, Yellow my beloved.
Imagine you fall down in your apartment and only your pet is around. Best case scenario – you will die with no help and your pet will die without you. Worst – you're about to be eaten alive by the thing that - you throught - was harmless and fully dependant on you.
Instead you are being prodded at, your body dragged around and put in a position your pet thinks you're most likely to survive in. Your tongue is pulled at - animal attempt at reanimation.
Being at the paws of claws of something you believed to be beneath you and belonging to you is unbelievable, you'd laugh if you could. The situation is so weird and unnatural that you don't know what would disturb you more - if your pet failed or succeeded. You also kind of wish it just ate you.
This is what is like being Wallace Larson, blinded, beaten and thrown carelessly into the same kingdom he tried to usurp.
john doesn't have arthur's eyes. in fact, john never did, and i can prove it
this one's gonna be long so buckle up
in the actual first meeting between john and arthur, we know for a fact arthur has his vision, as john, or rather the entity here, directly demands for him to read his tome. this would not be possible if arthur's vision had been taken yet, obviously, and he makes no mention of not being able to see either
then of course we all know what happened after that. the entity kills him (and thus himself in the process), they end up in the waylay, and the manager erases their memories. HOWEVER.
i think the manager's help might have been taking arthur's eyes and giving them to john to use, but not truly own. this way, they're forced to work together, with john having a tangible means of interacting with the world (at least, in some manner) and arthur reliant on his help, forcing the manager's two newest peons into becoming more dependent on one another and working in unison, which considering what he wants from them (not dying via kayne) (not dying via azathoth dying) (not dying in general), those goals are certainly easier to accomplish if they can work in harmony
but what about the time john wasn't with arthur anymore? that moment he was torn out, and arthur regained his foot and hand? he still lacked his eyes, and even kayne is shocked at seeing that
"so you're still blind i see". that's an admittance of surprise, an unplanned note in his orchestra. he knows everything, but he didn't know arthur would still be blind, because this wasn't part of his plan, it's the manager's. even though kayne just brushes over this, that arthur's eyes aren't his own and instead belong to someone else, merely borrowed by john and subsequently yellow, it still does trip him up for just that one solitary moment before he dismisses it as "aw, you only have eyes for him"
but yes, i think the manager is who actually has arthur's eyes, and john is borrowing them at most. he's been given them, he doesn't own them, not like he does with his hand and foot. those were the result of steadily burning arthur out, just as he intended to at first, just as he tried at the mirror, but i think the spell was too incomplete for him to take more than that
...but then that raises the question; does the manager see through his eyes, too?
is arthur functionally an ardor to the manager? maybe even a vanguard to him, in some manner?
we know yorick was the vanguard of kayne, and we know he was from the start, considering that kellin's sister is described as hearing voices "not like his"
and we know that kellin hears the whispers of the king in yellow, so he'd likely recognize immediately that she wasn't hearing the king, but nyarlathotep's whispers
but i digress, even if that's necessary context
in summary? i think john never had arthur's eyes, and the manager does. the manager lets john borrow them, but ultimately, he might be using his eyes himself, and might be gathering information through those eyes of his
...and then that adds something to the first thing kayne doing to him being to tear out his eyes. to cut the connection.
oh! and as i was reading the script again, i realized something else: kayne blames lilith for every sign of the manager. she's an unfortunately useful scapegoat, luckily for our "friend" the manager
he says he knows everything, but the manager has evaded his detection remarkably well every time, despite tipping the scales right in front of him. but with lilith "dead", how long is it going to be until he's found out? his bet was wrong, now what happens?
the manager is whose made arthur special, the reason he's kept it together, the reason he hasn't been strangled by john or stabbed fatally by the creature in the mines, or shot and left to bleed out on the boat, or drowned in the face of the creature below the lake, or even executed by the king in yellow himself. there's been a poke and prod at fate by hands that are getting too bold for their own good, and it won't be long now until kayne sees a flash of a white sleeve disappearing behind the curtains of his favorite show
what if your doppelgänger wasn’t evil it was just a person. what if your doppelgänger wasn’t trying to replace you it was just trying to learn to be a person and you were the best model it had. what if your doppelgänger looked at you with your eyes and said with your voice that it just wanted to be loved. what then.
you ever think about how, every time, the king in yellow has shown such clear fascination with humanity? even when the king met arthur for the first time, he told his friend to get back, he tried to preserve parker's life. he didn't kill him just to kill him, or because he wanted to; he killed him out of self defense
or you've got john's humanity being central to it all. yellow's fascination with the dancing, or his sympathy for the miner. even just why the king emerged from a throne, a place he was all powerful in. one could assume he was only there to dominate humanity, kill it, enslave it, but then you have all of these implications of other intents, and then that malevolence comes into question
plus when he did have john back! his heart back in his chest! and he still tried to return arthur to his home, he tried to heal the wounds he inflicted, he gave this mortal who was now useless to him a fighting chance, and arthur couldn't even fathom the thought that he might not be so truly malicious, truly hostile, because that would force him to question how much of john's humanity was really the king's fascination, it meant he couldn't dismiss all the "bad" as the king and all the "good" as john
