though the costume has made it so that small children are equally as terrified as they are morbidly delighted by her , daphne has been thankful that the majority of injuries she’s had to treat so far has mostly been heat - related , mild as their summer was . she was sure it would pick up once the jousts started , and she was expecting to see some returning visitors . still , the job that she loved on a regular basis was only made more fun by the general levity of working in a tent with a bird mask on . obstructed as her view was , she did still manage to catch a glimpse of a face only truly familiar to her within the halls of their shared occupation . ❝ oi , ❞ she calls , because she refuses to lend any credence to the idea that ren faire workers must stay in character all the time . ❝ here to take over for the rest of the day ? ❞ the tone she takes is jocular , teasing . an attempt at camaraderie from one mediwitch to another who knows how often work comes calling when you least expect it . ❝ or is the ren faire gig only for us baby healers ? ❞

the set of her mouth is mulish , almost childish in that way that she doesn’t allow herself to be . this feels childish , however . this feels like something that was missing back when they were all children playing at war and she was just daphne . daphne as her parent’s raised her wouldn’t have had this , wouldn’t have raised a fuss over someone deciding to stop talking to her out of the blue . daphne as she was would hardly have even spoken to this girl in the first place . and this , though it feels like an argument in it’s fledgling stages , still sends a thrill of NOVELTY shooting through her gut . daphne relishes in the idea of a stupid , dramatic discussion . she barely resists the urge to stomp her foot and only then does she think that she must look just like her sister . ❝ maybe i wouldn’t have , ” she says , petulant , sharp , sweaty . she is only made more uncomfortable by the unforgiving weight of the costume she’s chosen for herself , and she almost wishes that this much - needed and asked - for discussion wasn’t happening currently , if only to spare daphne the embarrassment of the untimely occasion and the overdramatic outfit . ❝ i would have liked the option to try , though . ” and there’s the rub , isn’t it ? it’s that daphne didn’t even get to make an attempt . this was a mistake taken from her when she barely got to make it in the first place . ❝ i would have tried . ”

the familiar voice echoes through the med tent that daphne has stationed herself at , quickly followed by the sound of daphne’s forehead meeting the wood of her work station table . the initial panic brought on by her sister’s presence here is tempered by her news , and daphne is soothed slightly by the fact that at least astoria does not need medical attention at the moment . ❝ oh , wonderful ! ❞ daphne exclaims , voice dripping with faux cheer and muffled somewhat by the fact that her head stays down as she continues to not look at her sister . ❝ i was worried that maybe you were missing work to be here , but i guess that’s unfounded . ❞ and the news is not welcome , exactly , but daphne cannot find it in her to be overly mad that she will no longer be finding various feathers and other bird detritus around her apartment . ❝ are you on the hunt again , then ? maybe gonna take a look at ye olde bulletin board for any ye olde help wanted signs , perhaps ? ❞

"what do you think?" ginny asks the other without preamble, appearing in the gap between store shelves with two different childrens outfits held high for them to see, a hint of desperation to be found in her tone. her hardest job is already done, thank merlin; thoughtful gifts for her partner to bring to the upcoming party already wrapped to the best of her abilities and packed away for him to collect, later. his friend would have understood if he'd arrived empty handed, but she'd wanted to make his life that bit easier and had made doing so her priority. it's just her left, now, and fresh challenges she's not used to having are found in trying not to outdo him and working out what the happy parents might like without having the benefit of someone else's opinion to lean on. he hadn't wanted to come and everyone else she'd asked was too busy on short notice, but it's no wonder she gives up trying to go it alone, forcing the first person she spots to be the tiebreaker. "option one-" something pink and gauzy with a matching bow is brandished with an air of distaste, while the more understated combo of dungarees and a cream sweater is given a little bit more care, "or option two?"

