Final Project.

As soon as our professor said we could basically do anything for our final project, I got extremely excited.  i got my inspiration from the how to be an activist video that was shown in last class. I think being an activist and sticking up for something you really believe in is extremely important.  For my final project I will be doing it alone.  I have decided to do a series of 7-10 blog posts on sexual assault.  Sexual assault is something that is very prevalent in our society today, especially as college students.  1 in 6 females are sexual assault victims or either attempt or completed rape.  There are so many stigmas that surround sexual assault and I feel like they should be brought to light. 

Many people blame themselves for their rape because of surrounding stigmas and also because of the negative experiences they’ve had after their assault.  It is never a victims fault and it’s time for people to really understand that.

I plan on interviewing a few people at our university who are involved with various movements to end sexual assault.  I will be interviewing two really good friends who are a big part of the “No More” campaign here at Rutgers.  I will also be writing about VPVA (violence prevent and victim assistance) and what they do here at Rutgers.  I will write a few posts about sexual assault in general, who is effected, and give out some important statistics.  I will also speak on how Rutgers and Residence Life handles sexual assault on our campuses or with our students. And my last and final post I will be telling my own story about sexual assault and how it has effected me personally.  This is one of the first times that I will be opening up about my sexual assault to a large group of people.  I am very excited and nervous  to be exploring this topic in general, but I think it would be a great idea and really open a lot of people’s eyes.

Final.

           This semester has been the absolute pits. I have always been someone who fights through the pain and pushes forward, but in the last few months I’ve found that any sort of effort is a trying process. I’ve done several blog posts previously on depression from a more factual standpoint, but for my final project I wanted to chronicle depression in a more personal manner. People can sympathize when you say “I have depression,” but sometimes it’s hard to understand what someone’s really going through unless they flat out tell you what’s going on with them. And that’s what I want to do.

           I have had depression for years (albeit not officially diagnosed until more recently), and previously I was able to channel my negative energy into my art. As the low has come back with a vengeance, I have found that art is not as therapeutic as it once was, and I am scrambling to find any way to relieve any sort of negative emotions I am having. While it hasn’t helped much, honestly, I have found myself writing down thoughts and feelings I have throughout the day to troubleshoot what is going on and to just purge. This gave me the thought of doing something poetry related to try and convey to others exactly what I’m going through.

           The idea of a poem on depression then evolved into this idea of performing it. Almost like a slam poetry styled idea, where I would be dictating my own writing, possibly interlaced with footage I take to relate to what I am talking about. For the actual dictation portion, there is a photography room at Mason Gross that the art students have access to, it is completely blank and empty, and I think it would provide the perfect environment to stage my speaking.

           I’m not truthfully sure if I would be exploring a whole lot of questions related to this topic. I feel like you have more answers to any questions you might have about depression if you are clinically depressed or have experienced it for yourself. Maybe it would be an exploration of “why do I feel the way I do?” and “is there anything that can be done to change this?” My questions might end up being more directed at “why have none of my efforts thus far been successful in improving my mood?” or “how much can one person possibly experience?” Maybe people would even respond to being asked “how many of you feel this, too?”

           This is going to be incredibly personal. Some of you probably won’t really care, and that’s completely understandable and fine. Some of you might whisper and say things, maybe even think I’m crazy. That’s fine too. But depression is a growing epidemic of an illness that millions of your coworkers, family, even friends might be going through- even you might be going through it. Some are more comfortable talking about it than others, which also is a touchy subject. My hope is that not only can I get myself back on a path that I enjoy and have some sort of feeling towards, but maybe, just maybe, I can help someone else in the process of recovery.

You are extremely brave for talking about this.  There is such a huge stigma that surrounds mental illnesses.  I personally was diagnosed with depression 3 years ago and was re-diagnosed with bipolar disorder this past summer.  You are right, most people do not know what it is like to live with a mental illness and probably never will. Do what you feel comfortable doing/writing. I am very interested to see what you come up with!

