There was something nice about the cold. While Asher had grown up around the snow, it was different to this - the way he could feel the wind blowing in off of the ocean, even this far into town, the way the snow always seemed… more real. Purposeful. That might’ve been something special about Monarda - he never figured it out, but always appreciated it. He’d gotten himself a cup of coffee from the Little Bite after his shift that morning and made his way into town, sitting down on a bench that didn’t have too much snow accumulated on it yet, and just let himself relax, hands wrapped around his coffee, letting the cold nip at his nose. “Weather’s nice…” he’s not sure if he’s talking to himself or to a passerby - if someone chooses to respond, he’ll be grateful for the conversation; he’s learned from experience that, in this town, small talk can turn into something much more.
“It is,” Miles agreed, having just passed by when he made the comment. “I’ve definitely had worse winters, and I’m not even from a particularly cold place.” He smiled, doing his best to turn a conversation about the weather into something more. He was good at that sort of thing, it having stemmed from his almost constant need to be around other people. “You know when you live somewhere and the air genuinely hurts your face on winter days when you have to go outside and do things? This isn’t like that, and I’m glad.” Usually, he would have picked a warmer place to spend the winter, but this decision hadn’t been so bad thus far. “It will be even nicer soon, I assume.”
FRANKIE RIDLEY HAD NOT expected, per sé, to assimilate perfectly ( or instantly ) into a quaint life in Monarda, for a purpose presently unknown and thus unachieved, but perhaps the social media founder had naively hoped that — three months post-panicked pre-birthday move that made her circle of ‘besties’ ( gross ) titter about avoiding a proper fortieth bash — her status as the local celebrity would, by the present time, be diminished.
This was precisely the point: naively, because her Zuckerberg-But-Better — a low bar, barely worth even trying to limbo under, but still — status hadn’t budged. She pulled her sunglasses slightly off her face after the most recent encounter, and leant on a wall as though to recuperate some semblance of social energy.
Daniel had been sitting on a bench working on drinking a random coffee concoction he had made for himself. Turns out, it had sounded much better in theory than it actually was in practice, but he was determined to see it through. He had unintentionally witnessed the event and had stayed quiet, but now, watching her lean against the wall he decided to speak up. “Rough day?” He wondered, unable to tell if she would want to be spoken to or not.
He stays silent for a few moments, which is something he isn’t necessarily used to doing, before deciding to speak again, “you know, I was an actor once.” He says the words easily, but then catches himself, “not that I’m bragging- it ended badly- but what I mean is that with time people won’t notice as much anymore. This was meant to be hopeful.”
“what the hell do you do when your mother wants you to suddenly plan a family dinner for at least ten?” Pj asked aloud and to no one in particular. “I mean, four or five, one can handle.. but ten? absolute bullshit.” truthfully, she was looking for any escape, shoving her phone back into her pocket. she had four hours to either, A. figure out how to make a meal. or, B. run away and turn her phone off. she was hoping for the latter.
“don’t get me wrong, i love my extended family.. i just can’t be bothered to be surrounded by them right now. you know?” she sighed deeply, rubbing her hands over her face. “what do i do?”
“i don’t know, i’ve never been in that situation. i don’t think i’ve ever made dinner for more than two or three people.” he said matter of factly, taking the time to think over some sort of logical next step. “i guess you could ask for help. or you could order all the food and pretend you made it. take out for ten people would be pretty expensive though, so that’s another thing to consider.” he was thinking out loud as he attempted to work his way through problem solving, “i could help you cook if you’d like. i’m not great but i can make it work. i am also good at taking instruction if you’re a great chef and just need me to chop up vegetables or whatever.” he made the offer easily, knowing that he didn’t really have plans. “or you could cancel... i think. i’m not really sure how families work, are you obligated to be around them?”
“can i help you with somethin’?” tj asked the other as he moved from the back of his van, pulling off his gloves as he shot a smile their way. “don’t mind the appearance, i promise i usually clean up a lot better than this. well, less mud at least.” the irishman leaned against the hood, his sunglasses now pushed up to the top of his head so he could properly look at whoever he had spoken to. “or, if i was hearing things – i got cold beers in the back that might make me feel a little less weird if i offer them out?”
