LIFE ON FILM
When you were a kid everything seemed more exciting. And I’m not just talking about the point in your life where bubbles seemed like magic, I’m talking the times that you can actually remember. The times that feel like they were just yesterday. Like the first pair of boobs you saw courtesy of a dirty magazine (god bless you Carmen Electra), or that first beer you shared amongst your friends courtesy of your dads not so well guarded cooler. Not to sound like an old dude on his way out or anything, but honestly those were the days.
There were so many unknown elements when you were a kid. You couldn’t just google something or Internet stalk your crush. You had to write notes and then get publicly shamed by your teacher for writing those notes. You had to actually be patient and put in some leg work. Instant gratification as we know it today was nonexistent.
But as technology changes so does life as we know it, and photography is a perfect example of that. Now by no means do I consider myself a photographer, at most I’m a happy hobbyist, but I did grow up with a great deal of appreciation for photography. I am someone who has trouble being present. I tend to always be thinking two steps ahead and I don’t allow myself to truly appreciate things as they are happening. So a photos ability to capture a moment has always provided me with a way of going back and taking things in.
In todays world where people snap endless photos until they get the perfect Instagram selife, myself included, photos rarely capture the emotion of a moment. There is always someone saying “no I don’t like how I look in that one, lets take another” and what was supposed to be an intimate photo of friends hanging out turns into a 10 minute photo shoot with everyone giving their best version of “blue steel”.
So as big of a fan as I am of looking at photos of beautifully retouched backsides, retouched or not Nicki Minaj is perfection, one can only take but so much. As of late I have found myself messing around with disposable film cameras. In part because of the mystery and imperfections that come along with it, you honestly never know what you have until its developed, but mainly because of the simplicity of it. With this anyone can be the photographer and more importantly anyone can capture a moment.
So I hope you enjoyed what I plan to be an on going series on this blog. This is my friends and I, unedited and unfiltered, doing what comes most natural to us: living life.