Final: Blogging while Bipolar

Choosing the material of my final project has proved to be a real challenge. I’ve been especially torn on deciding of the subject matter. Upon hearing the assignment I immediately thought of two possible avenues with one being the clear easier path. I work in the restaurant industry. I absolutely love my job and want to pursue a career in the field. The assignment serves as a fun platform to flaunt my knowledge of the industry and shed some light on a topic I absolutely love. Although the restaurant themed assignment appears to be lighthearted and fun, I am faced with an alternative I feel obliged to pursue.

I have bipolar disorder. It’s an illness I’ve struggled with my entire life and consequently have learned how to manage over the years. It’s a part of me I refuse to be ashamed of, yet a part of me I certainly don’t readily share with the majority of people. Call this topic too much information, call it an overshare, I call it my reality. Unfortunately, after spending the past few weeks in a particularly bad depressive episode, it is a reality I realize cannot ignore.

I think this is an amazing idea! There is so much stigma that surrounds mental illnesses and most people don’t understand what it is like to have a mental illness.  I also live with bipolar disorder so I understand more of where you are coming from and such.  It would be an amazing idea to give individuals a first hand look on what it’s like to have bipolar disorder and how it effects your everyday life.  I also just want to say that you are super strong and brave for doing this, I really commend you for it and look up to you! Can’t wait to read!

Video Reviews

I remember this group originally thinking of doing 3 step meals, I like that you all decided to add in the dessert even though it needed more than one ingredient.  The video came out really great overall!! You girls did a good job at getting good clean shots of everything and doing everything step by step.  While you had writing on the screen I would’ve liked to hear from you girls more.  I like the fast forwarding and also the replay part with the mac & cheese, it was a good touch.  I think the topic that you chose was great! College students usually do not have a lot of money having small tips like this is very helpful for us when in need of making some food. Overall awesome job.

I’m so exited you all ended up getting some kind of bus footage even though it wasn’t everything you were looking for.  I loved the video.  You had various outlets that you used: pictures, actual footage; and even a white board.  You all took turns talking and used really upbeat music.  Overall what you did is what viewers want to see.  You were to the point and made it fun to watch.  Plus the topic is so necessary! Bus etiquette is a real thing and so many people don’t know about it.  You guys touched on all the important parts of it too! Awesome job!

The Millennial Generation has various options when it comes to eating.  However, the easiest way for the Millennials to get food is to eat out at a restaurant or get fast food. While these options seem to be the more convenient options they aren’t always the best. Eating at restaurants requires individuals to travel and also spend a decent amount of money.  Eating fast food requires traveling, can be cheaper than most options, but is also extremely unhealthy.  If individuals of the Millennial Generation took the time to make their own food they would have much healthier food choices and better options for food.  

Here our group cooked Chicken with all fresh ingredients.  We spent under $20.00 and were able to make multiple servings of our dish.  Our dish consisted of healthier eating alternatives.  We used lean meat that was skinless (chicken), reduced or low fat ingredients (fresh ingredients), low-fat cooking methods (baking), and limit high sodium ingredients (we only used a little bit of soy sauce).  Eating healthy is a real challenge for the Millennial Generation but our video really highlights that if you put in that little bit of extra effort you can have amazing results.

Food, Glorious Food~!

           For our video project, Julie, Mengjie and I wanted to focus on a topic that was relevant for college students. We all found common ground in our interest in food, and from there we decided to do a cooking style program for students on a budget, and with limited resources. We narrowed the idea down further to be recipes including just three ingredients: I know for a fact we have chosen to prepare chili and macaroni and cheese. These quick and easy recipes are personally some of my favorite meals, so I must say I’m pretty excited to make them, and make them in a simpler way than I’m used to.

           We took this concept of the three-ingredient dinner from Buzzfeed, which is a popular social media outlet. They often have video segments that are posted that include “simple” ways of making tasty, popular recipes. They are made with minimal ingredients; yet maximize the taste (I would know, I have already tried a recipe of theirs for Oreo Truffles- they’re amazing!). Their three-ingredient chili calls for chop meat, a can of beans, and a can of tomatoes (who uses canned tomatoes? I would rather just cut them myself, which I will probably fight to do). This classic meal provides for a good amount of protein, which is always a necessary pick me up for the college student, and you can make a large amount of it and just save whatever you don’t get around to eating that night. Totally perfect, totally delicious.

