Vaping, the Final Project

Our roles as group members were as follows; I was in charge of the interviews, what questions to ask and getting a smoker and non smoker to participate. Asia created a survey which contain questions, we wanted to ask the community, regarding vaping. And Brian had the job of editing the video and adding in his personal testimonial. We tried to use as much class time as possible to complete the video, because of our lovely schedules which have been problematic since the beginning of the semester. But when it comes to our group nothing gets in our way. We always manage to make things work out. Which is what I'm going to miss most about this class. We used one of our class periods to go to the RU vaping shop on Easton Ave. So that we could interview the business owner. However the business owner was a little camera shy and so he had his employee take the limelight. We are very grateful to them for taking the time out of their busy day to answer our questions. Before Thanksgiving break we all distributed ourselves "homework" in the form of tasks, which we need to complete to stay on track. I will admit the Thanksgiving break flashed before my eyes and I did not get to complete my task of interviewing my brothers. So the Monday when we got back from Thanksgiving break which was our last in class working time, was supposed to be used to start editing and putting your video together. Unfortunately, I set us all back behind because I didn’t have my interviews done. However I made sure that I went home and got those interviews done so that we could complete the video. Asia's survey worked out really well. She created the surveys and posted them on multiple different social media sites including Tumblr and Facebook. Brian and I made sure we reblogged and shared so that we can get as many people to take it as possible. In total I think we got close to 90 participants, which I'm really happy about. And because we used social media to post our survey, majority of our participants were millenials which worked out perfectly. All in all I think we all did a great job of getting this final project to come together in a timely manner. Special thanks to Brian for getting some extra footage that added to the videos esthetics. This class has been a very memorable one. I learned so many new things. Weather it was about my generation in general or about how to use a social media site. I couldn’t have asked for a better final project. And I made some really great friends in the process.

R U Vaping?

Brian Asia and I would like to make a video about vaping for our final project. IN our video I’m hoping to include the dangers of Vaping. I’ve decided to use this blog post to discuss some of the research I’ve done so far.

Vaping has become increasingly popular over the past year. Although vaping was already being used for several years, for many water soluble hallucinogenic compounds. The idea of using it as a safer alternative to cigarette smoking is what has made it more popular. The availability of flavored vaping oils with no nicotine has opened the market to young kids trying to "look cool". This can become problematic, because the vaping oils are simply a liquid, it's hard to know what is really in there. It can be anything from nicotine to THC to Flakka, a deadly synthetic drug, more commonly known as "$5 insanity". According to The Journal News, vaping "can function as 'training wheels' for teens who could then graduate to tobacco use." Who is to say that it would stop there? With other drugs available to them, THC and tobacco use might be the least of our worries. In the video below you can see an individual who is clearly on Flakka.

But Flakka isn't the only synthetic drug available in vape form. Others such as K2 and Spice, which are "legal-weeds", are also available. These are problematic because they are made of chemicals that are not FDA regulated. "Bath salts" a form of methamphetamine are also vapable. Bath salts are the drug that were the cause of the zombie man in Miami, Florida. In case you are unfamiliar with the case, the man who was high on bath salts was eating the face of another man. Heres a video of a girl on a Bath salts trip.

Monmouth and Ocean Counties have been having a horrible opiate epidemic, with serval heroin overdose deaths this year. Although I'm not sure is heroin if vapable, I have found forums where people seem to be discussing the possibility of it. This a particularly scary thought. With the abundance of people who are vaping and the inability to really tell what is in that liquid. It can become very easy for this to explode into something so massive no one will be able to stop it.

Awesome topic guys! I think finding a job now a days is difficult enough. However, you can have a million jobs lined up but, if you don’t know how to handle an interview…. you can find yourself back at square one. Job interviews are a pretty nerve racking thing. But watching an informative video like this might help your viewers better prepare themselves for an interview. I liked Rachel’s character but I think it might have gone a little over board with the millennial stereotypes. A good portion of youtube views are millennials and they might find it a little offensive/ off putting.

For this project we wanted to take a satirical approach to the subject of life skill. As we learned throughout class, other generations labeled us as lazy, entitled, and coddled. We wanted to point fun at these misconceptions but offering a how to video with polarizing dynamics. We settled on showing everyone proper interview and prospective email etiquette. Throughout the video you will see the distorted view of millennials manifested in two scenarios: how to send an email to a potential employer and how to conduct a job interview. Considering we only had roughly five minutes we left out many other essential job search tools to account for time.

