A Lesson in Water Felting~
With winter comes a noticeable drop in temperature. Break out the wool hats, everyone! Or, in this case, felt your own! We take the changing seasons very seriously and embarked on our first water felting endeavor. This is how we did! Total time: 4 hours Difficulty: 8 out of 10
First, take loose roving wool between 19μ and 21μ. We used 21μ merino wool. Cut out a cardboard circle after carefully measuring the circumference of your head. Make your circle at least 6" wider than the measurement you come up with. It shrinks during the felting process by about 20%!
Once you piece your wool onto the cardboard, take a piece of tulle and lay it on top. Flip it over and do the same to the other side. Once you have your desired weight, felt away! Scrub the wool with a piece of tulle on top using a warm soap and water mixture until you're happy with the way it looks. Then, using a bamboo mat, roll your hat back and forth at least 10 times in each direction. Flip it over and repeat these steps. Keep felting and rolling your hat for at least 5 more rounds, or until you're happy with it. Cut out another cardboard circle with a diameter of 5-6". Place it in the center of your hat and very carefully, using an exacto knife, cut around it to make the hole for your head! Scrub the opening and inside of your hat gently, and roll it a few more times.
Once you've finished rolling and felting, soak your hat in a vinegar and hot water mixture for 30 minutes. Let it dry, and it'll be ready to wear!
Or, if you want to customize it like we did, take some lace, beads or ribbon and embroider away!
Finish the inside of your hat with petersham ribbon to ensure that the head opening won't stretch with wear, and voilà!