“i wanna say no,” he answers with a shrug of his shoulders. “the mud is understandable given what you’re doing. i think it would be weirder if you were perfectly clean right now.” he attempts to reassure him nonchalantly. “i could go for some beers, yeah, you just made my day. ” he nods his head, a smile forming on his lips. “how do you keep them cold though? is it ‘cause it’s cold outside or... can you have a mini fridge in a car- wait, no- the answer is that they’re in a cooler, isn’t it?”
he had forty more minutes left of his lunch break. a cup of tea grew cold as time unraveled and the cafe in town square bustled with clientele. the sounds of forks scraping against plates, would have grated his ears. yet he was zoned out, and trying to concentrate on the drawing at hand. Ken wasn’t an artist. he never really tried to be one. he could measure dimensions with a pencil on wood, and craft angels for square feet. his artistry, was typically in the shed building. perhaps that’s why he didn’t assume himself an artist.
but when the flashbacks would come unwillingly, the pencil moved itself. and rather than considering this action a medium, he felt like the medium. as if time used him for clues and cues in his environment. as if to speak something grander and more important than a cup of chowder.
because he was in the back corner of the cafe, he wouldn’t have realized that others could see that while he was focused on his drawing, the spoon in his saucer began to stir itself. in fact, he himself hadn’t noticed the magic until the sounds rounded at the rim metal cruising against metal.
Daniel had been coincidentally walking by the table on his way to find himself a seat when he noticed that the spoon appeared to be moving on it’s own. It stopped him in his tracks, his goal of finding a place to sit quickly forgotten. In the few years he had lived in the town he had noticed his fair share of strange things occurring, but it was still a little jarring every time it happened.
“Ghosts?” He said, taking a moment to process the potential explanation. He wasn’t sure if he believed that, but he did believe in ghosts as a whole and so it wasn’t too far of a stretch. “Those are some powerful ghosts, I think they’re called poltergeists. We should get one of those ghost hunter shows in here.” His expression slowly shifted from the look of concern at confusion to the more neutral expression he usually wore. “That would actually be cool. I’ve always liked ghost adventures, imagine if they came here.” He actually felt excitement at that idea for a moment and had to remind himself to relax. Things like this just happened all the time here, so either the whole town was haunted, or it was something else. On the other hand, maybe it was just that the whole town was haunted and that would make for a good episode. “Never heard someone’s first explanation be ghosts though. You didn’t even try to convince me it was the wind first.”
“I know I shouldn’t be out late at night–– but it was a very important date. WELL I thought it would be. And was it worth missing reruns of Tayshia’s season of The Bachelorette? No.” she puffed her lips out in a pout Zayshia would for ever go down in history as THE couple the process works for. if only she could hurry up and get her big break in reality tv and find her bachelor on ABC. “It wasn’t. The man I met was named Harry. Can you believe it? One of my old college friends thought she’d be hilarious and set me, Hari, up with a Harry.” it’d have been something if he were at least a PRINCE.
she grabbed the top bridge of her nose in exhaustion as she groaned in yet ANOTHER failed romantic connection. at this point she couldn’t count the amount of rejections she’d run into. “Before you go laughing at me, you should tell me what you’re doing out late tonight too. I don’t think it’s safe for either one of us, you know?”
“Sorry to hear that. Just for clarification, was the only problem that he was named Harry, or was there more? Not that I would judge you if it was the only reason, I just really love bad date stories. Well, who doesn’t? That is, if you want to share, no pressure. There’s problem a website or app to read those on. I’ll add that to my list of potential hobbies.” He rambled on, raising his eyebrows in interest as he spoke.
He paused for a minute to think over his response before shrugging, “you see, the thing is... I didn’t even realize it was late. I was just wandering around enjoying the night air, so this is the first I’m hearing about what time it is.” He did that a lot, often getting lost in whatever he was doing and losing track of time. It usually went fine though and he knew he didn’t have to be at work early tomorrow, so it would probably go fine this time as well. “Also, is there a streaming service that let’s you watch the bachelorette online? I haven’t ever really watched it but I love reality tv and there are a bunch of seasons of those shows, so...”
First, introduce yourself! What’s your name, how old are you, and what are your pronouns?
