who would sing what songs in the glee cats episode
the episode starts when brittany announces that lord tubbington feels as if glee club is ignoring all the contributions that felines have made to the world of music. the others are confused, but rachel agrees, using it as an excuse to suggest that the new directions has a cats week. to drive home her point, she performs the ad-dressing of cats.
the new directions are still reluctant, but perform jellicle songs for jellicle cats anyway, and they immediately get slushied. they are unwilling to continue their assignment afterwards, and artie says that he thinks that there was kitty litter mixed in with the slushies. mr schue is irritated at their lack of enthusiasm, and performs the rum tum tugger to inspire them. somehow, this works.
meanwhile, sue is annoyed that the glee cub has decided to do a cats week. she reveals to becky that she was meant to star as old deuteronomy in the original broadway cast, but she was cut because andrew lloyd webber hates people with arthritis of the ear (which sue now has.) she vows to take the new directions down, and this transitions into the unholy trinity singing macavity.
blaine confides in kurt, saying that he’s always felt a special connection with munkustrap. kurt is frustrated, saying that HE’S the munkustrap of their relationship. they have a fight about this that lasts most of the episode, and for some reason they decide to resolve it by doing a duet of mungojerrie and rumpleteazer.
finn tells rachel that he doesn’t understand the musical and why she likes it, which she takes as a personal attack on her character. they go to the choir room, where brittany brings out lord tubbington for a performance of mr. mistoffelees, and it is not explained when she manages to make him disappear into thin air. this magical moment is short lived when rachel decides to express her anger at finn by singing memory. he apologises, and all is well.
sue gleefully informs will that she managed to shut their production down after going on sue’s corner and suggesting that cats the musical will lead to beastiality. will goes to emma for advice, who tells him that sue is probably just confused and hiding something. will confronts sue, and they do an incredibly awkward performance of grizabella: the glamour cat. although sue is warmed by the performance, she still says they can’t do the show, because the new directions are freaky enough as it is.
will breaks the news to the glee club, but says something weird about how they managed to find a clowder/litter within each other. finn asks if he can sing one more song to show that he’s learned to appreciate the musical and also to demonstrate that he’s been working on his dancing skills. he begins to sing skimbleshanks: the railway cat, and the rest of the club joins in, with mike doing the tap dancing segments. the episode ends with the new directions in the auditorium, performing the song together, with the editing suggesting that “you'll meet without fail, on the midnight mail, the cat of the railway train!” is a reference to them going to regionals.