The Millennial Generation has various options when it comes to eating. However, the easiest way for the Millennials to get food is to eat out at a restaurant or get fast food. While these options seem to be the more convenient options they aren’t always the best. Eating at restaurants requires individuals to travel and also spend a decent amount of money. Eating fast food requires traveling, can be cheaper than most options, but is also extremely unhealthy. If individuals of the Millennial Generation took the time to make their own food they would have much healthier food choices and better options for food.

Here our group cooked Chicken with all fresh ingredients. We spent under $20.00 and were able to make multiple servings of our dish. Our dish consisted of healthier eating alternatives. We used lean meat that was skinless (chicken), reduced or low fat ingredients (fresh ingredients), low-fat cooking methods (baking), and limit high sodium ingredients (we only used a little bit of soy sauce). Eating healthy is a real challenge for the Millennial Generation but our video really highlights that if you put in that little bit of extra effort you can have amazing results.

Mmmm! That chicken looks delicious! I will definitely have to try that recipe. I like your choice of topic. Eating healthy can be pretty difficult for a college student on a budget. I’m glad you guys chose this topic. I know of a few millennials who don't know how to cook. I will have to recommend this video to them. I enjoyed your little bits of comic relief. Cause sometime you just have to laugh at yourself. The only thing I wish you guys had done was list the price of the ingredients. That way the viewer known how much the cost per serving might be. This can be particularly useful when someone is cooking this recipe for a spur of the moment gathering, on a budget.

Rutgers Bus Etiquette

As Rutgers students and active bus riders, Asia, Brian and I, have notice that some of us don't know proper bus etiquette. I’ve always thought this type of thing to be common sense but many of the people on the busses included myself sometimes forget some of these basic techniques. In our video we give you a short do’s and don’ts list, along with some pictures and example video. We also used some simple soothing music so the video is not so "in your face". I hope you guys enjoy the video.

Food, Glorious Food~!

For our video project, Julie, Mengjie and I wanted to focus on a topic that was relevant for college students. We all found common ground in our interest in food, and from there we decided to do a cooking style program for students on a budget, and with limited resources. We narrowed the idea down further to be recipes including just three ingredients: I know for a fact we have chosen to prepare chili and macaroni and cheese. These quick and easy recipes are personally some of my favorite meals, so I must say I’m pretty excited to make them, and make them in a simpler way than I’m used to.

We took this concept of the three-ingredient dinner from Buzzfeed, which is a popular social media outlet. They often have video segments that are posted that include “simple” ways of making tasty, popular recipes. They are made with minimal ingredients; yet maximize the taste (I would know, I have already tried a recipe of theirs for Oreo Truffles- they’re amazing!). Their three-ingredient chili calls for chop meat, a can of beans, and a can of tomatoes (who uses canned tomatoes? I would rather just cut them myself, which I will probably fight to do). This classic meal provides for a good amount of protein, which is always a necessary pick me up for the college student, and you can make a large amount of it and just save whatever you don’t get around to eating that night. Totally perfect, totally delicious.

Our other definite recipe is macaroni and cheese, which is definitely something a lot of people can (and hopefully will) enjoy! This recipe is just as simple, just pasta (our recipe calls for shells, I’m not complaining), cheese, and milk. Obviously these recipes could call for personal embellishments, but keeping it simple seems to be the most college thing to do. By showing others how to cook these meals, we hope to teach other college students that it is possible to cook their own meals on a budget, rather than going out and buying incredibly processed, unhealthy foods.

I believe we are also going to tackle a dessert, one of those desserts that can be made in a mug in the microwave, courtesy of Julie’s suggestion. I love the idea: quick and easy desserts are right up my alley. It doesn’t matter what kind of dessert (I completely forgot what we have picked out and what ingredients are involved), as long as it’s a dessert I have the utmost confidence in it being delicious. I’m actually a bit curious to see what it’s like to cook with others, because when I cook, I tend to take over and do things on my own. It will definitely give a new perspective on both making simple meals for myself at college and also getting the opportunity to work with others in that environment.

And in case anyone wants the recipes we are trying and picked out, number four and number fifteen are our simple recipes!