“I’m Daniel, but my nickname is Dani which is also good. I’m twenty eight turning twenty nine this summer. I go by he/him.”
So, you’re a part of Monarda’s population of one thousand, two-hundred and twenty-two, huh? How did you find Monarda? What compelled you to live here?
“I was looking for something new and different from what I was used to. I’m from Los Angeles so it’s a big city on the west coast and this is as opposite as I could get. I guess I also felt drawn to this place, which is why I picked it over any other small town in Maine. I think that a lot of the time if you feel drawn to something you should go for it, follow your gut and all of that.”
You know what makes Monarda special, don’t you? You know why the town is unique, why people are so excited around Halloween. What do you think about it? If you’re a human, do you have any particular emotions towards witches as a whole? Witches, do you have any feelings towards humans? You’re all cohabiting in this town, you must feel some way about the others.
“I think that the town is unique because it is small and most people seem to know each other. It’s also cool how intuitive everyone is. There are a lot of interesting people here and it has intrigued me since I came here in the first place. I’m not any closer to solving the mystery, but I think that that’s part of the fun.”
“I think witches would be cool. I’ve always liked the idea of magic, I mean, who hasn’t? Upset that I don’t have any. Movies and TV shows really gave me a false sense of what my sixteenth birthday would look like and it’s only gotten worse since then.”
What’s your favorite place in Monarda? Why do you like it there so much?
“I like the beach. It’s different from the kind of beaches I’m used to and it’s harder to get there, but on the bright side it’s also less crowded. I like to hang out on the beach pretty much all summer, at least when I don’t have shifts. I’ve just always been a beach person and that probably won’t change any time soon.”
How long have you lived in Monarda? If you had the choice, would you stay here or move elsewhere?
“I’ve lived here for six years and I’ve enjoyed pretty much every second of it. It was cool to move somewhere so different from what I was used to and I really have been enjoying it. I don’t know what the future holds and I don’t really think about it, so I might stay or I might not it really just depends.”
How do you view your family, even if they don’t live in town?
“My family is alright. We get along well enough and sometimes I even miss them, but I tend to go home for the holidays and that isn’t any more or less than I saw them before. I guess the hardest part is being away from the dogs, but there’s not a lot I can do about that since I’m happy here and they’re happy there.”
If you could be doing one job aside from the job that you’re doing now, what would you do and why?
“I don’t know. Maybe a surf instructor or something like that because I miss it most of the time and I used to be really great at it. I also think it would be cool to be a scuba diving instructor or something like that. Making coffee isn’t, like, my passion, you know? But it pays the bills and I don’t mind doing it.”
What’s the most comforting thing in your life? How could someone bring you comfort?
“I’ve always been an animal lover, so I think that having pets brings me comfort. I also think that friendships bring me comfort. The ocean also brings me comfort. I think that I’m comforted by a lot of things, and in turn I seek those things out. I think that someone could bring me comfort just by being a good friend and I would reward them by trying to be a good friend in return.”
What are three things on your bucket list that you’d like to complete within the next five years?
“I’m not really a plan ahead type of person. I wake up every morning and just see where the day takes me. Unless I have to work, or like, have to go grocery shopping, I suppose. In general I guess I would like to get a pet soon ‘cause I miss having them. I would also like to do some more travelling at some point. Maybe start reading more. Do these things count?”
Finally, what’s your favorite food? Feel free to describe it in detail!
“I like pizza, which I know is a very basic answer, like, who doesn’t love pizza? On the other hand, it’s probably a basic answer because it’s so good and many can relate to it. So, I’m sticking with it. My favourite food is pizza and I will not be taking criticism on that.”
First, introduce yourself! What’s your name, how old are you, and what are your pronouns?
“My name is Miles Aldan. I’m twenty three and my pronouns are he/him.”
So, you’re a part of Monarda’s population of one thousand, two-hundred and twenty-two, huh? How did you find Monarda? What compelled you to live here?
“I’ve been in a lot of towns and a lot of cities. I simply find somewhere I like and then I stay for however long I feel like I should. This was just one of those instances.”
“I haven’t been here for a Halloween, so no I have no idea why people get so excited around Halloween. Uh, I think witches are cool. Lots of good movies around them. Hocus Pocus is one of my favs.”