           Our other definite recipe is macaroni and cheese, which is definitely something a lot of people can (and hopefully will) enjoy! This recipe is just as simple, just pasta (our recipe calls for shells, I’m not complaining), cheese, and milk. Obviously these recipes could call for personal embellishments, but keeping it simple seems to be the most college thing to do. By showing others how to cook these meals, we hope to teach other college students that it is possible to cook their own meals on a budget, rather than going out and buying incredibly processed, unhealthy foods.

           I believe we are also going to tackle a dessert, one of those desserts that can be made in a mug in the microwave, courtesy of Julie’s suggestion. I love the idea: quick and easy desserts are right up my alley. It doesn’t matter what kind of dessert (I completely forgot what we have picked out and what ingredients are involved), as long as it’s a dessert I have the utmost confidence in it being delicious. I’m actually a bit curious to see what it’s like to cook with others, because when I cook, I tend to take over and do things on my own. It will definitely give a new perspective on both making simple meals for myself at college and also getting the opportunity to work with others in that environment.

           And in case anyone wants the recipes we are trying and picked out, number four and number fifteen are our simple recipes!

For the dessert portion of our video, we will be making brownies in a mug! It is a very simple recipe that requires little effort! You simply combine the few ingredients in a mug, and stick it in the microwave. I have actually made this before, and they are surprisingly tasty. I think that our project offers valuable meals for the every day, budget-minded and time-constrained college student. I think that by providing these easy ingredient meals, we can spark interest in other life skills, like healthy cooking and time management.

Our group is also doing food but we’ve decided to go with a healthy food option.  However, this three ingredient thing sounds awesome!! Obviously as a college student on a budget that’s probably one of the greatest ideas ever! Unfortunately I’m an RA in the Quads on livingston campus so I don't have constant access to a kitchen to cook in. Next year I’m going to most likely live in the livi apartments though so this video would defiently help me out since I barely know how to cook anything. I can’t wait to watch this video! Mac & cheese is my favorite food so I love you all for using it! And this desert mug thing is genius! Your video is going to be absolutely awesome!

Rutgers Buses!

Brian, Asia and I have decided to make an instructional video about proper Rutgers bus etiquette. Our biggest hurdle has been trying to get a bus so that we can shoot our video. After several emails and phone calls I’ve learned a few things worth noting. Apparently the buses are not actually Rutgers owned. The company who provides the service to Rutgers is called First Transit. All though it seems Rutgers owns almost everything in the State of New Jersey, it does not own its buses. I find this kind of funny, but I guess maybe they’ve done this for liability reasons. For example if there is an accident involving one of the buses Rutgers would not be liable for the accident. When trying to find public record of Rutgers bus accidents I continuously hit dead ends and I think this could have something to do with the fact that First Transit is a privately owned business. But that was not the only road block I encountered. When trying to secure a bus to shoot the video, we were hit with a pretty hefty price tag. Because it’s a private business we needed to “rent” the bus which would run us over $300 for 4 hours. So how does one shoot a video about proper Rutgers bus etiquette without a Rutgers bus? If you guys can come up with any answers please share!! It’d be greatly appreciated.  

Although, I wasn’t sure about the fate of our bus scenario I continued to do some research. How many times have you been late to classes because you had to wait for a bus? Well Rutgers Department of transportation was nice enough to share some of that information with us. According to the February 2015 On-time Performance Status the buses that were on-time the most were the C and the B. Well, woopty doo, who the hell takes the C bus anyway. The C bus is the Busch commuter bus, which in all reality is only an intermediary bus, that gets students from the commuter lots on Busch to the main part of the campus. So anyone taking that bus will likely have to get on another bus to a different campus. And the Bus is on-time 94% of the time but the B bus does from Livi to Busch and back which is kinda like walking distance is you ask me. and the buses that were late the most were the EE and the F, which were late 25% of the time. This comes as no surprise to be because I’m a commuter who parks on the Cook/Douglass campus. 

