Creating Editorial Process Before A Finished Product

As a journalist, you’re pumped to play with the bells and whistles of your product, to apply them to every news scenario in existence and, to steal my boss’ parlance, create a “delightful” experience.

The reality? The thing is actively being built, workshopped and tested. You have pieces of the whole, but no finished puzzle (this is also OK!). At this juncture, it might feel easier to just wait until there’s more to play with. And I get it: journalists aren’t traditionally trained to operate without platforms. No excuse! The jobs of the ~future~ require us to think and act before developers hand us shiny tools.

Event: REDCAT and KPCC's The Frame present: Hearing Latino voices in contemporary culture

Even as Latino communities have long been essential parts of our society and culture, it seems that only recently national marketers and political pollsters have noticed that one-sixth of the U.S. population is of Latino or Hispanic heritage. Or that the United States is the second-largest Spanish-speaking country in the world, trailing only Mexico.

This is 
old news in California, where Latinos constitute nearly 40 percent, and yet the demographic group remains vastly underrepresented in many sectors—including arts and culture institutions. Why
 is this the case and what can be done about it?

These questions are considered by a distinguished panel of artists and cultural leaders that includes filmmaker Rodrigo García (Albert Nobbs,
 Nine Lives), LACMA Associate Curator Rita Gonzalez (Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement), writer Jeff Chang (Who We Be: The Colorization of America), Center Theatre Group Associate Artistic Director Diane Rodriguez, and will be moderated by CalArts President Steven D. Lavine.

Fusion's Jorge Rivas: Journalists should identify their brand

Jorge Rivas is the national affairs correspondent for Fusion, the cable news and lifestyle network that  ABC News and Univision launched in 2013. Before joining Fusion, Rivas was an editor at Colorlines.com, the national newsmagazine on race and politics. Based in Los Angeles, his writing and producing focuses on the intersection of race, politics and culture.

Rivas will be speaking at #Latincon on the state of the digital world for Latinos in the media.

In your experience, how do multimedia presentations help better connect to readers to a story?

I'm a firm believer in the power of visual communications to better inform readers and make stories more memorable. Infographics, videos and even 15-second Instagram videos can help readers not only have a better understanding of a story but also make it more memorable and hopefully also compel readers to share the story. But these new media tools should be used strategically and should be treated with as much attention to detail as the accompanying text story.

What advice would you give for freelancers or working journalists to have their content featured in a variety of outlets?

Journalists looking to freelance should identify their brand--decide what topics, issue areas and/or categories of stories they'd like to write regularly--and stay consistent across platforms and publications. Once writers build that identity both readers and editors alike will come to recognize them for those types of stories and seek them out.  Juggling multiple stories and delivering them on time is critical to getting freelance work but I would argue that writers remaining true to to their editorial voices is just as important.

Who is your audience? And, who would benefit from taking part in the discussion you will be participating in for #LATINcon?

  Ethnic media is changing just like the interests of readers of color is evolving. Journalists interested in working on stories at the intersection of race, culture and politics should come to the "State of digital world in Spanish/Latino/Latinos in media" panel.

Mark Hugo Lopez with the Pew talks Latinos and the media

From the Pew Research Center:

Mark Hugo Lopez is director of Hispanic research. He studies the attitudes and opinions of Latinos, Hispanic views of identity, the political engagement of Latinos in the nation’s elections and Latino youth. Lopez also coordinates the Hispanic Trends Project’s National Survey of Latinos, an annual nationwide survey of Latinos. Lopez received his doctorate in economics from Princeton University. He is an author of reports about the Hispanic electorate, Hispanic identity and immigration.

Lopez frequently appears in national and international media and will be speaking Friday on the state of the digital world for Latinos in the media.

How does the rise of the young Latino population affect media outlets and their type of programming?

