My exhibition is called Spiritus Immundus, latin for āimpure spiritā. I use this term to describe my mental state and mental illnesses such as depression andanxiety, describing these things as almost like a demon or evil spirit in themselves. The subject matter of my exhibition is about the mental state. By using uncomfortable and paranormal imagery, Iāve created a series of images and a video piece called silence. Iāve used imagery from my home and sites of memory to create narratives that hint towards the mental state and anxieties. The fears Iāve explored in these works consists from life after death, abuse, mental anguish, and many other uncomfortable subjects. For these works Iāveused my own images and videos along with online historical art images asreferences to the supernatural. By using supernatural and occult motifs, I wanted to relate those fears to very real ones we may have experienced. By using tools like photoshop, Iāve layered and edited multiple images to create five images titled memory, stuck, haunted, remnants, and manifestations. For my video piece, silence, Iāve used myself as a prop to relate the aftermath of abuse to the subject of witchcraft and the witch trials. This idea revolves around the feelings and misconceptions of abuse, and relating this to the fear and misogyny inflicted upon the victims of the witch trials, which began in the 1600ās. Iāve used the motif of bandages, something that is usually associated with healing, as something thatās silencing someone, the actions of others taking something from them, and making their words and emotions appear invalid. Iāve accompanied it with sound, whispers and bells to give the feeling of weight and discomfort. I hope to challenge these emotions and mentalities through this work, and to also create a feeling of discomfort and anxiety.