So I thought back to when I first transferred here and had to take a bus for the first time. As if the classes weren’t hard enough. Now I had to somehow tame “The Beast” that is Rutgers transit. Shaodi Huang, an art history major, created a new Rutgers bus map which he posted to the Muckgers website just this month. It’s kinda like a subway map. I think it might even be more helpful then those stupid linear guides that they have hanging at the bus stops.

Aside from that cool Rutgers bus map I wasn’t really able to find too much information. So I decided what a better way to do research then to just ask Rutgers students themselves what they want us to talk about in our video.  So my question to you guys is what kind of stuff you encounter on the bus? What things annoy you about the buses? Is there anything in particular that you want us to discuss? Reblog my post with any suggestions.

This is such a great idea. I can’t wait to see this video. I’ve had friends joke about mandating a class about bus etiquette! I think that there is definitely room for improvement, and it’s something that all Rutgers students probably have opinions about. The one thing I find most annoying about the bus system is that there is a huge lack of F busses. It seems like everytime I am waiting for an F bus (which is often, because I regularly travel back and forth to College Ave where I work and take classes to Douglass where I live and take classes) I will watch 10 LXs pass by before a single F stops. Maybe this is an exaggeration, but I do think that they should put more busses on the road during prime hours. I don’t know if this may be a topic your group could explore, but either way, I’m excited to see the outcome.

I love this idea too, this is so incredibly relevant for all of us. As a visual art major, my classes are in downtown New Brunswick, and the only bus that travels down that way is the EE. I often encounter a lot of flustered students who are trying to get to Cook/Douglass, which often shoves the visual art students and their supplies off the busses. I agree with Julie, I also see a million (clearly exaggerating but still) LX busses before anything else appears. In case you needed more info, I remember there being a minor accident at the Scott Hall bus stop last school year, but I can’t remember if it was caused by a bus. Good luck!

I agree this is a great idea!!! The majority of people definitely do not know proper bus etiquette.  And yeah, the buses aren’t owned by Rutgers, they think it’s cheaper to rent the buses because of how much bus repairs would cost them if they actually owned all the buses.  I think we’d have enough money for that but whatever.  The worst thing on the bus is when people do not get off the bus when people are trying to leave, that for when people won’t move in the bus more so that more people could get on! Also, this year for the incoming freshman orientation gave a presentation on proper bus etiquette! Maybe you should reach out to new student orientation and see how they went about it and see if they would let you all use some of their materials to help you with your video!!

Food, Health, and Cooking

When we think of food, as college students we often think of the easiest meal to make or of the food that we can order from a take-out service, however for our blog post, we wanted to explore how to actually make food and we mainly focused on food that would be healthy, easy to make, and affordable. Teresa,Susan, Nicole, and I sought to look for something that would appear to be delicious while still being healthy. The search was easy enough, as cooking websites have specific categories that are healthy and delicious, however money became the main issue. We decided on making something that was healthy, delicious, and affordable. We are trying to show that millennials and students are not bound to just eat ramen, or delivered take-out but that we have the capacity to make food that is healthy and affordable. 

If you like the young lions above, do not believe that food can be both healthy and delicious while not putting a huge whole in your wallet, do not despair, we seek to show you that the impossible is indeed possible. What we are trying to right, are the food choices which often seem easy, but increase chances of obesity, and ignore the nutritional guideline which we must always take into consideration. Although out post will not focus on the people that do not have access to these food items, it will focus on helping those who do have access but have no drive, to help them make better choices. We are assuming a level of privilege in creating this video, one of middle class audience members. Our video is to inspire a choice but not to remedy a lack of choice. We are choosing to do this because we are addressing college level individuals who should generally expect a higher standard of living, where access to healthy  food items will be higher. 

This video shows that it is not just poverty that creates bad food choices, but  that this food is also created to be addictive. It mainly focuses on poverty, and the production of food which is more than the current population size, and the way which the food system is flawed to make people make bad food choices.

Analysis of a Video Essay

As humans in the 21st century, we are constantly one click away from groundbreaking information. We walk around with enough information in our smartphones to put the Library of Alexandria to shame. We are making up new vocabulary every day and we have changed the way we communicate with people on a global scale. But how has all of this affected us?! In this youtube video by ASAP science entitled “5 ways social media is changing your brain right now”, they explain exactly that.   

