Todays inspiration.
New episode of the Beats & Booze podcast is up as Oliver Heldens stops by the studio and talks with us about how it feels to pioneer a sound, Vegas vs. Ibiza, his track with Chocolate Pump, "Space Sheep," and how much money it would take to shave his beard … which is a touchy subject for us. We give our picks for our Top 5 DJ's for the year and also try to piece together the blackout of a night we had last weekend with DJ Anthony Ligotti on the phone to fill in the blanks. I think we're still hungover...

BEARD VS. LIFE: Never Settle!
In October of 2011 I quit what would be the last 9-5 job I would ever have. At the time I had just begun DJing and had nothing concrete to fall back on financially. I had no real industry connections and honestly not even much of a plan. I just knew I was tired of working a job that made me miserable and leading a life that I wasn’t in control of. Without a doubt it was the biggest risk of my life but it was something I knew I needed to do if I wanted to retain any sort of sanity.
Looking back almost 5 years later I can say with confidence that it was the greatest decision of my life. Doing this allowed me to completely engulf myself in my true passion and the one thing that has always consistently brought me happiness: music. Now by no means has this been an easy road, but for every hardship I can honestly say I’ve been repaid 10 fold with some amazing experiences.
I can’t put into words how amazing it is to wake up everyday and know that you’re going to be surrounded by something you truly love. And honestly that goes beyond just your job. This is my philosophy when it comes to the people I surround myself with. Whether it’s friends, business acquaintances or whom I choose to date; if a person or thing doesn’t add value and happiness to my life I don’t allow myself to get involved.
Life shouldn’t be about trying to do what’s expected of us, or about doing what we’re told we’re “supposed” to be doing. It should be about doing what makes us happy. It really is that simple. Life is too short to sit in traffic everyday on your way to job you hate, only to return to a home life your not so crazy about. We shouldn’t have to wake up depressed that it’s Monday or be counting down the days until Friday. There’s a huge world of opportunities out there and you should never settle for anything less than a life that makes you truly happy. We all deserve to wake up everyday surrounded by the people and things we love, genuinely excited about what life may throw our way next.
If you’re unhappy with an aspect of your life it’s never to too late to change it. We all deserve to live a happy and fulfilled life.

BEARD VS. MUSIC - “No Shave Forever” Mix
Yesterday my friends at SmashTheClub.com debuted my latest mixtape: “No Shave Forever”. I’ve been wanting to put something like this together for a while now and I’m glad I was able to take the time to sit down and make it. A lot of people may know me from the radio mixshows I do, or my Music Choice TV mixshow which airs on their Dance/EDM channel, and while I truly love being able to be a part of these; I sometimes feel like it may give people the wrong impression of me as a DJ.
I’m not someone who just enjoys playing just one style of music and anyone who has seen me live can attest to this. So I wanted to make a mix that I feel represents me as a DJ and can allow people to get a taste of what my club sets are like. This mix features 40+ songs mixed and curated by yours truly with throwbacks, current bangers and future hits of all genres.
Enjoy!

BEARD VS. MUSIC: Beats & Booze Podcast Episode 2 Ft. Tritonal
For those who don't know I recently started a podcast with a couple friends of mine, Flipz (iHeart Radio) and DJ Spirito (Robbins Entertainment), where we basically get drunk and interview some of the most recognizable names in dance music. The idea is to have a backstage green room type of atmosphere where nothing is off limits.
This weeks guest is none other than the fellas in Tritonal and we talk to them about touring on a bus, Chad’s exploding pants and crotch vodka.

BEARD VS. MUSIC: Dawn Golden - “All I Want” (Diplo Remix)
Its Monday so that means its time for some music. I first heard the original version of this song at some point last year and it was my go to track when I was feeling a little emo.
I then stumbled upon the Diplo remix on Spotify and its given me the best of both worlds. It takes me just deep enough down the woe is me rabbit hole and right before I’m about to hit rock bottom I’m brought back up with a dope Trap breakdown courtesy of Diplo.
Enjoy!

BEARD VS. MUSIC: Tory Lanez - “LA Confidential”
There’s honestly so much cool music out there these days. I think the Internet, and technology in general, have opened people up to experimentation and just the realization that everything doesn’t have to fit in some neat box. This track by Tory Lanez is a perfect example of that.
The other day while cyber stalking one of my favorite tattooed muses, Samii Ryan I see you, I heard this song playing in the background of one of her Snaps. The vibe immediately caught my attention and after a quick google search I discovered my latest musical obsession.
Co-written by Miguel and produced by the always amazing Cashmere Cat and Benny Blanco, the track is an awesome hybrid of sounds with vibes on top of vibes.
Check it out now and thank me later!

BEARD VS. LIFE: What is Hear The Beard?
When I started this whole “Hear The Beard” thing a year ago it was honestly nothing more than a just a catchy tagline for me to use; a way for me to brand myself using my most prominent and memorable physical feature. But as time has gone on it’s grown into something that, for myself at least, is far greater than that. It has given me a platform to not only express my mantra and life philosophy, but a way to give others what my beard has given me.
Now for those of you chuckling to yourself right now after you read that last line, yes I am very much aware of how ridiculous that sounds. On the surface my beard is nothing more than course, maybe even pubic looking hair, which grows on my face and makes eating an unnecessary challenge. And while I can’t deny that the current “beard craze” has garnered me some welcome attention from the opposite sex, that’s not what I mean when I talk about what my beard has given me. What I am talking about though is what my beard has come to represent for me in my life. In all honesty it’s not really about the beard at all. What its really about is how I have used my beard as a positive trigger for me in my life. Every time I look at it, it triggers a feeling of strength in me that reminds me to keep going after the things that make me happy. A feeling that has leant itself to allowing me to become comfortable with being myself.
When I first started growing out my beard 2 years ago there wasn’t quite the beard craze there is now. I can distinctly remember my friends making fun of it, girls telling me they wouldn’t sleep with me unless I shaved and the countless (and I mean countess) terrorist jokes made at my expense. But I stuck with it because it was something I wanted and now look: half of my friends have attempted to grow a beard themselves, I meet girls who are attracted to me mainly due to the fact that I have a beard and while I must admit the terrorist jokes still do happen, my beard has provided me with a brand that has led to opportunities I could have only dreamed about 2 years ago.
This whole thing is really just an example of me doing something that made me happy and not deviating from it because of other people’s opinions or social stigmas. Something as simple and down right silly as growing a beard has provided me with the confidence to go after the things I want in this life with refusal to conform what is “normal”. And that’s what this whole “Hear The Beard” thing is about. It’s about me documenting my journey as I set out to build the life I want to lead, stopping along the way to enjoy all of the amazing things that life has to offer; all done with the hope that I can inspire others to do the same.
This is me finding my own version of happiness via good music, late nights, cool clothes, great food and whatever else comes my way.
This is Hear The Beard.
