Mixed Media- Frank Frank Frank
Boise State University, Drawing I, Spring ‘15
For this drawing assignment I used water colors on water color paper, but prior to that I edited my sketch in Photoshop and then printed it on said paper. Almost simplified to the point of looking like an emoji, this character is supposed to be Frank from the show Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I posed him in a way that looks like he’s acting Frank while eating a Frank’s hot dog. My objective for this was to try something different, but amusing.
Collex Site- Make Me Up
Boise State University, Graphic Design I, Fall’15
This project was an introduction into web design. I made the subject matter about fashion and cosmetics since it is something I find of interest, but also something popular on the internet. With the help of Photoshop and Textwrangler I was able to turn personal photos into hyperlinks that change into alternate photos whenever the cursor hovers over them. On the index page the first two hyperlinks in the top row link to separate pages, one previews makeup brushes and the other previews lipstick/lipgloss. Among the tabs at the very top of my site there is an about page which, as you can figure, is information about myself. The layout of my site is meant to be girly but playful, as a way of inviting women of all ages. The purpose of this project was to test what I know about web design, in addition to understand coding, html and css.
Illustration- Angry Sparrows
Boise State University, Drawing I, Spring’15
The objective of these Illustrations is to show anger through the use of color, facial expression and oddly enough a bird. In this case I went with a sparrow, as it had the right features to go with my art style. The female present in the top image looks up at the upset sparrow, as it gets after her for being too close to its nest hiding among the tree branches. The use of red emphasizes the anger, but also the subjects I want to draw the most attention. The use of black brings out the important details, allowing the white to give a nice balance throughout. I began with a sketch, which I then redrew and traced with multiliner pens. Afterwards, I colored in the image with copic markers, prismacolors and color pencils. Lastly, I put my image into Photoshop and edited/enhanced things such as color, noise and dimensions.
In the bottom image I tried to convey anger through neutral colors and realistic expressions. It doesn’t convey anger as immediately as the above image, however I believe it still translates well enough. In creating this image I colored in a sketch with Copic markers, Prisma markers and colored pencils. I then put it into Photoshop and filled in a background color with texture, in addition to editing/enhancing the overall look.
Ultimately, this project tested my ability to create a mood in a way I never had before.
Illustration- Anthophobia
Boise State University, Drawing I, Spring’15
This was for a drawing assignment in which we needed to interpret some kind of phobia. With that being said I went with anthophobia, the fear of flowers because it seemed unusual, but also potentially something beautiful. When I think of flowers I think of them as having feminine qualities, so naturally I went with a female figure to embody this idea. However, rather than have her afraid I went with making her look serious, as if she is what causes the fear, not the fear itself. I began with a sketch that I then edited and colored in Photoshop. Once I felt the image was complete I then had it printed on magazine paper to give it a polished look; almost as if it was really meant to be in a publication.
Modular Font- Magical Girl Font
Boise State University, Graphic Design I, Fall’15
Inspired by a genre of anime known as Magical Girl, I went with a playful and cute design. The pixel appearance of this font reflects old school games such as those you’d find on a retro arcade game or Gameboy. If you have ever seen the Magical Girl genre for yourself, then you’d know it tends to have young females who transform into charming outfits in order to defend against evil. With that being said, their costumes usually have ribbons and bows, hence the overall look of this font. The center of each bow is meant to look like a gem, in order to emphasize the magical aspect or at the very least to appear decorative. What I really want is for this font to be useful, especially when it pertains to any décor related products. I began with a trial format that then expanded into the full alphabet, which was critiqued and then edited into what you now see here.
Funny Face- Don’t be a Prick
Boise State University, Graphic Design I, Fall’15
This font is made up entirely of steel T-pins, structured together by Brandon Feely, Damir Bazdar, Clara Gray and myself, otherwise known as Team Awesome. Each letter is photographed at a slight angle to the left so that the length of the pins can be seen poking out from the black canvas behind it. The soft studio lighting allows the pins to cast a shadow onto the canvas, creating a strong presence, which was our desired effect. The purpose of this font is to look sharp and somewhat edgy. First, we brainstormed the idea, second we shot our photos on a grey corkboard canvas, and thirdly after some class critiques we placed the pins on darker canvas and with better lighting.
Yestermorrow Booklet- Learning to Love Software by Ellen Lupton
Boise State University, Graphic Design I, Fall’15
The design of this booklet is simplistic, but rich. All with the help of Indesign I started with several rough drafts for the title page, end pages and inside pages, about 2-3 roughs each that were critiqued by fellow classmates and my professor. For the title I used a crisp black Rockwell font and deep red Adobe Caslon Pro font. The inside pages use Adobe Caslon Pro font as well, but in a dark grey color. The end pages are probably the most eye-catching, made with a pattern of black vector software images atop white non-glossy cardstock. This gives a very straight forward, but enticing appearance.