The layout of this video is pretty straightforward. The main idea is how social media is affecting our brains. They took this idea and broke it down into 5 easy to manage ideas:  

We have become literally addicted it. 

It has affected our ability to multi-task. 

Phantom Vibration Syndrome?!?!?! WHAT?!! 

The release of dopamine caused by social media use. 

How online dating has affected us.  

All of these topics were then broken down further into more informative scientific details. All of which were supplemented with pictures. This helped the view better understand the otherwise misunderstandable scientific details. I particularly like their use of a whiteboard and a little artistic ability to help them get their point across. I’ve seen them do this before of youtube videos from Khan Academy, however, in those videos they used real time video to show step by step instructions. In contract, ASAP Science used a time lapse video of the artist drawing the video, so that it looked more animated and told the story little by little. They were also smart to put a list of sources in their description.

I love the video you chose! One it’s very relatable! I have definitely suffered from Phantom Vibration Syndrome.  I think my phones vibrates all the time and it doesn’t, it drives me nuts.  I also agree with you, the drawings that were supplemented throughout the video to get the different points and information across was great.  I have also see Khan academy using a white board, but not like this.  The little drawings definitely grabbed my attention and kept my wanting to watch.

How To Reach Your Millennial

In trying to decide what kind of videos to look at, I had decided to just search for “instructional videos” in the search bar.  I came across some rather interesting videos…some of which I was surprised were on there.  But I came across these two videos I found to be just fantastic!

Parents today are finding themselves facing a difficult situation in raising their children.  Today’s society is filled with all sorts of distractions, especially those concerning electronic devices which keep all of us from missing out on crucial events in life…such as the proper way to do the simple things in life that many of today’s youth are taking for granted.  This father decided to create these videos in an attempt to get through to his two teenagers about some of these simple things, such as changing the toilet paper, loading the dishwasher, and hanging up a wet towel.  

In these videos, the man explains that face-to-face communication is clearly not working, so he decided to try out a different medium to get through to them.  Apparently, he believed that within this age of social media and technology, the one way that would be hugely successful in getting through to his kids about these rather serious issues was through YouTube.  So, he made a set of instructional videos to show his kids some quick hacks for daily living in their household.  

All jokes aside…and these videos are hilarious to watch…it’s quite interesting to see that this father felt his pleas to reach out and teach his millennial children were falling upon such deaf ears in person that he felt compelled to create these videos.  On the surface, they seem like regular cellphone YouTube instructional videos, but the deeper resonance of these videos lies within the fact that many people today are so focused on their electronic devices and social media that they fail to experience what’s happening just around them.  The manner in which he films these videos, very serious and calm (as though he is desperately trying to go out of his way to accommodate them), is classic.  I’m sure he felt the need to burst into laughter afterwards, but this IS actually an interesting way to have to reach your kids these days since they are mostly consumed by social media.  Thoughts?

I absolutely love the videos you chose.  In a way they seem a tad bit sarcastic but they show a much large scale problem.  As you said this dad is having a hard time communicating with his children so he is reaching out to them by using social media in order for them to get through and do every day lives.  It is beyond interesting to see that a father would actually have to use social media to talk to his children that he sees everyday.  And the worst part is that the tasks he is asking them to do are very simple.  I can totally relate because as a Resident Assistant I came across the issue that resident aren’t flushing the toilets or picking up their hair or leaving their sanitary pads in places other than the garbage.  It is crazy how our generation doesn’t try to do simple things anymore and completely slack off on the simplest of tasks.

Informational Videos

Although my first video has a fun purpose it still shows how to do something and the individual takes the time to explain step by step on to create this costume in a tutorial.  I came across this video while figuring out what I wanted to do for Halloween.  I decided to be on of the creepy nurses from the movie “Silent Hill,” however, I didn’t know how exactly to execute this because of how intricate the costume design was.  The individual in the video went into great detail step by step on how to create the costume, staring from the few beginning to the ending steps.  The best part of it all is that because it is a video  we get to actually see the costume come to life. 

