WHAT THE FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS ON JUNE 24th!
Distilled to a seven hour marathon of short and feature film programming on Saturday, June 24th, Toronto film fans will have the opportunity to see a 20-years-in-the-making Japanese remake of THE EVIL DEAD (BLOODY MUSCLE BODY BUILDER IN HELL), a feature-length adaptation of a VINE channel that premiered at SXSW 2017 (SYLVIO), and a deranged Lynchian rom-com about an all-feline remake of Brian De Palma’s CARRIE (SHE’S ALLERGIC TO CATS). Strange and surreal short films from around the world will precede each of the features, the marathon will culminate with a post-fest party at The Monarch Tavern.

In 1975, cinematographer JEFF KREINES was hired to lens a little horror movie called THE DEMON LOVER (1977), and invited his partner JOEL DEMOTT to tag along and document the experience with her trusty 16mm camera. They expected a difficult shoot, beset with trials typical of low-budget film production, but what they got was a gonzo descent into filmmaking hell. Don't miss one of the rarest, but greatest making-of-a-movie documentaries of all time!

It is as vile as it is hilarious, as inept as it is outrageous. It is a film to be both enjoyed and endured. It is the nadir of cinema, but so below the bottom that it paradoxically flirts with the medium's very pinnacle. What begins as a traditional exploitation film revenge story, wherein a couple are brutally assaulted for inadvertently causing an accident that claims the life of a biker, escalates within the film's first 15 minutes into an all out war between a karate dojo and a Neo-Nazi motorcycle gang that culminates in castration and self-cannibalism. From there, our “protagonist” - a reprehensibly sleazy casanova and target for the biker gang's ire - quite literally attempts to depart his own movie by absconding to the country to make-out with a hitchhiker in a bathtub of piss-stained water. Alas, the MAD FOXES our hot on both his heels and the wheels of his super-cool sports car (that the producers were evidently adamant about insuring that it not get dented, scratched or remotely placed in significant danger). This nigh-picaresque plot is buoyed not by the cinematography (which is garish), nor exciting action (which is clumsily executed), but instead by the most delirious English language dub to have ever been recored. The dialogue is an outright cacophony of improvised mumbles and pithy non-sequiturs, and when coupled with the genuinely shocking bright-red violence it depicts throughout its narrative's rapid ascent into pure lunacy, the cinematic alchemy achieved is truly a wonder to simultaneously adore and abhor.

THE WHAT THE FILM FESTIVAL is a three-day showcase of best and strangest eccentric cinema of this year and yesteryear, hosted by THE LASER BLAST FILM SOCIETY. If it’s weird, we’ll show it. If you think it’s terrible, we’ll defend it. If you realize it’s genius, we’ll have told you so. But above all, we will always leave our audiences slack-jawed, on the precipice of paraphrasing our namesake: WTF?!!