What’s your favorite place in Monarda? Why do you like it there so much?
“I like the café. I like working and I like food, so it’s a win win.”
How long have you lived in Monarda? If you had the choice, would you stay here or move elsewhere?
“It’s been four months now. I’ll move when I feel like the time is right.”
How do you view your family, even if they don’t live in town?
“I’m not in contact with my family and I don’t want to be. So... That’s that.”
If you could be doing one job aside from the job that you’re doing now, what would you do and why?
“I’ve been a bartender a lot of times and I’ve really enjoyed that. So probably that one. There should be a night club in town or something. I know there probably aren’t enough patrons for that, but it’s usually a pretty okay job.”
What’s the most comforting thing in your life? How could someone bring you comfort?
“I don’t really know what the most comforting thing would be. I guess I have a lot of hobbies that help me destress, if that counts. I'm also a fan of baths when I find tubs that I can comfortably fit in, which is unfortunately not that often. I don’t know how to be comforted either. I don’t think I would be comfortable enough with anyone to let them in enough for that.”
What are three things on your bucket list that you’d like to complete within the next five years?
“I don’t have a bucket list, but I would like to go to Vegas because I think that would be fun. I would also try sky diving, even though I know that’s an overdone one. I also have more personal goals I guess, but that’s my own business.”
Finally, what’s your favorite food? Feel free to describe it in detail!
“I like pasta because there are so many different kinds of it. Whenever someone is like ‘if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life what would it be?’ pasta is always a great answer. It’s filling and there are enough varieties to keep it interesting. It wouldn’t be good for you, but I’m willing to look past that.”
this was arguably the best part of his morning: sitting outside under the few rays of sunshine that started to peak through the winter’s harshness. he sat on a table outside of the cafe, not the chair, the table, on top of it, pulled out his pack of cigarettes and lighter for later, and prepared himself for the first sip of coffee of everyday. sander had to have coffee before he could actually feel human. it was two different people, before and after a decent cup of caffeine. and so he did, taking the first sip with his eyes closed as if he were about to kiss somebody… and immediately spat it back into the cup. he burnt his tongue. of course this would happen to him. he had a mild freak out then, sticking his tongue out as if the cool windchill would relieve him, and then he turned around and realized he wasn’t alone. “you saw nothing–” he said with a little lisp in his speech, since his tongue was still hanging outside of his mouth.
daniel was a little late to his shift, a fact which meant he was arriving at the cafe just in time to see what happened. he laughed, but when he was spoken to he forced the smile off his face. “this is normally the part where i would say something like, saw what? but i guess that doesn’t really work in this case.” he shrugged, “so i guess instead i’m just going to ask if you spit it out because it tasted bad, in which case i can make you a new one if you give me a couple of minutes. or if it’s because it burned you, which i can’t really help with. also, you probably won’t be able to taste things today, so that would be unfortunate.”
“And then he tried to tell me that Skittles were somehow better than M&Ms, so I was like, ‘You must have Skittles for brains if you think their whole taste the rainbow slogan is actually good. I mean, rainbows are just water vapor, so they’re basically trying to market Skittles as being colorful water?’ And I didn’t even get into those weird commercials where people eat Skittles and get that weird candy-chicken-pocks. Why would you want to eat something that makes you sick? But he retweeted me with, ‘The only reason people buy M&Ms is because they think the green one is hot,’ Which, first of all, gross,”
“…And secondly, what about those commercials where the red one has to save all the others from the rocket ship? But I didn’t point that out. I…may have chosen some other select, not-so-nice words and…got myself locked out of my account for the next three days… Anyway,” Annabelle took a breath. “My whole job is using my phone to post stuff but the app on my phone isn’t even working now which…is why I just need to take a little quick sneak peak at your phone. Pretty please?”
“Didn’t they also have a commercial about a giant animate tube sock? Every single Skittles commercial seems like some weird dream. I guess it works for them though, if people are willing to argue for Skittles being better than M&Ms.” He said, the look of confusion clear on his face as he spoke. Her words had raised a lot of questions in his mind. “I know you kind of explained it, but it’s a lot for me to process how an argument about candy got that heated,” he admitted with a slight shrug of his shoulders.
