Watching all of these love stories of queer men gain traction and become classics and so beloved by fans is so heartwarming on one side, and yet so heartbreaking when I wonder if the general public (and straight women) would act so welcoming and excited over a sapphic show (as if they don’t all get cancelled and erased like a month after release)…

I don’t know if there is a world in which I liked men, I don’t think there is, but I believe there is a world where I grew up in acceptance and inclusion, where I never forced myself to be someone I am not, in which I never even considered men, because the truth is, they never compared.

I do love the whole Legally Blonde movie movement, pushing the Barbiesque idea that a pink hyperfeminine woman can be and like whatever her heart desires, no matter what she looks like; but it’s so funny to me how the extent of diversity in girl-targeted cartoons is “everyone has different interests and personalities but they still all wear skirts and/or heels”. As if tomboys and masculine presenting girls shouldn’t also be able to see themselves on screen and are even in more need of representation and acceptance. Like yes, it’s great that she plays football and is still girly, I guess, but what about the other 3 out of 5 young football players who would love to see a character embrace their masculinity on screen as a little girl? Showcasing the versatility of feminine prsentation is only revolutionary until it takes up the space of other underrepresented groups in bigger need of normalization.

It’s funny how the so called allies militating for sapphic representation in media completely switch up the moment someone doesn’t fully fit their tokenized stereotypes of lesbians, cis normative expectations of self-expression or sexual fantasies.
