A recent piece I wrote on Belfast charity Women’s Aid who help women in domestic abuse relationships.
Women’s Work festival Belfast, organised by Charlotte Dryden. Single page spread in Local Women magazine Belfast.
International Women’s Day
In the past I have written a couple of blogs. I have since deleted these. I have always been a writer but I prefer my work to be published hard copy and there are several reasons for this.
I may be young (ish), I’m turning thirty this year but I grew up without the internet. Aside from writing my other passion has always been photography. With the expansion of the internet and everything going digital I found my passions and talents were eroded, extinct. Everyone is now a writer. Everyone is now a photographer. Point and click. Opinion and click.
The backlash of posting anything can be horrific, life threatening. Trolls are merciless. I prefer my work to be published in magazines and newspapers, at least once removed from these people who insult you and your credibility from behind their i-screens.
But I am faced with a dilemma. In order to get my work ‘out there’ I have to put myself ‘out there’. This is scary. As I said, I have always been a writer. In order to add some credibility to that statement I became a qualified journalist in 2014. My degree previous to that was in film, photography, art and women’s studies. I am educated and trained and yet feel weak in the face of internet trolls.
Today is International Women’s Day. On this day I am putting myself ‘out there’, honestly, with no pretentions. From today I will upload my published work and blog about being a freelance writer in today’s world. I aim to write short segments of a fiction novel I am working on.
This blog is for me. An experiment, but also an experience.
These are my words.
I am woman. Hear me ROAR.
Most recently published feature. To celebrate and incorporate International Women’s Day (8th March) The Oh Yeah Music centre Belfast is holding a week of music events, panels and discussions on women in music. I spoke to organiser Charlotte Dryden and legendary DJ Annie Nightingale who is performing as part of the festival.