I love this idea!! I love to cook and being on a budget can always make things a little bit more difficult but with a little creativity you can make some pretty great meals. I lived off campus for while and my roommate and I had an agreement I would cook and she would clean. It worked perfectly. To keep things low budget we only shopped at the Aldi supermarket. That is my go to grocery store when it comes to being on a budget, as most college students are.

Rutgers Buses!

Brian, Asia and I have decided to make an instructional video about proper Rutgers bus etiquette. Our biggest hurdle has been trying to get a bus so that we can shoot our video. After several emails and phone calls I've learned a few things worth noting. Apparently the buses are not actually Rutgers owned. The company who provides the service to Rutgers is called First Transit. All though it seems Rutgers owns almost everything in the State of New Jersey, it does not own its buses. I find this kind of funny, but I guess maybe they've done this for liability reasons. For example if there is an accident involving one of the buses Rutgers would not be liable for the accident. When trying to find public record of Rutgers bus accidents I continuously hit dead ends and I think this could have something to do with the fact that First Transit is a privately owned business. But that was not the only road block I encountered. When trying to secure a bus to shoot the video, we were hit with a pretty hefty price tag. Because it’s a private business we needed to "rent" the bus which would run us over $300 for 4 hours. So how does one shoot a video about proper Rutgers bus etiquette without a Rutgers bus? If you guys can come up with any answers please share!! It'd be greatly appreciated.

Although, I wasn’t sure about the fate of our bus scenario I continued to do some research. How many times have you been late to classes because you had to wait for a bus? Well Rutgers Department of transportation was nice enough to share some of that information with us. According to the February 2015 On-time Performance Status the buses that were on-time the most were the C and the B. Well, woopty doo, who the hell takes the C bus anyway. The C bus is the Busch commuter bus, which in all reality is only an intermediary bus, that gets students from the commuter lots on Busch to the main part of the campus. So anyone taking that bus will likely have to get on another bus to a different campus. And the Bus is on-time 94% of the time but the B bus does from Livi to Busch and back which is kinda like walking distance is you ask me. and the buses that were late the most were the EE and the F, which were late 25% of the time. This comes as no surprise to be because I'm a commuter who parks on the Cook/Douglass campus.

So I thought back to when I first transferred here and had to take a bus for the first time. As if the classes weren't hard enough. Now I had to somehow tame "The Beast" that is Rutgers transit. Shaodi Huang, an art history major, created a new Rutgers bus map which he posted to the Muckgers website just this month. It's kinda like a subway map. I think it might even be more helpful then those stupid linear guides that they have hanging at the bus stops.

Aside from that cool Rutgers bus map I wasn’t really able to find too much information. So I decided what a better way to do research then to just ask Rutgers students themselves what they want us to talk about in our video. So my question to you guys is what kind of stuff you encounter on the bus? What things annoy you about the buses? Is there anything in particular that you want us to discuss? Youtube Videos Dos and Don’ts

As millennial college students we can sometimes find ourselves struggling in our classes. For a generation so connected to the internet it is only natural that we seek help with our studying online. Youtube had been my go to site when it comes to getting a more visual representation for something I didn’t quite understand in class. However, not all videos are created equal. Some videos are very easy to understand. They have a nice flow and are step by step explanations. Others are more like historical stories to help you with your history homework. But sometimes you can get, some pretty, not so helpful videos that can sometimes bore you to death! Here is an example of one of those videos.

I've, therefore, decided to use the video below to make a list of do's and don'ts.

Do make your video about history.... if you want....

Don’t make it painfully boring!

Do make sure to speak clearly.

Don’t speak in a mono-tone voice.

Do use fun pictures and movie snippets to get your point across

Don’t use horribly acted out scenes and 1970's, reading rainbow style, music.

Do have fun making your video.

Don’t make your video soooo loooongggg that your view feels they need to skip to the "good stuff".

Analysis of a Video Essay

As humans in the 21st century, we are constantly one click away from groundbreaking information. We walk around with enough information in our smartphones to put the Library of Alexandria to shame. We are making up new vocabulary every day and we have changed the way we communicate with people on a global scale. But how has all of this affected us?! In this youtube video by ASAP science entitled "5 ways social media is changing your brain right now", they explain exactly that.

The layout of this video is pretty straightforward. The main idea is how social media is affecting our brains. They took this idea and broke it down into 5 easy to manage ideas:

We have become literally addicted it.