Today’s young Latinos are largely U.S. born and have gone to school in the U.S. As a result, most are bilingual and many are English dominant. And as they enter adulthood, their media preferences—for news, music or television consumption—are impacting overall media preferences for all Latinos. For example, in news consumption, internet is on the rise as a source of news, largely being driven by young Latinos. And English is on the rise in news consumption—again reflecting the impact of U.S. born Latino youth.

  What binds Latinos together?

There are several elements that bind Latinos together—Spanish language use (75% live in a home were Spanish is spoken), links to their family’s immigrant roots (while 36% of all Latinos are immigrants, an additional 31% are US born and have at least one immigrant parent), and politics—all groups have been voting largely with the Democrats, even Cubans and Evangelical Latinos.

  But there are also some differences to note. Most Latinos prefer their family origin when describing their identity. Our surveys have also shown most Latinos do not see a pan-ethnic U.S. Latino culture.

  Who is your audience? And, who would benefit from taking part in the discussion you will be participating in for #LATINCon?

Pew Research’s audience is the general public, journalists, policy makers and academic. We are non-partisan and non-advocacy. And our mission is simply to provide data on trends within the Latino community (and the U.S. overall).

Meet panelist Ana Flores, co-founder of SpanglishBaby

Ana L. Flores is co-founder of SpanglishBaby and co-author of the book, "Bilingual is Better." A bicultural and bilingual mom who is committed to holding on to her heritage, she's been dedicated to creating content by and for Latinos in the U.S. and in Latin America. Now, through SpanglishBaby.com and LatinaBloggersConnect.com, she is living her dream of being a self-motivated entrepreneur and sharing the stories and resources which matter the most to her. 

Flores will be speaking Friday on establishing a professional identity online.

How did you break into the blogosphere?

I was a TV producer for 15 years, always working within the Latino industry both in the U.S. and in Mexico. Once my daughter was born, I decided to be a stay-at-home mom while I could, but then the recession hit my home in L.A. and plans had to change, but there were no jobs to be found in T.V. During that time I discovered the world of mom blogs and kept realizing that all the information I was looking for to guide me in motherhood I was finding there. But I wasn't finding blogs or communities that spoke to my experience as a Latina and the need to raise my girl bilingual, bicultural and proud of her heritage. So I decided I could use my experience as a content creator in this emerging digital medium and in February of 2009 my friend Roxana Soto and I launched SpanglishBaby.com. We never imagined the response would be so huge and so immediate. We were fulfilling an obvious need.

How did you take your blog from a concept idea to what it is now? How has it evolved?

We took 6 months to launch SpanglishBaby because we wanted to make sure that from the day we went public people would navigate the site and realize that we were serious about having professionally-written content and a well-defined voice and style. Since we created it with zero resources and just utilizing as many free tools we had at our disposal, we were in no rush to monetize, just to create quality content and build organic traffic.

Once the site started to grow, we enlisted paid contributors to bring in different voices and experiences. Slowly but surely, we started to monetize and in 2010, once the Census reports were published, the content sponsorship requests started booming.

We've always maintained a strict editorial line and rejected almost 90% of the paid opportunities because they weren't a good fit. With those brands we did develop a partnership with, we were able to use that income to reinvest in the blog in design and writers.

In 2012 we were approached by Bilingual Readers, a publishing company in Spain, to publish our book, Bilingual is Better. Having a published book allowed us to amplify our mission and reach more parents. 

Currently, SpanglishBaby reaches close to 150,000 people daily through social media. 

  Who is your audience? And, who would benefit from taking part in the discussion you will be participating in for #LATINCon?

My audience right now is quite wide and varied. Through SpanglishBaby I reach mostly Latino parents and parents-to-be that are looking for a like-minded community obsessed with making sure our language and heritage thrives.

Through Latina Bloggers Connect I empower and motivate Latina bloggers, storytellers and digital influencers. 

Those that would benefit in our discussion at #LATINCon are anyone trying to reach these audiences in an authentic and successful way.