Regardless of his statement, he found himself reaching for his phone anyways. He held it out to her in offering, “you’re not going to get in a fight from my account though, right?” He asked, but there was a teasing tone in his voice to communicate that he didn’t really think that would happen. “I wouldn’t know what to do without social media. It’s just so convenient to have an endless stream of content to consume. It’s nice that you were able to make a career out of it though. Do you enjoy it?”
“Oh hi,” Emery said as he heard the door bell ding as the customer came in. “So glad to have you here is there anything I can help you with?” He said in his best professional voice with a customer service smile, since no one had come in for the first half of his shift he’d been glad to finally see someone join him. Granted he was glad to see anyone even if they weren’t a customer, especially if they had a pet with them, because more likely than not he’d be allowed to pay for them.
daniel thought over the question for a moment before turning to the other, his head already nodding. “i think so,” he said after a few moments of that. “i’m looking for a book that will make me love reading again.” he chuckled, a small smile on his face, “no pressure.” he got more serious for a moment and raised his shoulders in a nonchalant shrug, “seriously though, it’s alright if that’s not possible. i just have more time on my hands than usual and remembered that i used to love reading. so any suggestions you’ve got will be great. i’m open to most genres, but i would prefer shorter books to see if i can get back into it.”
at this point lynx was fairly sure that he spent more time staring out the window of the little bite than actually working; the commission dropped in his inbox a few hours ago, written in a very polite manner by a young teen, asking for a hand drawn portrait of their beloved family cat, called toodles. the name still had him smiling to himself, alongside the picture of the cat with his tongue sticking out, displayed on his laptop’s screen, yet he couldn’t get himself to start working on it - as if all of his inspiration suddenly evaporated, leaving him with no thoughts and his head empty. he was idly doodling in his sketchbook, lines and shapes and other little things, until the scritching of pen on paper turned into unpleasant scraping that almost felt like claws ripping into his brain; of course his pen had to run out at the worst possible moment, without him having another one on himself. fucking great….
so he finally turned away from the window, looking around to pick out someone to bother with his bullshit; his gaze finally settled on someone on the opposite corner of the cafe, who seemed to have a few seconds to spare, leaving all his belongings behind, he approached them, nervously picking at the sleeve of his hoodie. “hey, sorry… hi, do you have a pen i could borrow? just for a few minutes, i swear i’m not gonna run off with it.”
miles had been sitting in the café for a while, not really doing anything in particular as he took his time drinking the coffee he had ordered. a coffee he was pretty sure would be cold the next time he bothered to pick it up and take another sip of it. oh well, he clearly hadn’t been that invested in the drink. instead, he repeatedly found his focus shifting out the window, eyes appearing glazed over as he zoned out. he wasn’t even thinking of anything in particular, simple things like the weather at the moment, or what his plans for the day were going to be. nothing requiring any careful thought, but he still remained lost in it.
when they spoke, it startled him at first, although it really shouldn’t have been a surprise to be spoken to in a public place. especially in a town as small as this one, where he already knew a lot of people despite only residing there for four months. “uh...” he trailed off when he zoned back in and registered that he had been asked a question. he shifted then, moving over to search through the backpack he sometimes carried while running errands on foot. “i might,” he said as he started to search through it. he genuinely wasn’t sure if he would, as the only thing he ever really found himself writing were things like grocery lists so he could remember what he needed while he was out. by some stroke of luck though, his fingers closed around something that felt like a pen and he pulled it out with a celebratory expression on his face. “would you look at that, i do have a pen.” he said, his tone a little more enthusiastic than was warranted. he held it out to them in offering, “you don’t have to return it. i buy those multipacks from dollar stores whenever i need pens," he was smiling good naturedly, “so i’m not emotionally attached to it or anything.”
