you are a summer boy

you have and always will be

that’s when you thrive and live your best life

i knew the real you for that shining summer

i’m so glad i got to know the real you

because even after all the hurt you’ve caused

i know your element

and i know you can be the happiest boy in the world

thank you for showing me that piece of you

and letting me endlessly love that piece of your heart

it will always now be a piece of mine

even after learning to unlove you

i still find myself wishing for us

deep into the night

i think of our names together

how it would look inked onto papers

our christmas cards and new years invitations

i wonder how i’d change my signature

to snugly fit in your last name

i still wonder how we’d decorate our first apartment

the one you wanted right out of school

maybe the names of the dogs you wanted so

and where we would let them sleep at night

when i allow myself break from the busy lives we lead

i wonder what we could've continued to be

i light a candle

that smells of the lilac tree

he remains in the smoke above

the scent reminding me

of his dearest mother

they’re still in there

deep within the ashes

his sister’s smile in the melted white wax

they remain in my mundane days
