Disneyland’s 60th Celebration Details
Last night DIsney announced some big details of DIsneyland’s 60th anniversary celebration. The Diamond Celebration officially starts on May 22nd which is when all the following events will begin. From new decorations, parades, fireworks and shows there will be no shortage of new things to do at Disneyland this year.
Diamond Decor
With the 60th being the Diamond Celebration, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle as well as Carthay Circle Theatre will both be adorned with diamonds. The spires of the castle will be flittering and each icon will have its own diamond medallion featuring the letter “D”. So far most everyone seems pleased with the design of the castle, including myself. Historically, castle makeovers never seem to go over all that well. Blue banners will pop up all over the resort to honor the celebration and you can bet your bottom dollar that there will be exclusive merchandise for the event.
New World of Color Show
Lets jump over to California Adventure before we get back to Disneyland. The new World of Color show will be called “World of Color – Celebrate! The Wonderful World of Walt Disney” or just “World of Color Celebrate!” for short. I might have shortchanged this new show in the first sentence but I’m just as excited for this as I am any of the other new offerings.
The new show will be the story of Disneyland and Walt Disney told by Mickey Mouse. The story will be “both epic and intimate in scope” told with animated imagery, live-action footage, fountains, lasers, special effects and a new score. Walt’s “It was all started by a mouse” quote at the end of Celebrate the Magic always chokes me up so I’m sure I’ll be bawling by the end of this.
Paint the Night Parade
Disneyland is getting a version of Hong Kong Disneyland’s Paint the Night parade. As the name implies, it’s a nighttime parade. Think Main Street Electrical Parade on performance enhancing drugs.
The parade will feature over 1.5 million lights covering floats featuring Monsters, Inc., Cars, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, Frozen and more. If you’ve seen Hong Kong’s Paint the Night you’d know that this is an incredible parade. I haven’t seen anything to the effect of Hong Kong giving this parade to Disneyland as a “gift”. So if these floats are built just for Disneyland, I’d expect this parade to continue for a years after the 60th celebration is over.
Disneyland Forever Fireworks
Jaw-dropping is the best word I can use to describe this. Disney’s initiative to turn any semi-flat surface into a stage for projection mapping shows is really paying off. At the Magic Kingdom, Celebrate the Magic is one of my favorite things in the park. Disneyland’s castle isn’t large enough to support that kind of show so instead they are using all of Main Street as a canvas. Oh yeah, and on the Matterhorn too.
The projections down Main Street are only part of Disneyland Forever. The entire park is a stage for the show. Thankfully making viewing the show from another locations still viable in the often congested park. If you can’t be on Main Street, fireworks can be seen from each land. As the cherry on top, Disney Legend Richard Sherman has written a new song for the show titled “Kiss Goodnight.” I can’t think of anything better to be a part of.
That is all for yesterday’s announcements but there will be more details of Disneyland’s 60th coming out of the next few months. There are still the lingering rumor of huge refurbishments to classic dark rides. Alice in Wonderland recently received some sprucing up and the rest of the bunch is expect to receive the same. Check back to Park Beast for the latest.
