                              (  something about her attitude immediately sets him on edge.  definitely not fear - nobody being confident in themselves offends nor discomforts him - but some element of wariness that settles into his bones like lead.  if she can throw something at him without warning, what else will she put him through?  he’s already thinking the worst…

                              her words prompt a twitch of his brow before his face changes.  features slacken.  if he wants this to work for him, he’s going to have to push himself to make the best of the worst.  he himself assumes his usual cheek-in-palm position on the bar top, a brow peaking slightly as he glances at her.  )

                              (  and yet, despite his casual warning, the corners of his mouth twitch tiredly upwards.  a glance towards the assortment of alcohol behind him. )

     “Yeah, yeah,” a dismissive wave of her hand to a message duly noted. Her interest was centered on the wall of booze just above sight, her eyes flicker there for a moment before they return his gaze.  “Is that even a question?”

      Cat wasn’t an alcoholic, though the sheer amount of nights ( sometimes even full days ) she frequented the bar may have suggested otherwise. She was primarily solitary in her drinking, only socializing with other patrons when they posed the opportunity --she never sought out the company herself. The only ritual that she could only keep true to was her compulsion to poke and prod at the bartender. Tonight was no exception.

     “Whiskey. Neat. --And a nice big smile, hm?”