It has affected our ability to multi-task.

Phantom Vibration Syndrome?!?!?! WHAT?!!

The release of dopamine caused by social media use.

How online dating has affected us.

All of these topics were then broken down further into more informative scientific details. All of which were supplemented with pictures. This helped the view better understand the otherwise misunderstandable scientific details. I particularly like their use of a whiteboard and a little artistic ability to help them get their point across. I've seen them do this before of youtube videos from Khan Academy, however, in those videos they used real time video to show step by step instructions. In contract, ASAP Science used a time lapse video of the artist drawing the video, so that it looked more animated and told the story little by little. They were also smart to put a list of sources in their description.

Music and Fashion has shown to be one of the most power things that can define a culture and a particular period in time. For us, we decided to focus on music and fashion during the period of 80s and 90s. We wanted to make it more specific to millennials who were born in the timeline that characterizes millennials of the 80s and 90s and how growing up in those periods helped influence the way that they use music and fashion and integrate the two together. We also slightly dived into the idea of social causes and social justice and how that somehow influenced or was influenced by music and fashion in the 80s and 90s all the way to now. .Lastly, for our interview, we were able to take a slightly different direction by trying to understand the way millennials from other countries understood music and fashion in their culture and also in the context of American culture. This puts things into perspective as to how music and fashion not just of the 80s and 90s but in general can impact people culturally and beyond.

As someone who identifies as an androgynous dresser I love your little ode to Prince and his androgynous style. He was absolutely a “bulldozer” in the gender non binary ideology, he paved the way for the acceptance of androgynous fashioned today. You might even be able to say that the acceptance of androgynous fashion might actually help us as a generation to overcome the idea of blue and pink and the idea that there is only two genders. This can open doors for the transgender community. Maybe fashioned can be a catalyst for a gender revolution!

As Millennials who are all about to start entering the real world work force (it’s a scary thought, isn’t it?), it’s only natural that we should be looking into the availability of jobs, their longevity, and their prospect towards our planned futures. Likewise, as college students, we are expected to be making choices that will lead us where we want to go. It’s a pretty obvious plan, but is it something that is feasible for us to do? Are we even going to be able to use our college degrees in the work force? In our Podcast, Generation Jobless, we give our personal stories about how we are trying to prepare ourselves for the potentially daunting work lives we are going to lead, and insight to how we feel that it might be to pursue any job once we leave school. Featuring some valuable narratives from Peter, who gave us a bit of pointers and evidence that getting a job after college might not be the scariest notion in the world.

I think your podcasts topic is so spot on! lol The only complaint I have is that the effects went a little bit over board, in my opinion. it distracted from the content a little bit too much.

But anyway, I love your point about the trade jobs. It’s so expected that we go to college and get a degree but, if everyone works the jobs that require a degree then who is going to collect our garbage and fix our plumbing. This doesn't mean that these people are uneducated, most trade jobs require a certificate of some kind.

So many of us are graduating from college with an unfathomable amount of debt. And all though the economy is supposedly “on the rise”, getting a job is so difficult. Getting a job now a days is kinda like online dating. We put in our applications and resumés online and hoping that they happen up on application, like some kind of lottery. Then, you hope that the person who hires you is going to pay you enough to make those ridiculous school loan applications. All of us in debt, and with so many of us not able to get jobs substantial enough to pay our loans, Its like a giant debt balloon growing and growing and growing. I’m just waiting for that ballon to pop!!

Who thought a 6 second video could make you famous? Well in our first podcast, “The Impact of Social Media,” Raul, Julie, and myself talk about probably one of the most talked about topics in our generation; millennials. In our podcast we revolve around the revolution of social media and what it has done to those who create their own material using different social media platforms like YouTube, Vine, and even Snapchat. So what can happen after making videos for these different platforms? If you get known, companies will actually reach out to you to promote their products. So people who reach up to 250,000-300,000 followers are big enough to work with. In our podcast, we interview three well known internet celebrities who made their debut by simply posting a video on social media. They probably didn’t think it’d turn out the way it did, but they’re doing better now than they were before. Our three guests are Tyler Oakley, Lilly Singh aka Superwoman, and Jerome Jarre. It’s pretty amazing to me that our generation is so creative that we have figured out how to make money using the internet. Making money online isn't just selling something on eBay anymore. These jobs require skills in video editing and computer and audio video in general. Not to mention they require talent. You guys mentions that there is now an award show , the “Streamy Awards”, which is an award show dedicated solely to internet celebrities. YouTubers are my favorite examples because they are like actors, but they are self made, they have do their own editing, they have to make themselves look good. Most of them don't have their own group of editors. i think that takes a lot of talent and I don't know if I can ever do that.