[AVAN JOGIA | TWENTY-EIGHT | HE/HIM | MAN] if it isn’t DANIEL MISTRY ! you know, DANI ! they’ve lived in monarda for SIX YEARS. some people say that they’re OUTGOING & LAIDBACK, but that they can also be NON COMMITTAL & DETACHED. last i heard, they were working at THE LITTLE BITE as a BARISTA ! i’ve also heard the rumor that they’re a HUMAN. if you’d ask me, they remind me of WAVES CRASHING ON THE SHORE, CHIPPED NAILPOLISH, GUITAR STRINGS BEING PLUCKED ! i wonder what monarda’s got in store for them today!
here is some basic template info about him. but here is some actual backstory:
he’s from la and his family was pretty wealthy
he is an only child
he always grew up with a lot of dogs
he’s a huge animal lover but his fave animal is dogs because he gets them the most due to always have dogs as pets
he has always been pretty out going
it is not hard for him to make friends although he was also more of a have a lot of okay friends rather than a few really good friends kind of perosn
but he’s happy with that it never really bothered him
his parents never really paid attention to him so he had to outsource attention
plus he is a leo so
anyways as he got older he kind of started to act out and in his early 20s he was kind of a wild child he really liked to party
it got him into a lot of trouble
he had started an acting career with the help of his parents money but it went downhill pretty quickly because he got a bad reputation for partying to much and not taking his job seriously
eventually he couldn’t find management so he couldn’t really pursue that path and left the profession
which caused him to do a little soul searching
he is still trying to answer the difficult question of “what do i want to do with my life”
this journey somehow brought him to monarda
he felt drawn to the place and he loves that it is a small town because it contrasts nicely what he was used to all of his life in la and because it’s on the coast and he really loves the water
speaking of almost all of his favourite things to do can be related to the beach like surfing obviously and then swimming and relaxing
he likes to be the center of attention but is also somehow laidback
like he likes attention but he doesn’t really let the negative things get to him
he would generally be a calming person to be around even with his extreme extroversion
he’s pretty much always just chilling
on the other hand he is afraid of committing to things and tends to flake out of plans
he is also detached so it’s harder for him to form meaningful bonds to other people because he never really as
he’s a good friend but it’s hard to be his best friend
he is happy in monarda he is just relaxing enjoying his time here
he probably is at least moderately aware of the witch stuff not in so many words but he’s probably just like “idk that’s just how it is here it’s cool” about it
i think that’s all if you wanna know anything else just ask
here are some wanted connections i thought of for him if you’re interested
[JACOB ELORDI | TWENTY-THREE | HE/HIM | CIS MAN] if it isn’t MILES ALDAN ! you know, MILES ! they’ve lived in monarda for FOUR MONTHS. some people say that they’re VENTURESOME & DETERMINED, but that they can also be GUARDED & UNPREDICTABLE. last i heard, they were working at THE MONARDA CAFE as a WAITER ! i’ve also heard the rumor that they’re a HUMAN. if you’d ask me, they remind me of LONG DRIVES, LOUD MUSIC, LATE NIGHTS ! i wonder what monarda’s got in store for them today!
tw death mention
ok so i have some random info filled out for him here but here is some actual backstory:
he had a pretty average middle class american childhood (or so tv tells me) his parents were together, he had a younger sister, and they all had a golden retriever
that changed when he was 12 though and there was an accident where his sister ended up passing away and he blames himself for it
his family came apart at the seams after that his dad left and moved on and started a new family and miles was left with his mom who was no longer in a good position to take care of him
inevitably he ended up going into foster care and he did not do well in it
as soon as he was able to leave he did and he has pretty much been on his own ever since
he travels a lot and doesn’t tend to stay in one place for long
when he gets bored of a place he packs up and goes somewhere else and starts his life there until he gets bored and the cycle repeats
but he’s been in monarda for 4 months now
this does also mean he’s still mostly oblivious to the witch stuff
he does not believe in the supernatural but i’m sure this will change quickly lol
as for his personality he is a generally bright person he is very social and loves to be around other people so he tends to make friends wherever he goes
however most of these friendships tend to be rather shallow in that he doesn’t actually tell anyone important things about himself or let people get too close
this stems from a fear of them deciding to dislike him if they really know him so he hides behind a façade so he cannot get hurt
but yes he’s easy to get along with and he loves a good time parties bar nights any sort of social gathering and he will be there
he’s also super romantic but tends to have an idealized idea of love which often makes his crushes and relationships unsustainable in the long run
he can be super unpredictable although this may somewhat stem from others not really knowing him can’t be predicted if you can’t be understood in the first place or something
anyways yes he’s outgoing and loves to make friends
i think i’ve covered it
i made a page of wanted connection ideas here if you’re interested!