the tension in the few silent moments that follow is palpable, hovering in the air around them; unseen, but certainly felt. it would be unfair of millicent to blame daphne entirely. they themself are completely at fault, coming around the corner too fast, attention focused on their reflection in a nearby shop window rather than the pathway ahead. however, blame has never settled very easily on a busltrode’s shoulders. ⸻ especially not one as bullheaded as they. short - temper only ever lead to irrational reactions. " i’m curious, greengrass … " sentence comes to a brief pause, tongue curling around front teeth in an attempt to swallow bitter irritation. at the same time, a hand lifts, dusting floo powder from one shoulder. " … was there something about my extremely expensive, one of a kind, couture outfit that screamed it needed something a little extra today, or did you just see me across the street and think hey, there’s millicent, they look entirely too happy. maybe i’ll go see what i can do to ruin their morning? because if it’s the latter, congratulations. mission accomplished. 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚊𝚒𝚛 𝚐𝚛𝚘𝚠𝚜 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚗 𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚎 tense as daphne summons the empty bag into her hand . the use of magic is a strain on her already depleted reserves , but she refuses to do something as a humbling as stooping down or bending over to pick up the bag when millicent bulstrode stands right in front of her . and maybe it sends her straight back to school , when she was younger than most of the major players even if she knew them all before then , when they grew up together , when she had to grow her spine anew , separate from the lumbar of her sistersʻ company . when it comes to slytherin and the marks that house leaves , it never stops feeling like being the little fish in a much bigger pond . like a cornered animal . maybe , even exhausted as she is , that is how she manages to cobble together all of that schoolyard casual cruelty . she draws herself up , uncaring of the powder or her disheveled ponytail , and rakes over millicentʻs form with a roving look . her lips twitch downward but she refuses to give any other reaction beyond a deadpan : ❝ you overpaid . ❞

"oh, man..." and they're about as sympathetic as they can be considering it's mostly their fault, comfortably high & running on just a few hours of restless sleep. they've already called in sick ( complete with fake cough ) to their shifts - markus more understanding than their knight bus supervisor, though what could he do, really ? - and only dared to step outside their shitty apartment to complete their own kind of supplies run. unluckily for daphne, their journey back had led them here, blinking down at the powder in the kind of bafflement that only their current level of substance abuse allowed. daphne's right to be incensed, but damaris is slow to reach truly 'apologetic'. "that sucks. you keep the receipt ?" they brush powder off their chest, slowly, wrinkling their nose up when the breeze catches it and threatens them with a sneeze, "i bet it wasn't cheap, huh ?"

𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝚝𝚘 𝚋𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝚜𝚑𝚒𝚏𝚝𝚜 𝚋𝚎𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚎 something of an impossibility eventually . mediwix become much too aware of the side - effects of too many doses of the wideeye potion . it doesnʻt matter if theyʻre overrun and understaffed , no one is much help when they canʻt see through their own too - watery and too - red eyes . even daphne , who is on the younger end and usually dependable enough to work through many a long nights , gets sent home eventually . ( and maybe daphne is getting a little tired , what with being both the on - the - scene response and the one administering treatment back at the hospital . it is strange to let her magic drape over these people who might have flinched to see her draw her wand if they were back in school . it is tiring to have spent those tense first few moments looking around for her sister and promising to herself that sheʻd spit in the potions of all the da member if she had to treat astoria at any point . ) which is how daphne ends up in diagon , shuffling out of floo pow after a re - up on her powder supply ( because multiple sleepless nights did NOT good apparition make ) . itʻs the sort of mindless errand that sheʻs still capable of making at this point , movements made moreso out of muscle memory than any true sort of intention and with half - lidded eyes from a potion long since wearing off . which , of course , makes it all the more difficult for her to move out of the way when someone bumps into her in the alleyway . and , because nothing goes right after one too many shifts , the bag of powder slips down to the cobblestone and explodes across both herself and her assailant . daphne looks down at the mess , frozen . a moment passes . then another . and then , from the depths of her soul , comes a heartfelt , ❝ son of fuc — ❞
