WOKE Speech: Day 1
“your convictions won’t fail you”.
It was a good sunny afternoon and I was taking my sweet, sweet time in the shower. All freshened up, I grabbed my phone to look at the notifications from the class group chat.
“The Sheets link for the speech is now available.”
My eyes widened as the trickle of cold water from my newly washed hair started to fuse with cold sweat. With a glimmer of hope, I opened the Sheets link, and I was greeted by a file with the headings "Day 1" and "Day 2."
...
Of course, the Day 2 slots were all filled.
I just took a long heavy sigh and typed my name under Day 1 in a spot that seemed best. Hello, performer #4. If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s affirming myself. Although at that moment, there was a thin line between affirming and coping. Hahahaha. But deep within, I meant it. I said all the good things I could think of and tried to trust what I read, what I felt, and what I learned. “Your convictions won’t fail you”, I reassured myself.
Everyday is a good day to be controversial.
I tried writing about topics that I was sure had many information available online, topics that are *too* controversial, and even topics suggested by other people. But in the end, I still chose the first topic/theme that came to mind. I chose it because I knew I could write it best, regardless of the information available or if it was controversial. I chose the theme of “women are more than mothers”. It was inspired by one of the roles in The Giver called “Birthmothers”, since I was reminded of how women, until today, are still expected to birth children as if that is our only purpose in the world. It became a limiting label just as how the role “Birthmothers” wasn’t frowned upon in the novel even though they were the ones keeping the community alive.
The days leading up to the performance day were stressful. We were all busy getting ready for different performances in other courses too. Nevertheless, despite how difficult it was to find papers, articles, etc. regarding my chosen theme, I made every effort to anchor my speech in reality. While writing, I realized that I had a lot to say that keeping it within 5 minutes became the bigger struggle. But in the end, I was so pleased with how everything turned out that I was eager to share it with everyone.
PERFORMANCE DAY
I was riding the bus on the way to school and making last minute revisions on my speech. I didn’t want to stress too much about the time limit while performing so I tried to condense it without compromising the message, of course. For some unknown reason, it didn’t feel like my heart was about to jump out of my chest like it normally would before I did performances. “Is the PNUan blood finally flowing in me?” I thought.
After the performance, I felt good about myself. There were some stutters here and there, but I knew I got my message across just as I had intended it. All the other Day 1 performers did great, too. From the costumes, singing, and variety, I could definitely see we all did our best. But the best thing that happened to me was when Prof. Erly stated that my speech stood out. My??? Speech??? After all that stress and preparation, Prof. Erly validating me was the best reward possible.
Everything that led up to it was memorable. I had the joy of picking up a novel again and it was one that I truly liked. I learned new things about myself and the world, which only Literature can quite possibly accomplish.
THE GIVER by Lois Lowry
Hands down of my best reads. After reading, I definitely thought of adding more variety to my reading list. The unsettling ambience as I was turning page by page, as if a looming disaster was about to happen make it one of the best reading experiences I ever had. My jaw dropped at every revelation! It tackled dark themes but since I found out that these can also be for younger audiences, I can understand why some parts were executed the way they are.
Some people did not like this book for the discomfort it evoked. Like when Jonas bathed an old woman, mentions of infanticide, suppression of sexual urges, etc. But it’s exactly why I liked it. The discomfort felt while reading was exactly done for us to question the world they live in, but in contrast, is a thought-provoking book that questions our thoughts on issues faced by the real world. In the discussion of this novel, I also learned about “reading against the text.” There have been instances before where I didn’t quite agree with the text’s message or character portrayals. Learning the term for it and what it does urged me to engage in it more whenever I read a text.
The ending of this book is what got me the most. Upon asking around, I found out that some of my classmates and even some reviews on the internet believe that Jonas and Gabriel died. This was not how I interpreted the ending at all! I thoroughly believe that they both made it and are happily indulging in music. This might just be my optimistic self speaking, but even though happy endings are not always guaranteed, I’m holding on to the fact that Jonas didn’t have a memory of music hence, the sounds he heard can not be a result of hallucination. I can also say that I have a love-hate relationship with this ending, though. I can’t usually appreciate open endings unless it gives me enough to conclude. I just want to be able to completely love or hate a story’s ending and not allow anything in between. Hahahaha.
VIEWING WORKSHEETS
The completion of the worksheets is anticipated after watching the TEDx Talks. These were excellent for self-evaluation because I had to truly organize my ideas regarding the lesson's contents. After completing these worksheets, I usually get a feeling of accomplishment since I was able to put my insights into words, which solidified the perspective I had either received or developed.
TEDx Talks: Speaking to the heart
One of the things I liked in this course was watching TEDx Talks. It is interesting to hear how other people's lives have been improved by literature. Watching these definitely helped in me picking up how to "speak to people's hearts", which I was able to utilize in a performance. These are important resources to share since literature encourages action, and I was moved by the developments and accomplishments made possible. When an educator fully understands the potential of literature in a classroom, the students manifest as people with critical perspectives and empathy.
If I were to pick a 'favorite', I would choose Linda Sue Park's "Can a Children's Book Change The World?". Her entire talk encapsulated the significance of literature teaching starting from the youngest. While it is one of an educator's role to teach literature, some parents often undermine the experience of reading books for a young child.Developing children's literacy is a shared effort between the home and the school.
The legacy of literature will remain long after us even as the world turns.

Chamber Theatre: Performance
Chamber Theatre: D-DAY
Everyone started getting on their respective teams to finalize the stage as well as the props before the performance started. I can still vividly remember how chaotic it was, but in a good way. We were all offering to get our hands on something just so we could finish before Prof. Raymundo arrived and looking back, I truly appreciate the beauty in that.
We were all very excited when news came that Prof had already arrived and that our adviser, Prof. Dolba was invited to become one of the judges. As soon as they entered, the lights turned off, everyone became quiet, and the stage lights were opened. Action!
The hard work of all actors and the director paid off and it was evident in their performance. The song choices and the ambience were spot on. All of them were brilliant on stage and everything we worked for was leading up to this moment. We got a 1.0! It marked the beautiful conclusion to our face-to-face classes before we went back to online classes again. We’re proud of each other and it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of each and every one. Bow!
Chamber Theatre: Practice
While the actors and stage men were busy with their practice, the props men were constantly discussing the materials to be used to create the props on stage. I must say we had a difficult time picking out from the suggestions what were most feasible based on the budget and availability. But thanks to the resourcefulness and cooperation of everyone, we were able to get on the creation process smoothly. It was always hectic when it came to the props but teamwork made the dream work!
CHAMBER THEATRE: Brainstorming
The class had decided to present “New Yorker in Tondo” by Marcelino Agana Jr. in the upcoming Chamber Theatre for Survey in Philippine Literature. In this meeting, the class talked about the possible persons to fulfill the roles in the play, as well as the props men and stage men. Krylle Cagara volunteered to be the Director of this play and Jenard Baiza took charge of the costumes and the selection of actors.
I took part as one of the props men and this only marked the beginning of what was the most memorable part of this term.
