PHANTOM BODIES Neutral Setting Documentation + Reflection
Get a Grip Folding chair, permanent marker, rubber gloves, and chicken wire approx. 33 in. x 24 in. x 18 in.
After realizing I would be unable to create my original idea for various reasons, that idea being a sculpture which I planned to title "Armchair", I tried to pivot and create something somewhat similar. I refer to this work as the bastard child of "Armchair", this being because it no longer has the arms I meant to wrap around whoever sat in it. As a result the work needed a new name, I went with "Get a Grip" as to keep some sort of hand pun in the name & as a message to myself in reference to my failures with this project. (with the title being written under the chair as to not forget).
The "bounciness" of the arms was not intentional as I wanted them to grip around the body of whoever is sitting, although I think it works for this version of the project.
Since I was unable to realize so many factors of the original project, I chose to draw the 3 hands on the back and bottom of the chair. I wanted at least one piece of this work to have something I could be happy with, and I'm satisfied with how they came out.
I'd still probably return to this idea with the "Armchair" concept, more arms, properly cast them, perhaps a completely custom chair. But for that I'll have to "Get a Grip"

Rattrap wood, paint, and various tubes of varying origin approx. 48 in. x 24 in. x 8 in.
This was a lot of fun to make, figuring out how to make the "hammer" be able to hinge back and forth was interesting, I wasn't sure I would be able to do it but in the end I think that aspect brings the whole thing together (In a perfect world, it actually snaps but I'm happy with it).
During critique someone pointed out that there was bit of red on it, mimicking that this trap may have already been used. This was completely unintentional, the pieces I used to affix the "holding bar' to the trap's main body were originally red. I painted them silver to blend in but when it came time to drill them together, I scratched some paint off, thus red scratch marks. I really loved hearing that response because I would never see something like that in that way considering that through my eyes that was only something that made the piece worse. Although similarly, the pool tube I used to represent the "spring" was quite a bit dirty. A deep cleaning didn't get everything off BUT the result was a gray tube with slight brown marks on it, sorta mimicking a bit of rust on a metal spring. That's all to say unintentional details are fun :)
Painting the rat fella onto it was probably my favorite part, I wish I had used red paint for that specifically but still, I'm super happy with how that came out as well as the piece overall.

Everyone's a critic.
BODILY STRUCTURES - Sketch 1
Sketch 1 is a human scale shield, if I researched properly I want to make a wankel shield (long rectangular shape with rounded bottom). Rebar outline makes us the main shield shape, with pieces in the middle to hold grip & strap. Grip could be made with small piece of rebar, strap could be a cut down belt. Fabric will go over the entire front, tightened to the shield's shape to create the facade of the front of the shield. Maybe painting a crest onto the fabric for its design.

Idea I went with, as well as the shift from gross realistic hand to cartoony gloved hand.