On a chilly, fall night, Podcast 219 came into existence on the second floor of Scott Hall on the College Avenue campus of Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey. Composed of Asia, Lauren, and myself, we recorded “Netflix and Chill…or nah?: Dating in the Millennial Generation” in our namesake room, 219.

This podcast focuses on the subject of online dating and the language that shapes the dynamic of our relationships in cyberspace and beyond. As Millennials, we live in a truly remarkable time where we are afforded the ability to explore an entirely different dating pool than generations before us never could have been able to experience. In this podcast, we touch on how we are able to connect with people around the globe although many of our encounters occur with those within relatively close geographical distance. Even with this, many people take to utilizing the affordances of altering who they truly are before meeting others in person in a concept called “catfishing”. We will also cover how Millennials have also developed certain terms, phrases, and other forms of language that has shaped the way in which we interact with each other.

So join us on a comical exploration of the way the advancement of technology in our society has changed the dating scene, and let us know your thoughts and opinions!

What an interesting blog post! I wonder what might have happened in 1989 to have caused such a spike. Maybe it was a particular artist that started a trend. Perhaps there could have been a change in censorship on the radios or tv. Only a little bit more research will really tell.

Millennials, Me, and Depression

Now, I don’t know about how you all feel, but for me, it’s just plum difficult to get out of bed more often than not. And I don’t just mean I’m too tired to get up. This is a kind of exhaustion that goes beyond the physical; it’s left me mentally drained, physically weak, and with a lack of desire to do anything. I’ve barely been eating, my sleep schedule has hit a bare minimum, and my work habits have been drastically slacking. This sort of thing is known as clinical depression, and it isn’t just me who is feeling the effects of this illness.

While I felt the effects of depression when I was much younger, these more difficult side effects have emerged in my more recent college years. This college emergence of depression is incredibly common, and it’s believed that at least 44 percent of college students have experienced symptoms of depression. The article talks about Millennials as being the products of “being groomed to be academic overachievers, but became, in reality, emotional underachievers.” While it acknowledges the feelings these Millennials have, it seems to focus more on this concept that we need to learn how to cope.

I agree somewhat- some people don’t have the coping capabilities of others, and those are skills we learn with experience. However, feelings are valid, regardless of how extreme they might seem to an outside party. In my case, my motivation to do anything has drastically declined, and I’m constantly exhausted, both physically and mentally. Sometimes I go through phases where it is easier to encourage myself to get out of bed and be productive with my day. Sometimes one event takes my life by storm and my sadness flares back up in ways unimaginable. Sometimes it’s difficult to do anything when you don’t have the energy to- likewise, when you don’t have the energy to begin with, it is difficult to do even the most minute of things you set out to.

Depression is often concurrent with levels of stress and anxiety, and Millennials most definitely feel the repercussions of these issues as well. There are higher demands of Millennials in both school and the work force, and that certainly adds to what makes us as a generation anxious and overwhelmed. While my stress and anxieties aren’t necessarily a result of my hefty workload (I have been overextending myself for years), it does have something to do with the prospect of not feeling adequate in my planned field of study. I ideally would like to go into art therapy, which is a form of psychology. With all of these issues I’m attempting to tackle, sometimes things seem incredibly bleak. I often find myself wondering if I would ever be able to help someone else if I feel like I am incapable of helping myself. Being depressed is often sugar coated as merely “being in a funk,” and that it can be easily overcome. Sometimes it can. Sometimes it takes work: a LOT of work. But there is always a light at the end of the tunnel (and if you’ve managed to get through this entire blog watching me rant a little, bless your little souls).

Your post really struck a chord with me. About two years back I too went through my own battle with depression. It was certainly not an easy thing to deal with and to be honest I might have not made it through it if it weren't for my best friend. I reblogged this post to tell you that you're not alone in your struggle there are plenty of people out there who have gone through, or are going through the same thing. I am always open to talk about my experience if you ever need to talk. The good thing about being at the bottom is there is no where to go but up. It really does get better... I promise!!!