The next video was actually made by VPVA (Violence Prevent and Victim Assistance) here at Rutgers University.   This video has some very important people from the Rutgers community and also students just like us who play their own roles at Rutgers.  The point of this video is not only to educate individuals on sexual assault and spread awareness on how it has become a major issue on college campuses, but it also gets across the message that Rutgers is going to play its role as a community to try and end sexual violence.  I think this video is beautifully done but also gets across an amazing message.

Music and Fashion has shown to be one of the most power things that can define a culture and a particular period in time. For us, we decided to focus on music and fashion during the period of 80s and 90s. We wanted to make it more specific to millennials who were born in the timeline that characterizes millennials of the 80s and 90s and how growing up in those periods helped influence the way that they use music and fashion and integrate the two together. We also slightly dived into the idea of social causes and social justice and how that somehow influenced or was influenced by music and fashion in the 80s and 90s all the way to now. .Lastly, for our interview, we were able to take a slightly different direction by trying to understand the way millennials from other countries understood music and fashion in their culture and also in the context of American culture. This puts things into perspective as to how music and fashion not just of the 80s and 90s but in general can impact people culturally and beyond.

I really like your topic of music and fashion. And one thing i agree is that the choice of millennials towards music and fashion shows their characteristic of open-minded. And everyone can has his or her own opinion about fashion in today’s society, which makes millennials unique and independent. Also, it is worth mention that there may be a connection between fashion and music. And you guys raise examples of musical artists’ fashion styles such as Michael Jackson style in the 80s and 90s. For now, millennials definitely follow their own beats when it comes to fashion. And i think If fashion retailers want love from millennials, they’ll need to accept that it’s not about their logo; it’s all about consumers’ personal style.

I completely agree with what you two are saying.  The millennial generation is definitely way more open-minded to music and fashion during the 80s and 90s.  A lot of individuals that I know aren’t stuck with just listening to one category of music, they listen from things that are from rap to country.  I think that people now a days, as you said are so focused on what everyone one else thinks.  With what you wear, do, and listen to everyone is always so focused on fitting in with the “in crowd.”  And when someone stands out from other people they get those looks of judgement and not being accepted by others.  I think technology has a lot to do with this.  What’s popular on social media is what is popular in society. And using my podcast for an example, social media really dictates the way people feel about themselves.  They search for that acceptance and without it they don’t feel okay.  I agree with you though, I’m not the type of person who follows the “trends” or “fads” that go on today.  Like just because Khloe Kardasian is waist training to get a smaller waste because thats whats accepted in fashion, doesn’t mean I’m going to do this. As Millennials who are all about to start entering the real world work force (it’s a scary thought, isn’t it?), it’s only natural that we should be looking into the availability of jobs, their longevity, and their prospect towards our planned futures. Likewise, as college students, we are expected to be making choices that will lead us where we want to go. It’s a pretty obvious plan, but is it something that is feasible for us to do? Are we even going to be able to use our college degrees in the work force? In our Podcast, Generation Jobless, we give our personal stories about how we are trying to prepare ourselves for the potentially daunting work lives we are going to lead, and insight to how we feel that it might be to pursue any job once we leave school. Featuring some valuable narratives from Peter, who gave us a bit of pointers and evidence that getting a job after college might not be the scariest notion in the world.

Hey guys… really enjoyed listening to this podcast since it is so relevant to our current lives today regarding college and the job market. One of most talked about things between as a college student, in fact questions we ask ourselves is whether our major would give us the job we are so passionate about? To be honest, I feel that any degree or major we pursue is a basis/foundation of knowledge any the field we want to go into. However, is this bound to give us the career we want? I don’t think so. I have met many people in the past who were a major and landed a job in a different field. THIS IS COMMON! In reality U.S job markets will never revolve around our interests and needs, but instead we have to revolve around pursuing something that our current society is asking for. This fact can be a burden to a lot of those who want to pursue their dreams in a field that is not needed. However, I feel that people shouldn’t conform to what society is asking for. If you like a certain field whether that is art, music, business, science, political science, etc… pursue it! This is your life, so why would you be miserable in a field that does not interest you? I hear that many people are studying a field because it pays well… like what?! Pursue your passion, what drives you, what gives you energy! Have a dream and pursue something your passionate about. Haha, but anyways great set up, topic, conversation, and overall podcast!

Hey guys, awesome podcast! I love the way you went about it!! Everything you all talk about is so relevant to our present day lives.  Internships, trade schools, college, everything! I agree completely, college is a piece of work in its own that we all have to work our butts off to finish! And no matter what we are forced to have that mindset that a college degree really matters within the “real world” and if you tried to take another route you’re looked down upon.  Most of our colleges degrees might not even be relevant to the job that we have outside of college in the end.  Plus isn’t most jobs about who you know anyway? You all are totally right when it comes to talking about how internships are a main outlet for getting jobs out of college, or even knowing family friends.  I know someone who went to college for something in the business school, he graduated and because his family owned a entertainment company he is now an MC, dancer, and DJ.  His business degree helps with none of that obviously, but he still went through all that schooling to end up doing something completely different.  The way society works now a days is just by putting pressure on everyone to get that $100,000 piece of paper, claiming that it will make everything easy for when you get out of school and you will for sure get a job.  Now none of that means anything, that pressure makes a lot of people waste money at college to get that piece of paper and then they end up not even getting a job.  Thank you all for discussing the issue and making it so relatable for all of us!

The Millennial generation is known as the generation of technology.  Since birth we have all grown up with various sources of technology at our fingertips.  We have been around for the birth of social media and it has now become any everyday part of our lives. Social media comes in many forms, from text posts and blogs, to images, and videos.  We focused specifically on the social media outlets of tumblr, instagram, and snapchat. We found that individuals use these social media outlets a lot, specifically to share things about their everyday lives. Here we interview individuals and give our input on how social media effects the way individuals actually view themselves.

The Millennial Generation Podcast

Media narrative portrays that the Millennial Generation as choosing not to work and would rather choose not to work than to have a job or career that they do not like.  Large part of Millennial Generation is not working and choosing not to get jobs.  Parents did such a “great job” raising them and doing what they had to do so their children are able to “kick back and not do anything.” Even if all of this is false, the media still portrays this and everyone chooses to believe this.  Less labor is needed in the working word because machines are now doing the jobs that people used to do in past generations. There are permanently higher unemployment rate because the machines are taking over jobs. The people who are on unemployment and food stamps are now being viewed as “parasites.” People are reaping the benefits of this new world and others are becoming very angry over this. People in 1913 had to farm to get food otherwise they would die, however in 2013 people aren’t forced to do this, they now work at jobs where they are forced to just hand people coffee that the machines make. There is not as much as a motivating factor as there once was. People now view the younger society as lazy because they chose to reap the benefits that have been made for them.  The older generations are having a problems with the world they have creative, because people are not doing what they used to do and putting in the same efforts, the older generation doesn’t know how to take it. Millennials are the generation born between 1978 and 2000. They make up most of the employed and will continue to make up this position.  “They are the I want it all and I want it now generation.”  They also are the generation that has helicopter parents. Millennial approach the work force differently through the work force. Things that would help the Millennial generation in the working field would feedback.  They are eager for feedback. A mentoring program would help the Millennial generation and will lead them to do a better job because they are able to share their feelings, they are used to being heard. Have a robust training program, they are used to structure.  Everyday after school filled with activities, keeping them busy is helpful. Sink or swim method does not work. Used to technology and social networking, might help you use these areas more effectively in the job. They are used to working in groups. They take their personally lives very seriously and would benefit from working at home and possibly working less hours if possibly. They like time off and vacation time. Mentoring Training and flexibility. In a way it seems like the Millennial generation needs to be spoon fed.  They have certain needs that have to be met in order for them to do a better job in the working field. Over all the Millennial generation is being portrayed as lazy.  They do not work as much as previous generations and it seems like when they d they want to be pampered.  They have certain needs that need to be met in the working field, including vacation time or less work.  This angers the previous generations and makes them not look at the Millennial generation as a valuable generation.
